Today we finish our collaboration series with Weld.com and Bob Moffatt with some restricted boiler tubing. Bob shows us a TIG torch kit that was pretty cool and we get down on a root pass on our mock up! Who will we collaborate with next? Someone got any suggestions? Lets link up!

Most of the time we use mini rigs which is the 9 series rigs. That set up there is wide open compared to a lot of welds boilermakers make.

Great video and thansk for sharing guys! I am a boilermaker and was just on a mirror welding job, welding one inch tubes with very little space. We used number 9 torch with a gas lens and stubby #7 cup with a button back cap. It was perfect. We had the extra slammed tiny gas lens and cup for the #24 torches but they would burn out in minutes. If it was really tight you would just angle your torch accordingly.

Hey guys first off,I love you guys! But...you gave yourselves too much room, sometimes you can spread tubes but most of the time you don't have that luxury. To simulate what you guys are doing there should 3/8 to no more than a half inch between those tubes. That's the simulator test you will get on most jobs. When welding the tangent that tight is when your buddy feeding your wire comes in to play. Message me and I'll be more than happy to give specs on the simulator jig. Once again,I love you guys and your videos. I would weld with you two guys any day! And a 9 series torch is what you need.

Garrett Cobb you are correct water wall tube has 1/2' space between tubes and those are gravy, tangent are jammed tight and are a little more challenging but after awhile you get the hang of it and and it's no big deal to to weld them either.retired union boilermaker

Yeah I agree Garett however that's on a outage, when boilers come down and the ISO needs the unit back asap, we have to do a repair from one side which doesn't allow a tig repair on tangents. We have tangents with no spacing in between. Tubes are butted together. But yeah in the field it's a lot less comfortable and way tighter areas. God damn engineers....lol....anyways appreciate the great videos always. Weld on brother

Half inch apart is wide for water walls. If you can get the whole rig between the tubes it’s way too wide and not at all realistic. Hook up a mini rig pull that tungsten way out, burn the bevel off and feed the wire on the inside of the tube. And if you really wanna make it hard make em like tangent tubes, which are basically touching. From a boilermaker standpoint this set up doesn’t qualify as “restricted access”.

And u can pull out the END of the torch for longer reach. In narrow places. I have used a air cooled one on a lot of aluminium on 250amp And i have still not broke IT.

I just stumbled upon this vid and I know that the kid is already gone and I haven't seen any vids with Bob in awhile, but this isn't really realistic. In reality, more than likely, there's going to be a lot less space in between the tubes. I'm assuming that these are representative of water wall tubes. More than likely a person would be welding these with a partner and the space in between the tubes one guy would run the rig while the guy on the other side would feed the wire and tell the guy running the rig up, down, forward or back, etc. It's a nice vid and all but just not a good representation of what would actually happen on the job site. Keep up the good work.
