My timing belt broke on my 2006 eclipse and I just finished putting a new one on to see if the valves are messed up, The car is running perfectly. No knocks, nothing leaking no smoke from the exhaust. I must be super lucky I guess.

Just spent 9 hours doing a timing service on a b5 1.8t on Sunday. Ahh piece of mind now. The pulley on the tensioner was destroying itself cause wear on the edge of the belt and a squeaky noise after only 64k miles. Not a engine to skip a timing service on.

Timing belts are the dumbest design ever it needs to be a steel chain so it never wears out or just stick with pushrods

well anything can break i mean you could throw a rod. but chains are much less likely to break most chained cars go the whole life of the car with the same chain, but that can not be said for belts as age even without miles is very hard on rubber

Rusty Shackleford True...unless you have one of Ford's infamous 4.0 v6 sohc engines. They have not one, not two, but FOUR frickin timing chains!!! And they all have their own guides and tensioners! And to top it off, the guides are made of cheap wax plastic. This engine is extremely suseptable to timing failures if you don't change the oil often. The timing failures can range anywhere from 45k miles to 200k. The guy who designed this piece of shit should be flogged.

I am not gonna take the engine apart to figure out if the cylinders or valves are toast or have somebody else do it and charge me hundreds of doallars to fix it. In my case my belt broke on the road and it is an interference engine in my accord. I know how to change that which is not super easy but I can do it with minimal tools and the belt itself is like 25 bucks. The belt change worked and all is good. It's been like two weeks driving with no issues.

If a vehicle has a turbocharger, thats a separate issue on whether its an interference or non interference engine. The turbocharger is altogether a separate mechanism.

It's a good thing my mechanic keeps track of my car and we changed out my water pump and timing belt at the same time prior to the first sixty thousand miles for safety reasons. I know exactly when it needs to be routinely serviced so I can avoid a mess down the road. But I'm curious, can the timing belt break before it's scheduled maintenance?

Oz Mechanics Thanks for the feedback. I have a 2005 Hyundai Tucson who's record is clean of major repairs. I hope I'm doing the right thing by practicing early preventive maintenance on my vehicle. SUV tires are expensive enough so I'm hoping to prevent costly repairs.

Yeah, but not only age of components is the one thing to consider. For example i had a brand new Continental timing belt replaced and it just snap after 3000 kilometers... My last was like 60 000 km and 2 and a half years old and was doing just fine, but to be safe i put a new one and now my car is at the mechanic :(

Belt broke 237k Hyundai sante fe 6cld Not spending $600 for a change with a water pump to find out my valves are bent on a interference engine. The fact that my mechanic for over 20 years didn't inform me of the interference issue makes him null and void. Peace

This is why timing belts only belong on engines that come with their own pit crew... or else are free spin designs. Gears or chains on an interference engine ftw!
@anonymike8280
@anonymike8280 2 жыл бұрын
Depends on the engine, but generally if the job is done properly, you will not have problems. I'm watching this video because I have a problem resulting from bad work done when the previous owner had the vehicle. Fortunately, it's a non-interference engine. Someone made a mess of it by not tightening bolts to the their proper torques. Leaky water pump gasket. (undertorque). Broken bolt on the idler pulley (either over or under, I'll never know which). Crankshaft bolt probably overtorqued. It's a mess. I knew the water pump was leaking a little. If I'd gone into it sooner, maybe I would have retorqued the idler and tensioner and I wouldn't be off the road right now.
