Thanks Professor! I've learned more about transmission from your videos than everywhere else, combined. Not just Landy Transmissions

Mike, my '98 300 Tdi had a "crunch" into second from the day I bought it with only 77,000 klms on it, never deteriorated nor improved greatly to the day I moved it on ten years later with around 300K. I put it down to the fact that when I bought it it had the wrong viscosity oil in it, (way too heavy), I thought the damage may have been done then, it marginally felt better after drain/flush and refill with the right weight oil but yes, you may be onto something. Watch this space indeed.

Damn! It's the forks! Mike, you are amazing!

It has to be - I have in the past changed the 2nd gear, synchro hub and ring as an assembly, and it is still the same

When I build up my lt76 I'm definitely going to check the selector forks Mike

It seems to be the R380 that has the weakness

Hmm.. The Ashcroft suffix L in my D1 has a great feel when selecting those gears. but it has only done 20,000 miles. The one it replaced was horrible. That selector wear might be it, Mike, but to be fair that box had had some serious abuse.

Very good Video ! I heard from Truck drivers, they are soldering the forks. I don't no the Alloy. One told me CuSi3. Wig welding I do not recommend, before you know the Alloy of the forks. Ask Ashcroft ?

They said they were a bronze of some sort - JP seems to think they are Aluminium bronze - quite hard wearing

Should have had one of my oil coolers

Mike, I thought you had figured out ages ago (months?) in a previous video that the wear on the selector fork pads was the main problem?
@BritannicaRestorations2 ай бұрын
Yes I did, but I have not had a new part to compare

Ashcroft rebuilt the K suffix (early) R380 that has gone into the RR rebuild I showed you. It had the usual crunch on swift changes up to second. I really hope they replaced the forks in addition to all the usual bits. I may be able to find out, if they keep records of build sheets.

I know Ashcroft keeps records of their builds as they re number the transmissions

Hi Mike I've still not pulled my gearbox to sort it. But I've discovered with my 5th to 4th gearchange problem if I push it through to 1/2 a bit then let it recentre it drop straight into 3/4 no problem. It never crunches in any gear. It's just the change down 5 to 3/4 like it's blocked. Any ideas? Thanks in advance Dave

The 3/4 synchro ring sounds as if it is buggered

Sure you put a lot of thought process into your job , I am just wondering if the after marked manufactures put the same amount into their job? Eg you get something that looks great but dont quite fits-
@BritannicaRestorations2 ай бұрын
Problem is if it was not for after market there would not be many Defenders still running - A lot of UK original manufactures no longer make parts for LR, and a lot of genuine LR parts are made in India, Eastern Europe and some in China

I ones, wanted to melt syncrorings, they are maybe the same Material. It was a desaster, by 1380 C⁰ it was becoming liquid, it was steaming out a material, yellow pouder everyvere. Zinc ?

Well fork me, another mystery solved, if only Land Rover had made the center carrier on the synchro longer it might not had rocked so easily ???
