Very happy with this catch! - I managed to film the Retained/on-call crew arriving and running to the NEW Fire Engine before responding on lights and (after I cut the camera) sirens to a High rise domestic alarm call in Exeter city centre from Devon & Somerset Fire and Rescue Service at the central Fire station - Danes Castle.
-Excellent response times by the retained crew, who were leaving the station within 3.5 mins of the call coming in.

No not at present. Co response has been trialled and used previously to a limited number of incidents. Personal opinion is I think it's a great idea as broadens the scope of the service in an era where safety is reducing our traditional demands

theres no laws regarding it. You can use blue lights if you fall under the definition of an "emergency vehicle"
@njd610
@njd610 5 жыл бұрын
No, you can't use blue lights just because you're working for the emergency services. I'm a Paramedic and have argued the case for 10 years. It's too much "insurance and liability" that if something goes wrong, it's not just going to come out of the money pot that the trusts use. You could find yourself out of a job. You need special insurance to drive your own car with blue lights, and to get that insurance, you need permission from the bigwigs in authority. Something that is very rare to get, unless you're an officer. I which case, that personal car you use will have something to do with the trust, such as a lease car. Then it legally becomes an "emergency vehicle". Something that retained fire crews won't ever get as it'll open up a massive can of worms unfortunately.

Dragon999vids - Europe & Worldwide 😳 well that brings up a few different questions. 1. How do they know who is available to ride the rigs on any certain call? How much space is in that thing to carry all the gear for everyone. 2. How does the alarm not sound that the seat belts are not on as they get ready?
@dragonemergencyvideos
@dragonemergencyvideos 5 жыл бұрын
@@lindanwfirefighter4973 For question 1- Only 1 crew are on call at each shift, out of 3 watches for each truck so it's always going to be the same people crewing that engine on this shift. Question 2 - I guess alarm does not go off for the seatbelts, however her seatbelt was on by the time they left got to the main road, they are very fast at putting on their turnout gear

Similar but not quite. They're on call and repsond to the station for calls, but are paid for the calls they do.
@nevillemason6791
@nevillemason6791 4 жыл бұрын
The term 'volunteer' sounds too much like unpaid/undertrained but may be not. Retained (RDS = Retained Duty System) firefighters are paid a varying 'retainer' fee based on the hours they can make themselves available to respond to calls to the station from work or home address. (Must be within 5 minutes response time so about 1 mile radius of the station). Also paid a turn out fee and an hourly rate the same as their full time colleagues, usually a minimum 2 hours per call out. Compulsory training is one evening per week and to the same standard as full time. Most small towns and country areas operate 100% on RDS. Larger towns operate a mixture of full time/RDS. Only London Fire Brigade is 100% full time.
@richardpotter712
@richardpotter712 4 жыл бұрын
No. There is only one volunteer fire station in England and that is Peterborough. RDS firefighters get paid and go through a selection process, just like the full time/wholetime. At Peterborough they do it for nothing, just like the RNLI and the costs for running the station and equipment are paid for by the council via Cambridge Fire and rescue. The station is also a charity. Kingston in Devon is said to be a volunteer fire station but I think they get paid.
@TheShitpostKing
@TheShitpostKing 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks Richard. I've had a look on the Peterborough fire station website and I can't see what hours they commit to, can you shed any light on this? I'd love to be a retained fire fighter but I can't commit 60 hours of being on call per week, especially with the kind of jobs I'll be going for after university. I'm more than willing to move to Peterborough for this! Haha
@richardpotter712
@richardpotter712 4 жыл бұрын
@@TheShitpostKing They operate like the RNLI where there is no basic commitment, you give what cover you can because you don`t get paid. If you move to Peterborough, make sure that your house is within 5 minutes of the fire station. Most RDS in England give up because of the commitment required by the FRS (hours needed to be completed) against the total pay you get. Its very poor pay for the commitment required. Sometimes it better not to get paid.
