There's an article out there Gen Urobuchi wrote on G-Reco, which he was a huge fan of. He argues that G-Reco is a story about stories, or rather societal meta-narratives constructed towards political ends. Things like "immigrants are taking our jobs" or "group X are an inferior race" that can survive purely as a compelling narrative detached from reality. This is - part - of what makes G-Reco so confusing, the motivations stated by the characters and their factions are intentionally not... fact checked. I watched the series again with this in mind, and while I don't know if Urobuchi is "right" or not his argument made sense with what I was seeing. Luin Lee's story about the Kundata is quite plausibly a myth to assert victimhood and justify his completely unrelated violence in the present. The Capital Army's excuse for existing is a distant threat which never really materializes. The Towasanga faction want retribution against the Earth who barely knows they exists, let alone oppresses them. The assumptions and stories behind SU-Cordism tenets are never questioned, it's a religion so that's pretty obvious. The Venus faction wants to reconquer Earth because of an ideology of superiority, a world they now can barely stand up on due to generations of living in low gravity. The Ameria faction invented an energy crisis conspired by the Capital to justify military action against them, it's not a real thing. There are probably more points that I'm forgetting, however the reality of the Reguild Century is that everything is actually pretty... good. The Earth, Towasanga, Venus Globe, the Kundata -- there's nothing really forcing them to fight on a material level. It's the narratives weaved into the minds of the participants which have invented these conflicts as they are portrayed.

G reco is definitely the most Tomino show in all the best and worst ways, and I actually really enjoyed it! I try to see it as less of a character based story, and more of a narrative that vents Tomino's frustrations with irl political leadership and the, at the time, growing call to militarize Japan. It's not a surprise that every faction leader pushing for war feels almost parodical in nature and that they all end up dead throughout the story. Also how the story ends with Tomino (Tomino voiced the old man in the end) literally telling Bellri and the youth to go outside and touch grass instead of chasing glories of the past.
@warmachine58357 ай бұрын
The context of Japan remilitarizing is EXTREMELY important to understanding why the characters in Reco do some absolutely batshit things. It's Tomino commenting on people who don't know the horrors of war and who haven't considered the implications of war. The show is very literally a product of its time.
@majorborngusfluunduch86947 ай бұрын
@@warmachine5835Japan's military build up isnt exactly happening for no reason though. Its a necessary measure to make sure China and it little minion North Korea cant just do as they please, and I assure you, you do not want China doing as it pleases more than they already do. This also alleviates some of the pressure on the US to commit so many assets to the region. Wish NATO took notes from Japan.
@dianiix33057 ай бұрын
@@majorborngusfluunduch8694 Pretty sure you'd make an excellent character in g-reco! A lot of characters in the show also think that if they don't build weapons and prepare first, they will lose, when the world of g-reco is otherwise peaceful. Not saying you are wrong either. The world definitely is not some peaceful anime land and there will always be conflict and disagreements, but that concept has always been a major theme in Tomino's works. G-reco tries to show the absurdity of war posturing and military build up when there is an entire world to explore and enjoy. (It just does a terrible job of getting the message across and making it enjoyable lol)
@majorborngusfluunduch86947 ай бұрын
@@dianiix3305 G-reco's message is one that only works in G-reco's world because as you said its actually more peaceful than its factions realize. The message comes off as utterly naive and foolish when applied to the real world because its far from peaceful. The situation in Japan's immediate surroundings is turbulent. They have a major superpower playing power games in the region and threatening (and building up) to invade a neighbor, Taiwan. China is known to be committing human rights violations on the daily, so again I'll reiterate, you do not want them having their way. Japan needs to be capable of defending itself against this threat without relying too much on the US which also has to be concerned about the stability of Europe and the Middle East. By the way, even in Tomino's UC this messaging is naive. Should the AEUG not have been formed to fight the Titans? Should the Earth Federation not have responded to Char trying to drop asteroids on the Earth? Usually the main characters have to get that childish mindset pulled out of them for the sake of their own survival and the survival of the ones they care about. They learn that they have to fight for the world they want to live in. This may propagate more conflict but that's just how it goes. War is part of human nature. It can't be abolished. There will always be opposing wills on the macro level, and on the micro level you have people just trying to make it to tomorrow. The idea of "guys lets just throw down our guns and hug it out and enjoy the world" is entirely unrealistic and to be frank I never really took that message from previous Tomino Gundams. The reality is that in order to maintain peace, you must prepare for war.

My head canon is that one day, Tomino went to sunrise with plans for the second cour, and idea for the third and fourth cours, and there was an awkward silence in the room, before one of the executive said "Mr Tomino, this only supposed to last 26 episode". To which Tomino replied "That's a shame, for once in this industry, we are early on production, and already began some key scenes for a lot of episodes". So they had to make the first half with what they already had on development, even if it felt some piece were missing at some point.

Considering it wasn't the first and probably not the last time a Gundam series production got cut down for whatever reason (a recent example being G-Witch's ending feeling like it was rushed, I feel like there was definitely more in store but had to end it in 24 eps), I wouldn't be surprised if that was what happened.
@0Defensor07 ай бұрын
I felt the same way, like half of the episodes are missing, starting around the 12th - I think. The reason I noticed this was an earlier Animax movie called Lamb, which run at the pace you would expect from your standard movie for about 30 minutes, at which point they realized that they run out of budget and only have 10 minutes to finish it, including the end credits. G-Reco feels exactly the same way.
@Lanhalt27 ай бұрын
@@OmegaEGGY G-Witch was different, from start it was marketed as a 2 cours as IBO was in its time (25 episodes, more if it works well). IBO had the taste to make a story that could end with first season if you changed the 3 or 4 last episodes. Witch did not. They took their sweet time on side stories, building relationship and school stuff, while failed to build a proper political background. It was clear that spacian had a government with military from the Benerit leader is a former military, but the 3/4 of the series show the benerit group doing what they want without government intervention, as if they didn't matter, then they pop out of nowhere at the end, and are a power that matters, which was never shown earlier. Earth is supposed to be in bad state, we never knew why, then suddenly ther are prosperous cities in the later part. When the series approached its end, they had to rush things to do that worldbuilding that should have been in the first cour. I find the "it's rushed at the end" critique slightly off. The element that lead to that rushed ending was there from early, and some of the viewers pointed it many times during cour 1. The show did an awful world at worldbuilding. The balance of power doesn't matter for 3/4 of the show, so it's barely exposed, but when it suddenly matters at the end if feels like things are rushed, because it's element we never got (and mean, it's gundam show, we all knew it would matter at the end). I often says that the 3 first minutes of 00 makes a better job at depicting the settings of the show that the whole Witch show. My point is, Witch was not cut short. it was always marketed as a 2 cours, and just wasn't renewed as IBO was. From the first reveal to the end of the show, there was no official declaration that indicated a third cour. The rushed ending of WfM is on the team, that could not use it's time well enough to pace its story well in 24 episodes. They did some things very well, but miserably failed in other areas.

I must be one of the few people who actually likes Reco in G. Partly because it reminds me so much of King Gainer. And much like that show, the story feels like it was written to be twice the length of the show. It's sad that this Gundam is such a mess, the visuals are stellar and it has this strange "heart" to it. Like it feels like the ending, "G no Senkou", was written before the show was made and Tomino just wrote an entire world around it. there's this weird whimsy to everything and while much of it is really convenient and the good guys always win there's this almost "life" like feel of "dealing with challenges as it comes to you". It's just a very weird show, as if it was meant to be Tomino's "Legend of the Galactic Heroes" but fell completely short of being it.

Gundam Reconguista in G is one of my favorite gundam animes. I like the characters, designs, story. But I also completely agree with all of the points you made. Still It's one of my favorites, because I personally think it's the most unique of all gundams, although it being so confusing might help it stand out. Plus I'm not too critical of anything I watch unless I absolutely hate it. Which is almost non existent. It's a fun watch for sure, even if you are confused but as long as you like the designs/characters and fights, you will have a good time. Bellri is a very interesting protagonist to me, I agree that he seems almost invincible at times. But I still feel like he was a good pilot as we've seen that just because you have a gundam, doesn't mean you can't be beaten. He did hold his own against multiple talented pilot's and even those two mobile armors that had insane attacks. A beam tree that almost branches out infinitely and one that attacks with centipedes. Both attacks being almost impossible to avoid for regular pilots. And If I remember correctly more hints are shown in other media that kind of points to him being a newtype. But I don't want to mention specifically what as that's spoilers. I haven't watched the movies yet, just some clips on youtube. But they seem to maybe fix some plot holes and graphicly update the entire show. Along with a just slightly different ending, I would say it more just makes certain things happier? Don't want to mention specifically what I mean again, But I wish I could. But I won't. I forgot that the doctor lady was like 3 or 4 feet tall. I guess I was more blindsided by the macular female doing pull ups in her mobile suit (so cool) and the female captain of one ship whos in a romantic relationship with one of her own men whos like I think 5 years older then her. Although I might be lowballing that. And after watching him die, just sends herself and her crew knowingly into there deaths. Not that I really mind either of these characters, I was just blindsided by them. There were some interesting names in this series. Rockpie being one of them. I did hate that Bellri's friend becomes absorbed with revenge. I wish he accepted and moved forward with his life. But that's just how it goes sometimes, I still like him even though as you said. He is a huge jerk. I feel like Bellri could have his 50th birthday party and Luin would show up, start going ham on the cake, laugh then leave. He really needs to put all that stuff that happened before he was born behind him. He's got a lover, no need to bring that into his future home. Is he going to instill in his child the dream to get revenge on Bellri's kid as well and continue the grudge? In this scenario anyways. I couldn't believe the leader of that group that tried to take over the crescent moon ship, pretty much got himself killed. At least he took responsibly for his actions and plugged the hole. I still wish he could've lived for his future child. (they mention his lover who was also a part of the group is pregnant with his kid) Seems like a horrible move to put you're wife on the front lines, but I guess he didn't always look to far ahead when doing stuff. All in all, I do really enjoy this specific gundam show and I was happy to listen to you're review of it. Now when I finish Gundam wing, I shall go watch that review as well.

Huh, is that how it went? I remember watching it and I'd have sworn up and down that I didn't finish it except I've definitely seen that bit where the ultimate antagonist is just accidentally punted off a cliff. I wish this had a better plot, as you said everything else about the show is amazing.

I always felt like an outlier because I love G-Reco and hate IBO. I feel like the episode structure for IBO is bad, but I understand that G-Reco races like a cheetah.

For me, I enjoyed G-Reco despite its flaws, although I did watch the much improved movie version instead of the TV version. It was also really beautiful, especially with the movie version. IBO on the other hand was just okay to me, I liked what I watched but not much more than that.

As someone who loves G-Reco a lot, I can at least say you did a job well done at getting down the main events of the plot and factions down. But honestly, almost all the times where you concluded "and this is what makes it bad" I just disagreed with. Especially on the complexity of the setting or the self-serving nature of each faction, I felt those were great elements in the show. And especially disagreed on just writing off the cast as one note. To be honest, sitting through 50 minutes of someone trashing a show I like was honestly just a bit disappointing. Oh well.

I genuinely believe G-Reco is a straightforward story once you realize all of the armies aren’t really the focal point of the show. The message of the show is to see things for yourself. After realizing none of the armies really care about each other’s causes and only want what’s good for them, Aida decides to lead the megafauna to travel to Towasanga and Venus Globe to find out the truths of the world. By the end of the show the warmongers are gone and the Megafauna is a ship that recruited people from every major part of the Regild Century. Tomino’s recurring theme of understanding is at it’s best in this show and it’s why it’s my favorite show of his. The various armies are full of morons waging pointless wars that lead to nothing with dangerous weapons they barely know the full extent of. They are a part of G-reco because they show the contrast between 4 divided factions vs 1 united faction (the Megafauna). To make the show as simple as possible, Reconguista in G is about space hippies going on a road trip around the world in an effort to understand it, picking up various people from different cultures as they travel.
@danielramsey61415 ай бұрын
I honestly Doubt Tomino has any idea what “True Understanding” looks like. He preaches it, but never in the original UC Timeline, nor in his “Char’s Counterattack” movie was Understanding ever used. Sure, some grasp of a Character’s Motivations and the Conflict between the goals is brought up! But he often Flops or Flounders whenever he has the chance to get the characters to sit down and actually talk! He always has to throw some wrench, Create unnecessary Drama, or completely have characters misread a situation and then cause unnecessary Death upon another character! There are too many instances of this in most of his projects.

I watched the movies and enjoyed them, but damn I wish they gave the viewer time to breathe, I had to pause each movie multiple times to catch my breath. I wish it was split into 50 episodes... I've heard that Tomino said he felt he couldn't do a 50 episode series anymore (he WAS turning 73 when this aired), so it seems like he crammed 50 episodes into 26 while cutting out very little. Actually, Brain Powerd and Overman King Gainer have similar reputations and also only have 26 episodes. Perhaps Tomino is too ambitious for a 26 episode series and needs 50 for his series to be comprehendable. Still gonna watch everything he directed at some point, definitely check out Zambot 3. I remember one line about some sort of energy ring in space, and I wonder if that was referring to the ring around the Earth at the end of Char's Counterattack. If you think G-Reco is confusing, check out Ring of Gundam, also by Tomino. It's your least favourite Gundam show SO FAR. Build Divers might take that spot.

This right here is why I really appreciate what you do on this channel.i hadn't watched this series yet because I hate the design of the MS all of them the best looking suits are still ehhhh at best.I was hoping the story would be able to distract from the eye sore that is the G- self but nope.Still not as bad as Gundam age though I loathe that stain on the franchise , but I digress thank you from one grateful mecha fan.

For me Reoconguista in G is a mixed bag(the series anyway) the production values and music are top notch and the story elements presented are legit interesting but its pacing is it's biggest flaw, I think this was a series meant to be a full series rather than 26 episodes because it seams Tomino was given a short time frame to get all of the story threads out. Its simular to gundam F91 for me, I really like what it brings to the table but just didn't have the time and space it needed of what it could have been. That being said the mobile suit designs are really great, the g self in particular is a really great unique take on a gundam, I would love to see that one get a master grade.

Hadn't thought of it until you mentioned it, but I'm wondering if the Kuntala were perhaps inspired by or a reference to H.G. Wells' The Time Machine, where it is implied that the Eloi, who spend all day lounging about eating fruits, are perhaps in turn eaten by the Morlocks, who live underground and have an entire technologically advanced society underground. Both races are thought to be descendants of far future humans, evolving in different ways. Kinda surprised you hadn't mentioned that Tomino claims (I believe in an interview) that G-Reco takes place after Turn A in the timeline, despite numerous contradictions with hard dates on the timeline for both series (such as Reglid being 1000 years post-UC while Turn A takes place in CC 2345) as well as the worldbuilding. The more I reflect on his shows and writing the more I determine that Tomino is wrong about them lol

I buy the full series like I did with black Lagoon and other Anime piller Programs but I am finding a big Issue. Trying the DVD's or Blue ray is not an easy task when you wish to get all the programs in the right order. I have no need to spend more then is needed. I just need some help to get the right items for what I can spend. Thanks Drew.
