Subic Bay Naval Base, and Clark Air Force Base, not far away in near Angeles City, were the 2 largest overseas bases of the US. I think in that geographic area, they are less susceptible to the brunt of most typhoons (though no where is completely safe)...Both former bases I think have been repurposed for civilian benefit

Thank you for this Video! When I was a kid, my father was stationed at Subic Bay and we lived on Base for more than two years. It has changed a lot and modernized over the last 50 years :D. When I visit the Philippines, that is one place I will travel to! I remember going across the bridge to Olongapo and seeing the open air fish market. Nothing quite like that smell i remember :). Also using Google maps, I've used the street view version to visit my old neighborhood (base housing) in Binictican. I'm curious as to how much housing is on the ex-base. Subic is now a Freeport Economic Zone.

We try to spend several days a week in Subic and Olongapo as Mrs. Rick's hometown is just 20 miles and a short bus ride north along the coast. This is a pretty good overview, but I do think the monthly costs are a little light. I would not feel comfortable with anything less than $2,000 a month available, and perhaps a little more. Not saying that you are going to spend it all each month, but having that pad may be important at times. BTW, Texas Joe's BBQ in the SBMA is a great restaurant. A bit pricy for Filipino standards, but if you want good American-style food it is one of the best. The expat community is substantial, but heavily dominated by older retired or former military, mostly Navy and Marines who were stationed there decades ago. When you drive through the former titty bar area of Barretto Street you'll see dozens of them tottering around, attempting to relive the good times they had as young man. This is why I always try to walk hand-in-hand with Mrs. Rick as we go around Subic. Me being with a silver haired, grandma-type Filipina takes away from that idea that I am there just on a sex-prowl. 😍

Filipinos are very good at imitation, and hence, you find very good cover bands there: check out Miss Suklay, Karina Velarde. In general, you can live almost anywhere for under $1,500 in the Phils, but if you are willing to "go native," you can live OK on $400/mo. Also, Olongapo is pronounced a-long-a-poe.

I passed through Subic Bay and Clark Air Force Base many times during my Marine Corps career, and have had a soft spot for the Philippines ever since. One of these days before I'm too old I'm going to make a decision and figure out where final retirement will be. I'm in Southwest Florida now waiting for the world to return to somewhat normal. @Johnny Testicles nope, Angeles City may have a not so good background because it was known before for its red light districts but not anymore. Angeles City is such a nice place for expats and like I've said there's a thriving Korean community there as well. It's near the Clark International Airport, Clark Freeport Zone, New Clark City (which would be the new capital city of the Philippines) Angeles City today has skyscrapers and there are some huge development projects like Rockwell Center Nepo.

Between 2015-2018 I spent most of time in the Philippines and a lot of it was around Subic Bay. Subic Bay is one of the top wreck diving destinations in the Philippines. One of the better and more reasonable hotels I found was Coffee Shop in Barangay Barretto. The front desk is on the second floor above the Coffee Shop restaurant. The last time I was there was 2019 before the pandemic. At that time it was 1200 pesos a night. You can find places for cheaper but not as nice.

@Dan: When you travel from one area to another (e.g. Dumageti to Subic Bay), do you uproot everything you own/have? If yes, how many bags is that? If no, do you setup a home base somewhere then travel to each destination light then return to prepare for the next destination? I'm curious if you setup a home base then branch out lightly from there.

Just to help you with the pronounciation of Olongapo phonetically (OH-LONG-AH-PO. I lived in the Olongapo area for 15yrs. Some of the time in Barrio Barretto and some of the time in Kalayaan. Yes you can live on $1000 per month but you will be living in a less than desirable location and a run down apt or house. Even $1000 per month for a single person is a bare minimum budget. In the rainy season Olongapo has serious issues with flooding and I mean serious. Subic Bay, (ocean) is very polluted, all the crap that was dumped by the US Navel Base, Raw sewage flowing into the bay and a business draining septic tanks then driving to a location people can't see and pumping it directly into the bay. I could go on and on but I don't want to rain on your parade but once you have spent a year there, then you will know Olongapo as it truly is. Better to head north a little bit, take a bus up to San Antonio and then a trike out to Pundaquit. Clean ocean and just a beautiful place for a days trip. Sit on the beach and watch the sun set behind the Capones Islands. Enjoy you time in the Philippines and remember there are over 7000 islands and Subic Bay is not the greatest that the Philippines has to offer.

Dan it is o long a po. The subic Bay Area is made up of olongapo, the old naval base which is the hottest area, barrio barretto, and subic city. Barrio barretto and subic city are cheaper than olongapo and the old naval base. The cheap public transportation their is jeepneys the yellow ones travel around olongapo and the blue ones go from olongapo to barrio barretto to subic city.
