I lived in Jogya for 2 yrs and rented a gorgeous new house for $83usd a month. This house was in a neighborhood of locals. I couldn't have been happier. Particularly 1 neighbor visited me almost every day. Will never forget my experience there. Very kind people, lovely culture, great food and so much more.

How much English is spoken ? 'Could be' (?) a real pain in the ass for many instances involved just required for everyday living ? --- Perhaps a local "helper'' could be hired very cheaply to 'help' with negotiations and language translations needed for ideal results ? (if needed)

Java (outside big city like Jakarta and Surabaya) is arguably pretty affordable, most of area have minimum wage under $150. So $700 is mostly salary of manager or senior manager in some of local company. Again, that is outside big city like Jakarta or Surabaya. Also, Yogyakarta is capital of Indonesian student, as English speaker, you can easily get side job as teacher there.

Jogjakarta is also beautiful and artful as Bali but everythig is much much less expensive compared to Bali. Which is cost me around $ ±300 per month I use motorcycle for daily transportation and only use my car for weekend and i spent around $ ±150 per month I pay around $ ±75 for electricity and water per month I pay around $ +100 for both of my child schools. A comfortable house for local people is different from the standard of comfort of people from developed countries. Let's take Bali for example, although it is very expensive to live in Bali, but local people are still there, they are becoming more prosperous with the increasing number of foreigners coming. The arrival of foreigners not only brings the risk of rising prices, they also bring opportunities for local prosperity.

If I wasn't too lazy to cook it would probably be even cheaper, but yes Indonesia is not just Bali, and Java as a whole has plenty of places that are affordable, but to keep it simple id say Yogyakarta/Solo/Surabaya/Bandung and Jakarta are the only places you would consider due to the infrastructure and access to everything you need.

I'd say the people of Yogyakarta are the friendliest I've ever met. Regarding Kate's experience in a hospital in Yogyakarta, I can confirm it's true. They don't treat you like a client but rather like family. The nurses treat you as if you were their brother or sister. I know this because I have also been a patient in a hospital in Yogyakarta. I once told my brother that if I ever have to be on my deathbed in a hospital, I hope it's in a hospital in Yogyakarta. I also want to mention that Yogyakarta is known as 'the student city' because it has many universities. Lately I have been really dreaming of moving to Indonesia or someplace like it, but I’ve been really afraid of getting malaria because I know how much mosquitoes like me. Does anybody have any experiences or knowledge to share with me on that subject? Obviously, you can wear repellent, but I doubt you’re gonna remember that every single day for yearsand something is likely to get through sooner or later.

The truth is Jogjakarta has a massive problem with trash as there is nowhere for landfill. The rubbish builds up to disgusting levels at times and many people will burn all the rubbish just on the streets. Burning everything including all plastics and rubbers. Ive spent lots of time in Jogja and love it but the rubbish is real problem that has no solution in site.

I have a house in Jogjakarta. And am thinking to retire there eventually. The house is under my niece’s (Indonesian Citizen) name. I choose Yogyakarta because I feel it’s a peaceful city, not so commercialized. People are friendly and sincere. Tourists who go to Yogyakarta are mostly interested in culture. Also you interested to learn about spiritualism, learn to meditate and about the universe without touching religions. The Moslems have the hindus cultures, involved with praying to ancestores graves, flowers offerings. Buy milder than Bali. It’s a pleasant city.

Sounds nice, but the thing is you can’t just pack up and go there. You have to have a job or a spouse or some way to get a visa to live there. My wife is from Indonesia. Also, it’s hot. And as you see you with her house, most of them do not have AC. So are you gonna have to learn how to deal with that heat and humidity. And it’s bad trust me. And it’s not very lucky that you’re going to get a job with any Indonesian company unless you have some critical skill. And don’t forget about volcanoes. Lol I think they have more than any other country.

@@CottageGurl You'd be surprised. I have lived in Bali for 18 years. I have BPJS healthcare, and in May this year I was told that I needed a gall-bladder operation. The doctor in Bali Mandara hospital that I spoke to, turned out to be the surgeon for my op. There was no waiting time required. I was given a room with 2 beds, TV, bathroom/shower. The op went like clockwork. The staff were great, and the food was good. I was there for 4 days and had subsequent follow-up (control) meetings to ascertain a good outcome. I heartily recommend Bali for medical care if you have BPJS. I have Class 1 BPJS which costs me about £7.50 ($10 or so) per month. That is a no-brainer in my reckoning.

Nope BPJS is excellent. Back in 2022 my bro got stroke and had to spend a month at hospital and we paid nothing, then he had CT scan and still paid nothing. Then not long afterward my dad got ill (diabetic), he spent a week at ICU before passed away, we only paid 2m (roughly 160USD) for extra medicines uncovered by BPJS.

that's the thing, in Indonesia you have to use "agent" to do paperwork or else the government staff will never processed your paperwork unless you give them "envelope" with money in it. Unlike in most western country, they have standard requirement and stick to it and get things done. In Indonesia, the immigration staff will ask different things every time , different people will give you different answers for the same questions and send you run around, giving you a hard time unless you show them a think envelope.
