Java (outside big city like Jakarta and Surabaya) is arguably pretty affordable, most of area have minimum wage under $150. So $700 is mostly salary of manager or senior manager in some of local company. Again, that is outside big city like Jakarta or Surabaya. Also, Yogyakarta is capital of Indonesian student, as English speaker, you can easily get side job as teacher there.

If you want to live or stay even cheaper than Yogyakarta, pls try live or stay in Surakarta ( we called Solo ), [ still around in Central Java ]. Because the area with the cheapest cost of living in Indonesia is only Surakarta [ or Solo ] Surakarta [ or Solo ] is still related to Yogyakarta, because they both have the HERITAGE of two Royal Javanese. And Surakarta [ or Solo ] is still very culturally maintained and there is almost NO CRIME. Surakarta [ or Solo ] is still quieter than Yogyakarta. But in Surakarta [ or Solo ] , there is a strict curfew, so all restaurants, cafes and malls, even street foods, closed at 9 pm. and the distance between Surakarta [ or Solo ] and Yogyakarta is around 64.7 km. From Yogyakarta it only takes 2 hours to Surakarta [ Solo ] by car, if you take the train from Yogyakarta to Surakarta [ Solo ], it only takes 1 hour.
