Western standard 1BR appartments with pool in Siem Reap are about 350-450, without aircon cost. The $150 ones are pretty basic. Electricity, having one aircon running, can be $130 / per month Groceries, including cheeses and high quality meat/seafood are about $500. Add costs to eat out. Average common living costs are about $1000-1300 in total, if you don‘t want to live too basic. Maybe not mentioned - that it is quite hot, 34 degrees during the year and 2 months up to 40 degrees (April and May). Yes, I live here, too.

If you could really eat, sleep, and travel like locals, you can stretch your mighty $$$ much further. There are always pros and cons no matter where we live as life is short to do the things we don't love doing. Be mindful and open minded with your surroundings as locals still live with only a few dollars a day. Cambodia has come a long way since the prolonged civil war officially ended in 1998. I've returned to live here since my retirement for ten years now from US. Most of my family members did not survive the horrific genocide there. Cambodia might not be suitable for everyone but you can give it a try as it's like a new kid in a block comparing to the neighbors. Peace from a genocide survivor ✌️

These figures are not correct. You can’t live on 500usd. You could just about survive on that amount but it would be no kind of life. Budget 1200 for one or 1500 for two, and that’s by no means extravagant. 1500 was our lowest month in Cambodia it was usually around 1800 and rarely did we spend more than 15-20usd on a meal. Does anyone know if Traditional Chinese medicine shops to self-prescribe are available in Siem Reap, as well as Ayurvedic medicine (I order wonderful powders and healing herbs used in Chinese Traditional Medicine and Ayurveda out of Lazada in Thailand, but nothing like that appears to exist in Cambodia I have looked for Chinese herbal shops in Siem Reap and saw a list of about 2 shops that state Chinese herbs are sold I know there are many more stores in Phnom Penh, and perhaps I could take a bus to that city for a day and buy herbs. $800 to $1000 is going to exclude a lot. Eating out in nice places would be out, no health insurance, if you are 60+ ( you can get insurance at 60+, but it costs) no vehicle, no travel home or travel in the region, and, as mentioned, no aircon. It's cheap, but 1000 would be very basic, achievable if you have low expectations, or you enjoy a frugile life, which many do. Comfortable is $2000 per month.

Cambodia has been popular to retire for at least 20 years. I went there then and there were lots of expats I met who had been there a long time even then! A lot of money has been invested in the country, especially from China, who have completely ruined Sihanoukville and turned it into a kind of Chinese casino city from a lovely cool vibe beach town. Yes it’s still a country everyone should visit and check out for themselves! Electricity bills can be high if you use Aircon, much more than Thailand. The heat can be unbearable in the hotter months of April/May! Kampot is another popular place to stay, it’s a much smaller town and a pleasant place with beautiful mountains nearby! $1500 to $2000 is a comfortable budget, to live a reasonable lifestyle imo!
Sad to hear about what happened in Sihanoukville. I was last there circa 2017, right when the Chinese were building what I think was their first casino near the beach. I heard it went downhill from there for the locals and for Westerners.

Sure looks like a great retirement in a wonderful city on my $1500+ SS check. --- Much better than - 'anywhere' - in Biden's America or in any of the 50 States ! ( ? ) Likely won't spend more than $1000 in an extravagant month of expenses ? My normal is a bit thrifty and mostly frugal - seeking deals and good prices as a way of life. Minimalistic is not something I am against - rather it suits me just fine ! > A modest studio - easy to clean and cheap to cool - is what I would prefer. --- However - I do like to be - "comfortable" - and will gladly spend $100/mo. on electric - to keep cool and not be sweating all the time & feeling the need of a shower constantly !!! Siem Reap appears to be my kind of place and the food variety is terrific. Other expats are quite content and very satisfied living there also - not just Deborah. kzbin.info/www/bejne/eJTUmIJngrl3iJYsi=uxCWATKDA6RoqvIO
