Few years ago, I have known this one American English teacher under Fullbright program who teached English in my kampung(village) in rural Pahang State, Malaysia. One day he got a mild fever & he wanted to go to the hospital. But the nearest hospital to my kampung is about 40km away and since he owned only a motorcycle, he doesnt want to travel far by motorcycle just to see a doctor to cure his mild fever. So he end up went to a Klinik Desa Kerajaan which is a small Government Village Clinic. He didn't not expect much from the village clinic and didn't put high hope that he will be treated well in that village clinic. But to cut the story short, he was very very impress on the treatment he got from that village clinic, he was so surprised that the equipment are very updated, latest and what make him even more surprised was that he got a medicine that he said was comparable to the medicine he got from Pharmacies in US that was costly, but here he paid only RM 1 ringgit for the whole treatment including medicines!!! He was absolutely speechless that he got such a quality & proffesional treatment from a Government clinic & almost free of charge. Because of this and many other things including friendly people, food, he felt so in love with Malaysia & didn't want to go back to US even though he is the only son and wanted to bring his single mother from North Carolina to Malaysia. So he applied to extend his teaching in Malaysia from one year to two years, three years until he cannot get extension anymore. After that he applied to work at American embassy in KL and got it but after two years again he cannot get extension. He tried to apply other jobs in KL but cannot find jobs that suitable with his qualification. He was so frustrated. So he said he wanted to further his study to get his Masters in Europe and maybe will work in Europe. I dont know where you are right now, lost contact with you David. But if you ever wants to come back to Malaysia, you are most welcome David!! You know where to find us!

I am from Medan, Indonesia. My late mother used to go to Island Hospital, and my father got his heart checked in Adventis hospital in Penang. It's actually quite expensive for us but the service and the quality is just awesome. The doctors, nurses, and all medical staffs are really caring, compassionate, and attentive. Overall very satisfying.

Malaysia is still very behind Singapore. And without Singapore being no.1 major investor in Malaysia & helped in your education & healthcare systems, Malaysia can’t really progress that far. My husband is Italian and he did not keep up with his health insurance here. Just last month, he had an mri done and found that he has a tumour and fluid in his brain. He has no choice but to seek neurosurgeons from public hospitals. He is fortunate that he gets a discount coz he has a Malaysian spouse. A biopsy in a private hospital costs RM40k but in a public hospital, it is less than RM5k. My daughter took an mri in a public hospital years back and we just paid RM5 for registration fee.

When I first when for the $0.25 dental work, I was highly sceptical about the quality but was pleasantly surprised at how good it was. They were professional, caring and the equipments were somewhat up to date. It's a really unbelievable service for the cost.

The issue with government clinics/hospitals is the healthcare staff/facilities vs patients ratio. Hence why the wait time, bedside service etc alll suffered due to it. Not much that can be done about it too. The pay is lower compared to private sector / overseas.

I had it done by a dental nurse in a truck to the schools at 12 years old. 7 years ago had dental work done in Tulsa OK that cost an arm and a leg but it was horrible that I had to go to Costa Rica to correct it.

public healthcare in Msia is wholly funded by the tax system. Hope can introduce a semi-insurance scheme, so it can recover the actual cost. Subsidy is not sustainable.

I believe our health system is very similar to the British commonwealth countries. Many of our specialists, especially in the private centers, are trained by the Royal medical colleges in the UK.

Yes the gov clinic charge rm 1 for consultation after medical report comes out. Blood test is free. However that does not include surgery cost. But it will be minimal. Many many years ago, i had my appendic removed in a gov hospital for less than 80 ringgit. Which is less than usd 20. However, gov hospitals are always busy and surgery waiting time is not so good. So if possible, we need to go to a private hospital which is relatively expensive. Therefore, we purchase insurance policy. Gov hospitals are for the poor or serious cases like dengue fever or covid19 etc etc. Doctors are good in both gov and private hospitals. Yes malaysia's medical facilities attract many regional customers like rich indonesians. Expats too.

We are Malaysian and urgently need medical attention for a family friend and we evaluated the time we need to spend at government hospital hence we opted the private wing of Hospital Chancellor Tuanku Mukriz, Cheras. We are happy with the treatment and the waiting time was bearable and the fee was less pricey than the other private hospital

Another very interesting video. It’s interesting to hear about the comparison between medical treatment in Malaysia and the US. Here in Australia, medical treatment is free, visits to the doctor, blood tests and other medical procedures are all covered by Medicare. There are the occasional exceptions for such things as cosmetic surgery or very specialised treatment, but generally speaking everything is covered. If you are so inclined, you can cover these exceptions with some form of private cover. As a retiree most, if not all are covered by Medicare. I am certainly interested to hear how expensive actual medications cost in Malaysia, again in Australia, the most lower income or pension aged people need to pay for there medication is $6.50 per item and even then, if an individual reaches a certain amount during the year, the rest of their medications are completely free.

I am Malaysian, living in Melbourne. Malaysia Healthcare is not expensive if you are Malaysia citizen. The government provides very low costs healthcare services. Malaysia private healthcare is very affordable for expats but very expensive for below average Malaysia income earners. However, I terms of services and quality, Malaysia outperform Australia.

When I was in KL, I usually joined a Facebook or Meetup groups created by locals from KL which caters to specific interests like local foodies hunting, hiking or trekking, or dine in some fancy restaurant or movie nights. There's usually some expats from various countries tagging along with the groups. And the group members itself is so racially diverse with english language as the medium language, but mostly from mid working class of KL city. We did a lot of various activities together every single week like mountain climbing, waterfall trekking, paragliding, white water rafting, waterparks, bowling and futsal, karaoke and movie nights, and also hosting celebration in our homes like Christmas, Chinese New Year and Eid together. Fun times!

In a semi government hospital such as UiTM Hospital, I paid RM 12 for my medication monthly (my BP medication and Cholesterol medication). My blood test is at RM 60 and RM15 for registration/consultation (once every 6 month now). Thus my medical expenditure totalled about RM294 (about USD 75) annually. Oooh I forgot about the delivery payment as they deliver the medication to my house now since the implementation of MCO (RM5.30/monthly delivery) so it comes too RM63.60 (USD16) annually. For NON-citizen first time registration/consultation fee would be RM60 and follow up registration/consultation would be RM30. But for medication you may have to pay it in full.

Rm 60 to bukan full bloodwork and urine test and its for 47 years old me kalau untuk senior citizen dapatlah diskaun dlm 50 percent on blood test, tapi ada ubat yang mahal kena bayar close to full price juga macam ubat cair darah etc.... yang saya cerita kat atas ialah ubat2an utk my blood pressure and high cholestrol. Tapi for my asthma saya kena bayar rm45 for symbicort (harga kat luar 100 lebih)

I spent about $100 USD for about 50 tests. The reviewing doctor said I should have a CT scan and I should speak to a specialist. The total bill was $733 USD for the second review. That's about $833 for the two visits.

My family and I just recovered from covid. We were having moderate symptoms of fever and cough. We were home quarantined but need to get to the hospital to be checked by a doctor every 2 days. We were given covid pills (Paxlovid), the same one Biden took to treat his covid. Yup it is all for free (swab test and all the pills) and I am thankful to be born in this country.

I can understand why Americans try to escape the US, as in Malaysia, in Australia we have universal healthcare, so doctor’s visits, other treatments and hospital stays are all free. This is certainly an important consideration when thinking about retiring in another country.

Health care is only free for Australians who don't pay income tax, unless your doctor bulk bills your visit won't be free either, the average Australian pays thousands of bucks per year with the Medicare levy, having said that it's a lot better system than in USA, for what it's worth.

FYI, Singapore is most popular country to live & work in Southeast Asia region as it is the richest country in asia & world 2nd rich. Everyone wants to work in Singapore becos it has highest salary in asia too. Sg is the ONLY asia country that able to compete with top 10 world ranking for highest salary level. Fact is, Malaysia avg salary has been stagnant for decades, their avg salary is 5 times lower than Singapore. Indonesia & the rest or Southeast Asia are worst,their avg salary is about 10-13 times lower than Singapore. That’s why Malaysia have, in many ways tried to catch up with developed & advance Singapore but still left behind. So much so that they often tried to copycat Singapore methods or many things from Singapore. They even changed their passport colour in recent yrs to SAME red colour so that they can be like their rich neighbour, which has the world No.1 most powerful passport>Singapore😇

Yes if u compared the cost of living then Malaysia alot cheaper than Singapore, which is about 3-4 times cos their currency still vy weak with exchange rate about S$1 : RM $3.2. We used to share same currency rate at $1 to RM $1 in 1970s.😇 But Singapore still a gd place to retire too simply due to convenience & accessibility to many elderly friendly amenities as well as having advance & best healthcare system in asia. That’s why Singapore is one of the top 5 countries in the world with highest longevity, Malaysia not even in world top 10.

@@arobbo3153 short answer, yes. Won't cost u an arm and a leg. There are providers like AXA, AIA, Allianz etc that can cover your insurance need as expats.

@@arobbo3153 well I am Malaysian so we don't need insurance. Citizen only pay (US$ 0.20... yes 20 cents) equivalent to RM1.00 to get any form of medical treatment. So u can google or see some other vids by travel vloggers here in YT or ask this channel owner who is a foreigner but now living in Malaysia under the MM2H program. Never heard any expats say it is expensive so definitely dirt cheap and great value as Malaysia is even a Medical Tourism destination.

If u are govt servant you will get free to almost all medical facilities. Me myself as a cancer patient had a treatment in General Hospital for free. I only have to present what we call Guarantee Letter (GL) everytime I go for a treatment. Not only that, i got to use CPAP Machine that cost RM17k for a unit and it's free also because i'm govt servant. Alhamdulillah. I also need to buy one medicine that cost RM700++ per unit and it's free also.

We have universal healthcare in Malaysia. For all Malaysians here when they go to government clinics, it will only cost them RM1 for any treatment (medicine included). Government hospital will only cost us RM5 and for any sort of surgery, it will never exceed RM500 (bed included). Don't really need any health insurance here unless you want to go private.

You can even get an extension on the 90 days if needed for recuperation and follow up. Many of the hospitals will even give you an indicative cost. A private room in a hospital is around if not under US$100 a day plus your treatment costs. It's a bargain

thank for the info.. we have Medicare in Australia which is free.. The catch is you might have to queue up for long while if it is not a life and death health issue. Most ppl like me have private insurance which cost me maybe AUD 150 for month. It will pay maybe 60% of the private hospital surgery fee in case if I cannot wait for the queue in public hospital. I think if I move to another country, I will probably cancel my private insurance and spend it in the new country instead.. Private Health care in Australia is extremely expensive similar to US I guess.

Almost same here in Malaysia actually when it comes to the long wait, need to have insurance coverage or money to speed up on surgery hence people with insurance coverage would just go to private hospitals. But sometimes the public hospital can transfer the patient to another public hospital in case of emergency, which is also good. Happened to my late father when he was hospitalised for kidney failure, he got transferred to another public hospital in another state for emergency surgery as the local public hospital here is full. As for me, after long thinking, I cancelled my insurance policy as I'm already covered with government insurance for work which is so cheap, and also covered with vehicle insurance policy in case of accidents. Too many insurance policies! 😆

Malaysia has made healthcare and halal food as part of tourism. Hospitals in Malaysia provide world class services and proven for it and for halal food, Malaysia has become the halal hub tourism for Muslim and non Muslim all around the world. It mean Muslims will not have to worry about the status of foods and for non muslims... well, simply enjoy the foods :). If you come to Malaysia, you don't have to worry about foods... you can find most food in the world in Malaysia

In Malaysia, people work to live, and in USA people live to work, and I have done that. The only thing that somewhat concerns me in Malaysia is the local politics and the country's subjugation to the communist China. On my inlaws side I've seen some bad treatments in MY. i.e. relative dying from being prescribed wrong medication and recently an elderly relative who suffered multiple issues but also had Cov. Once he tested negative they asked him to be picked up without final checks and sent home even wthotut discharge paper. He was still in bad nick from other issues and died few hours later. I am considering potential future expat opp with my company but if there is one thing that makes me hesitant it's the health care system.

Andrew, if you get a chance, please do a follow up on what medical insurance options there are (in country vs "international"). I have heard that Malaysia is tied with Thailand for the #1 medical tourism destination. I'm sure that with the much cheaper medical costs in Malaysia, it MUST be fairly cheap for medical insurance, even for senior citizens (I wish that Medicare would pay for medical work in Malaysia since it is cheaper than having it done in the U.S.). Would there be a difference between going to a "public" hospital and a "private" hospital in cost, or in cost of health insurance?

Thanks for the suggestion. I think I might try to do a video with my insurance agent. Honestly, there are so many different policies! I pay about $85 US a month for mine but it is only for hospitalisation costs. The rest is so affordable that I pay out of pocket! 😊

I'd be interested in options if I decided to NOT stay in one country, but move around between Malaysia (my first choice), Indonesia (2nd), Thailand, and the Philippines. But I'm also interested in what options for excellent coverage just in Malaysia (which I understand is now tied with Thailand for #1 best for medical work). I really like your breaking the video's into specific themes, instead of too much "general" information in just one. Any chance you could include visiting a hospital & doctors, to discuss major medical events being handled in Malaysia vs neighborhood clinics & doctor, to discuss minor scrapes & stuff?

I just had a single root canal done here in Australia by an Indian trained dentist and it cost 2K....the treatment was rough and half the equipment didn't seem to work and they simply bypassed it saying everything is fine.On top of that the Dentist said i need 50 root canals yet only have 30 teeth...you get what I'm saying...it was way over treatment, If I had it done in say Thailand it would have cost $400 with US trained Dentist...The West is slowly becoming 3rd world

Had a minor skin tag removal. Called four dermatologist in Florida. $180. For consultation fee None of them could give me the exact fee for removal which means it can be as low as $100 but as high as $2000. Also no information on lab fee if additional test needs to be done. Called a clinica in Panama. $75. Consultation fee $75 procedure fee $80. If the doctor wants to send it to lab. Lab was not needed and I was out in 30 minutes after paying $150 to the penny. Clinic was neat clean high quality service. Do I need to say more?
