@lindadorman28696 ай бұрын
I love the Chase Reserve card. The $550 annual fee is fully offset by a $300 travel credit (that I also use at home for local transit passes), Priority Pass, Global Entry/TSA Pre-Check, auto rental insurance coverage, travel medical coverage and partner benefits. I have several other Chase cards and can easily transfer points from those cards to Reserve so those points stack up quickly! I will also say Chase Reserve Customer Service is top-notch - anytime I have questions or problems, they take care of it promptly.

I'm not seeing the travel medical coverage listed anywhere (as a benefit to the Chase Reserve card). Can you possibly post a link to a page that describes that benefit? Thanks!
@Travelviapoints6 ай бұрын
the travel insurance coverages, in general, only cover you for round trip "paid" tickets. if you book mix in an award flight, your screwed. you would have to be "all-in" on the reserve card for travel expenses to get the desired coverage. most likely your better off with getting add-on travel insurance when you book the award flights and using health coverage like "safety wings." In the end, the whole point of travel hacking is to book award flights and not pay for most tickets.
@Travelviapoints6 ай бұрын
I will follow up with saying I do like the reserve card for separating biz from personal expenses and the wider 3% category vs the amex gold.

@@Travelviapoints Linda had mentioned that "travel medical coverage" was provided with this card, so that's what I'm trying to see (where that is listed as a benefit of this card) to see if that would save me from having to purchase international medical insurance when traveling.

You mentioned the benefit of getting 3x on travel with Chase which I highly concur, but then recommended the Sapphire Preferred which only gets 2x. The only Chase cards that do give you 3x on travel are the Sapphire Reserve (unlimited 3x) and Ink Preferred (capped at $150,000 at 3x and then 1x per year). The CSR is $550 a year but with the easy $300 travel credit, it works out to be only $155 more than the CSP…and you do get quite a bit for those $155.

Thanks for pointing it out. We got it mixed up with the dining. Should have been dining and not travel.

@@GroundedLifeRetirementTravel No problem happy to help. I am a fellow world traveler and think maybe you should reconsider the Chase Sapphire Reserve. In my experience it is hands down the best travel card available in the US. The Amex Platinum is great for lounge access and 5x on flights, but the CSR is a premium travel card you can use all the time. The 5x on flights is great but the Amex insurance only covers you on round trip tickets paid fully with the Platinum, the CSR covers travel that is only partially paid and also one way trips. Plus there is the Emergency Medical and Dental benefit that only the CSR and Ritz Carlton card offer. While it’s not ideal to rely on credit card medical insurance, it’s nice having.

In addition to acquiring your cards and planning your travel, you should also have a plan for obtaining top tier status with Hyatt or IHG. That plan will dictate which card you'll use for which purchases (as you maximize point multipliers for different spend categories, like travel), and when you'll plan to transfer points from your premium card(s) to your hotel (or airline). Maintaining top tier status with a hotel chain comes with many perks like higher point multipliers, suite upgrades, hotel lounge access with free food, free parking, waived resort fees, etc. Those benefits can add up to even more than the credit card benefits for frequent travelers.

@@saylorgirl799 It's different for each hotel loyalty program. To earn Hyatt Globalist you need to earn 60 Qualifying nights each year. Each night's stay is a Qualifying night whether it's paid or free on points. You can also earn Qualifying nights based on credit card spend.

Hey guys - absolutely excellent video full of great information. A few questions: if you think chase points are best overall, can you perhaps go into a little more detail on why you prefer Amex platinum over chase sapphire reserve? I had both at one point and like you couldn’t justify both, but I chose to get rid of Amex. So I’m curious to understand your reasoning better. I found chase points better as well and liked the lower annual fee and lounge access. Chase also has the annual travel credit whereas Amex platinum I think was only airline incidental credits? Next is more of a request for a future video - I would love if you guys would put together a video that explains how to transfer chase or Amex points to an airline for use on booking a partner award. I find that very confusing. I think you alluded to it in this video. For example if you want a flight on Iberia airlines that is a one world member, I think there is a way to transfer chase points to say American Airlines, who is also a member, and somehow book the Iberia flight using American points? Any help with that would be HUGE! Thanks in advance!

Hey folks, you knew I'd pop up after your Canadian advice, right? So the problem for Canuckleheads is that the Aeroplan Credit cards all charge foreign transaction fees. Unbelievable but true. Just went through all the offerings on the Aeroplan site and the CIBC, TD and Amex all have the fees, so unless the card was going to be exclusively used to pay for airfare on Air Canada's site in $CDN the points would mostly if not all and then some wiped out by the conversion fee. It's really hard to find a card that doesn't have the fees up here. I've got the Scotiabank one, but the points it accumulate are less usable in your scenarios. Thanks for everything, keep up the amazing knowledge train.

I have the Brim World Elite Mastercard which has been great for travel. It even has cancellation insurance. However, I just received notice that they will be cancelling the free foreign transaction fees in May :( It’s probably still worth it for the travel insurance if you are booking your airfare and hotels in advance in Canadian dollars. Wise offers a Visa Debit card that doesn’t charge any foreign transaction fees and has up to two free foreign ATM withdrawals per month.

Is your only reasoning for not selecting the CSR over the CPR because you have one of the AMX cards?
@GroundedLifeRetirementTravel6 ай бұрын
We have both CSR and Platinum, so we are doubled up on Priority Pass cards. We will likely only keep one, and it'll be the Amex. If we didn't have the Amex we would get the CSR to get the Priority Pass, it's been super valuable to us.
@jwilly53366 ай бұрын
@@GroundedLifeRetirementTravel that is what I see also. I did the math and with the CSR as compared to the CSP you only have to redeem 100k additional points through the portal to be at the break even level. I only do this with rental cars in certain scenarios where it makes sense. Everything else goes to Hyatt or last minute united international flights or SW flights. Mainly Hyatt. Most points go to travel partners.

So for travel, the Chase Sapphire Preferred 3x is better than the Amex Platinum 5x? Is that right?
@joeliewan6 ай бұрын
One question about mixing the Marriott Chase and AmEx being an issue. Can you elaborate? I don't think Chase has a Business Marriott card any more. I prefer the specs on the Chase Boundless but if there is a problem mixing I may need to get 2 AmEx Marriott cards.
@GroundedLifeRetirementTravel6 ай бұрын
It is a problem to mix. You're better off with one or the other.

How early do you recommend applying for these cards? We plan to start traveling full time in 4-5 years.
@GroundedLifeRetirementTravel6 ай бұрын
Some of them, like the hotel cards are good to get right away. The annual fee is less than $100 and you get a free night award each year, so if you are going to stay even 1 night in a hotel it makes it worth it. That way you can accumulate points over the years. If you aren't traveling overseas you can wait on the lounge access cards.

Thanks so much for the information. Do you have a US address for your cards? The reason I asked is that I have an IRA, and I have been told that I will not be able to look at IRA’s websites overseas nor have a US credit card with an overseas address. I have been overseas and had problems accessing my military credit union website. I started my credit union website in 1985. Thanks again for all the information.

They said that they use their U.S. mail forwarder’s address. However, I just tried applying for the Chase Sapphire card using my mail forwarder’s address and they would not approve it without proof that I live at that address. 😢

You mentioned that with The World of Hyatt card they waive the resort fees. Does the Marriot Bonvoy Boundless waive fees for their Vegas Resorts? (Excalibur, New York-New York, etc.)

They don't, which makes it a much worse deal

Well, I tried to get the travel cards you recommend and ruined my near perfect credit score. Even though we have an American Express Platinum card we were denied the Marriot card the Hyatt card and embroiled in a mess. I filed a complaint. We have no debt our purchases on other cards are paid in full every month. They said we applied for to many open cards. Angry and confused....how everyone got their cards. We planned to use them this summer. What did I do wrong?

Is travel insurance necessary?
@DaveM-FFB6 ай бұрын
Travel insurance is highly recommended, particularly for cruises and airlines because in most cases you have large upfront purchases which become mostly non-refundable leading up to your trip. Suppose you spent $10K for a bucket list trip and you had some sort of illness at the last minute and couldn't travel? Or suppose you required medical care while on a trip. Or suppose you booked an international airline ticket to go with your cruise, but your cruise was cancelled? If you spend a lot on travel, or travel multiple times per year, an annual policy with Allianz is something to consider. You can choose how much coverage to purchase to suit your needs and budget.
@mississippiapple10786 ай бұрын
@DaveM-FFB thank you. Question, if I had medical care, wouldn't my medical insurance cover it? If big flights or cruises were canceled - wouldn't they reimburse me?
