YES! I also am finding my respect for him (already high) is growing as I watch 100 days. It's one thing to stick to a project when you have a natural inclination for it. That John repeatedly puts himself in these very un-John-like situations for the sake of the journey is really something.

Fun fact: in first grade I fell down while roller skating and hurt my tailbone. 10 years later, I found out that I had actually broken it in 3 places and, at the ripe old age of 17, had arthritis. In my butt. Goodness, how lame is that? Anyways, hope your tailbone feels better, John! Great job on this journey :)

John, thank you for the transparency. It's so hard to put yourself out there, even when you're very good at something. I really appreciate the fact that you show us the full picture -- falls, injuries, setbacks and late retirements from any sport career. No matter how good or bad you are at these activities, I'm pretty sure you never forget to be awesome. So thanks. :)

I had NEVER skated before I started playing. I weighed 50 pounds more when I started, so I definitely wasn't in shape. I trip over my feet regularly. But after 2 years of playing roller derby, I'd say I'm halfway decent! It was the best thing I ever did for myself, physically, mentally, and emotionally. I'm in great shape, I've found a way to manage my depression, and I have so many amazing friends!! 10/10 would recommend playing derby.
@shawnmarie20048 жыл бұрын
I recommend roller derby to EVERYONE. I started playing last year and even though I'm still learning and I'm not very good yet, I've found this amazing community of friends, which is something I desperately needed. Most leagues have a bootcamp-like beginner course that you can start in. My own (Rose City Rollers in Portland OR) has a full-on Derby 101 class that you can take as many times as you need to before moving up into Skills & Drills. Long story short, HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. There's leagues all over the world, so most likely there's one near you.
@christinastone37288 жыл бұрын
I started in 2014 just before I had turned 22 years old. I had never skated a day in my life up until then. My coaches helped learn and get stronger, and I've leaned out, lost fat, and gained confidence. Roller derby has changed my life and I highly recommend it to everyone!!

I just realised I've been watching 100 days without commenting at all. So, let me just say: THIS IS SO INSPIRING! It's amazing to see all the effort you guys are doing. It's amazing to see you keep trying and it's amazing this project is so open and honest that we can see what works for you and what doesn't. I think it helps to create a healthy "workout mindset", in which we are not looking to accomplish perfection - not of our bodies, not of the exercise itself. We are just looking to get moving. And is completely natural to fail or to adjust better to some exercises than others. I'm so glad I can watch this. I'm so proud of being part of a community that values this :) Thanks for making & sharing this.

Thanks for your comments about bumps in the road. I had a bit of a 2 week slump too (I'm trying to eat 3 meals a day and walk 3500 steps a day) but last weekend managed to get myself motivated again, and this week is going much better so far. I think failure is an important part of sustainable success. I don't want to head in hard, burn myself out and then give up altogether. Exploring when and why I find things difficult means I'm much more likely to make this a lifelong change rather than a thing that'll fail after a couple months.

"I hate this shot, Sheridan" ;) One of the marks of someone who practices something a lot is that they make it look all so easy... so easy that we often don't appreciate the amount of hard work they put into it (and worse, sometimes belittling that work by saying "oh they're just talented..." like it's somehow innate and easy). Thanks for reminding me that we all can learn and develop, and that we often look like, and it feels like, poop along the way. :)

from what I've sen sometimes is that not as a working person, but as a person that is part of a family with children, it is that all dietary and meal plans should also apply to them. not the portions and of course make exceptions if anyone has any special need, but aside from that if you have candies and cookies instead of say fruits and healthy alternative snacks, you yourself will be tempted to snack on them when you get cravings. belive me when i tell you that once you inform your children they WILL hold you accountable for whatever you eat, they are the perfect monitor for other (not so much for themselves). i am an older sister of another two girls, and once my dad had to go into diet of reducing and then completely eliminating red meats from his meals, he followed and we held him accountable. years have passed and we have slowly it surely followed a more healthy eating lifestyle, not perfect, but better to what we had before... wow this got long TL:DR EDUCATE YOUR CHILDREN ABOUT YOUR DIET AND MAKE THE FAMILY FOLLOW ALONG, ITS MUCH EASIER AND HEALTHY FOR ALL

I would hav LOVED to try this! my favourite form of workout is fighting. at the moment I do something called buhurt. that's a full contact sport with two teams. the goal is to (by pretty much any means) get your opponents to the ground. once three points of your body touches the ground you're out. and the best part is we do this in full medieval armour and use swords and shields, or axes, or halberds. my favourite thing to do is punch people with the shield. so fun
