Hi John, I've never done exercise but I subbed to this just because I love your work. However I've been inspired. My eating is better, I've lost weight and the most extraordinary thing is that I''ve almost finished a 30 day yoga challenge. I am also diagnosed with OCD and, my word, how this has helped!! I've also stArted some mindfulness practice which compliments the CBT I've done in the past. Thank you both so much for going on this journey and although I had absolutely no intention to join in ... I have and I thank you for the healthier (very nearly 40 year old) me!

I really appreciate the reminder in this video that it is more about priority than time. I have had a hard time remembering to take care of my health (both mental and physical) over the past few months because of school and college applications (they were very stressful). Even though I am no longer extremely busy, I find myself making excuses about why I am not eating better or exercising as much as I should. I tend to say, "My grades are more important than my health. Just push past it," but that is an incredibly bad strategy on sooooo many levels. Thanks again.

I tried to do the meditation thing, using that Headspace app John mentioned, and the first day it put me to sleep... My phone died, because I have it set to not turn off on its own, so the next day I plugged my phone in before starting, and I fell asleep again. I have learned that I can not meditate, but it's great for helping with my insomnia! So, thanks!!

Waterflame in which position do you do it?If you don't already, meditating while sitting upright is recommended. When during the day do you meditate? If you do it in the evening after a long day, you're more likely to fall asleep than if you meditate on the morning, say after breakfast or a shower so that you're wide awake. (Btw, if you fall asleep in a few minutes as soon as you lay down during the day, you're sleep deprived. I'm really sorry about your insomnia, I know what a pain it can be. Since meditating seems to put you to sleep, is it linked to anxiety or your brain bombarding you non-stop with thought after thought? Have you tried relaxation/sophrology exercises? Those have really helped me :) oh and headspace also has a special meditation exercise to put you to sleep in the full version.)
@Waterflame7 жыл бұрын
I was sitting, upright on the floor, the first time. Still fell asleep. Woke up in pain the next morning. Was sitting upright in a chair the second night, and fell asleep. Haven't used it since. I was doing it around 8pm, because that was the only time I had ten free minutes. I am aware that I am sleep deprived, but I normally don'f fall asleep for at least an hour after I go to bed. (And, that's on a good night...)

I've had some major life changes recently (newer, tougher job this year, followed by my husband moving to the other side of the world two weeks ago, with me following him in six weeks), and on Wednesday I had just a shitty day at work. Nothing big, just lots of little shit piled upon shit piled upon shit. Two things helped. Being able to text a coworker who is also my best friend that I was struggling mentally, then spending an hour and a half doing a ballet class, a jazz dance class and a hip hop class that night. I've spent enough time with this instructor that I could tell she was feeling crappy at the start of the night too (she's a professional, and it wouldn't have been noticeable to most others in the class), and that just fell away for both of us as the night went on. I talked to her afterwards about how much better those classes had made me feel mentally, and thanked her, and she responded in the same way. Five years into regular exercise at this point and I would not do away with it for the world. My mental and physical health are leagues better, and I'm so going to miss this particular instructor when I move, because she is an absolute treasure.

Hey! I noticed that when you guys meditate it's always self-directed - but personally I've found that my anxiety has always benefited much more from guided meditations for specific benefits. I do regular ten minute ones before bed that are for deep sleep, and during the day I do fifteen minute ones for anxiety relief, mindfulness, and presence in the moment. I think you guys would find that more helpful! I've always found directing my own meditation to be incredibly frustrating as well.

I lovelovelove the way that exercise has helped your mental health as it has. There's actually a lot of research on the neurology of mental health issues and "getting it out" via movement, exercise, rhythm, etc. that really confirms what you're experiencing. Bessel A. van der Kolk's book *The Body Keeps the Score* has a LOT of information on this. It does focus a through the lenses of psychological trauma a lot, but, he's also quite clear that what we as a society define as "trauma" is not all that's included. So, it's still useful to literally anyone who doesn't THINK they've endured trauma - they have. I really really feel that for someone like you, who understands the intracacies of mental health SO well but has also learned a lot of science through Hank and HTC and CC and all that, you'd really really appreciate that book. It may even help Hank and all those who are trying to tackle SciShow Psych with well-studied, biologically proven psych goodies :)

I'm so happy you tried tennis! It's my favorite sport- it's mental as well as physical, it can be as difficult or as easy as you want it to be, and almost anyone of any age or ability can have fun playing. If they are available in your area you should try a beginners fast feed (usually a series of small drills and games fed by a pro) or a cardio tennis session (tennis drills Incorporated with push ups, burpees, sprints, etc). I find I get the most out of my tennis workouts with these. 😁

Just wondering if you guys have tried yoga before? For John especially I think it would be hugely beneficial - I have never been good at traditional meditation (despite how much i know it helps relieve the anxiety problems I have), but yoga helped me ease my way into meditation in a way that made sense to me. It's also incredibly good for your flexibility and posture so John it will help you get closer those fingertips all the way down to your toes! The first time I tried yoga I came out of the session with a completely changed perspective on exercise and meditation, I would highly HIGHLY recommend you guys give it a go!

John you might try keeping your elbows in closer to your ribs a little more doing pushups. If you widen or narrow your hand placement it'll use different muscle groups too so you can squeeze more reps out in a single setting. It's not really cheating cuz you're still doing pushups but it spreads out the load a little so you can take longer to fatigue. Of course stick to what works for you if one way is uncomfortable.

I wonder if there are any societal/cultural reasons for the "exercise feeling more attainable than nutrition" thing? Could advertising have an affect? More adverts directed towards "eat this junk food!" than to "don't work out today"?
@henrique28957 жыл бұрын
I think hormones play a big role in this. Like, I could eat chocolate and that would cause dopamine and serotonin to be released and I would feel good, or I could eat healthy stuff and I would probably feel a sense of cleanliness and be satisfied with myself, but no considerable amount of hormones (compared to chocolate) would be released. On the other hand, if I exercise I get hormone release too and if I don't I get nothing. I think it's easier to feel pain and then get rewarded for that then trying to deprive yourself of the happy feeling food causes. Maybe there is cultural reasons too, but I don't think that's John's case considering how far he got.
@alicattor14697 жыл бұрын
While probably not as much of an issue for John as others, eating healthy is WAYY more expensive than eating junk food. Like I could survive on less than a a dollar a day eating ramen and kd while I bought 6 apples for 5 dollars recently
@Kaalyn_HOW7 жыл бұрын
It's also a LOT easier to "do something" than to "not do something". It's much easier to commit to doing one thing a day, than delicately balancing and resisting something else all 24-hours of the day. With food it's about controlling cravings, not eating things you shouldn't, being smart about the meals you do make, making sure not to skip meals so you don't get too hungry and binge later, indulge in some cravings but not all, portion control, balance carbs vs veg vs protein, customizing around food allergies, adding time to prepare and shop for meals, having the money and balancing healthy choices in the budget, getting enough fluids but making sure they aren't too caloric, modifying alcohol consumption, etc etc etc. Being balanced in all the areas of diet is its own issue, but literally every minute of the day requires conscious effort to NOT eat food items you may want or crave. ...to NOT do something. Working out on the other had is a simple "I can commit to doing this one thing during my day. I don't have to think about it until that hour that I set aside comes, can give it my all for an hour, and when I'm done I don't have to think about it again until tomorrow orrrr maybe even the next day. Done." It's so much easier to complete ONE task, one time; then a collection of minute, nuanced, and delicate choices every minute of the day.
