Interesting fanfic...but I can't see them just forgiving him if he lived. Dude is just responsible for so much mass murder, so many war crimes, and so much general evilness that it would be kind of ridiculous to let him off. Think of all the people whose family and friends he murdered. "That wasn't me, that was Vader, I'm Anakin now" just isn't a defense that's gonna fly. Anakin is still responsible for his actions when it's all said and done, can't just pin everything on Vader.

Lol yeah, I basically tried to think of a reason that the New Republic would allow him to live... In the Infinities comic, he just shows up in white armor and is like "I can assist you in finding the Emperor" and everyone is like ok cool. I figured the only way he lives and is still somewhat "punished" is with exile and the Barash Vow.

@@RetneysHolocron I think it was a good idea in terms of running Vaders redemption through the senate. However I think it more likely they would demand capital punishment for Vader since prison would be easily broke out of with Vaders power. Though I think it would be cool is after the second death star was destroyed, if Luke took Vader to a secluded sector and rebuilt his armour (though surely there wouldn't be many who did not know who Vader was), THEN Vader declared to Luke alone he would take the Barash Vow and go into exile, leaving the galaxy to believe he was killed on the death star, that would be an open ended "he could come back or we may never see him again" kind of ending. Just my 2c in the moment.

TBH if anakin survived he would simply have to fake his own death. As vader he is a mass murderer, and in the rebublics eye there is no forgiveness for his war crimes. He would have to exile, and hope he's not caught up with

If Anakin survived, he could’ve come out publicly and lied that the empire held him hostage for 2 decades and tortured him while lying about him being dead and that Luke found and rescued him on the second Death Star minutes before its destruction. He could’ve also said the empire’s torture is why he’s disfigured.

I would love to see a video about “if Padme had convinced Anakin to go with her when she went to him on Mustafar, what would Obi Wan have done?” It’s a question I’ve debated for a long time. I doubt they would put him in armor. He would simply wear jedi robes and have a respirator, if for some reason new republic doctors were unable to heal him enough to breath on his own. How much of the Darth Vader suit was actually necessary to keep him alive? I bet the Emperor kept him in it even though there was technology available that could completely heal him. He was probably intentionally kept in a weakened state as the Emperor knew that fully healthy, Vader would be a threat to him.

The only problem with your premise, as interesting it may be, is that Anakin Skywalker returning as a Jedi sealed his fate. He was going to die before Sidious' lighting EVEN hit his control panels as, without the Dark Side, Anakin could not live. Sidious made it so Anakin could not survive in his armored suit without the Dark Side.

Where is that stated? I've never read anything that said he needed the Force AND the suit to stay alive. In Legends, I know he had to use the Force to walk and stuff but that's about the closest to that I've seen

@@RetneysHolocron it's actually in the film, Return of the Jedi. Watch as Luke charges Vader after he taunts him out of hiding by using his discovery of Leia as his sister. Luke's saber never touches Vader at this point, but Vader is clearly having trouble here defending himself because it is his son. He is also already having trouble breathing(you can already hear the raspy breathing at this point and Sidious' lighting has not struck him yet - a sign that Anakin is already back) as Luke is pushing him back towards the elevator. He is conflicted, as Luke said. The Jedi has returned, but without the Dark Side, he succumbed to the injuries he suffered on Mustafar 20 years before.

Well I suppose exile for the rest of his life would be fair enough for Anakin's punishment. Besides one good deed doesn't really make up for a long time worth of wrongs, especially all the killings he's done being Palpatine's damn Vader lapdog.

I think the reality of public sentiment would be similar to Hitler surviving & addressing the Nuremberg Trials as a born again Jew. Anakin would be assassinated, Leia would be thrown out of the Senate & Luke would have been banned from starting a new Jedi Order. After seeing what happened to Anakin, the Jedi would be ostracized from society. They wouldn't take that risk of it happening again. Luke would now be a target as well. Vader shared responsibility for the genocide of entire races, destruction of planets. Be it in this universe or another the capacity to forgive such atrocities is next to none, chosen one or not. Anakin would have been hidden, his mask completely changed to show his face & breathing apparatus. He'd likely serve as a minder to Luke as he started his new order. Leia would never have forgiven him for destroying Alderaan. I did enjoy this though, made me think. I might be too pessimistic on our capacity to forgive, but I doubt it.

If Vader had stood trial, he would have been sentenced to death. A redeemed Anakin would have understood that life is full of choices and he chose poorly. He would understand the only way to bring balance would be to not fight the death penalty. He would understand his fate and use his final days to make amends with his children before being executed. Who knows, maybe his execution would have angered Luke and sent him on a darker path, setting up the sequels. Maybe his death would allow there to be peace in the galaxy. Either way, a truly reformed anakin would have to do the right thing and face justice for being the biggest serial killer in the galaxy.
