I just received the same typewriter last night. I love Smith Corona Typewriters. I own three of them. A 1953, 1955 and now a 1960.

Great video. Thank you. I made an offer for one of these machines in really great shape. And I think I’m pushing that button in a couple of days. At that point, giving my typewriter collecting bug a long rest, with the 6 I’ll have (plus one Brother electronic one, that I’m probably dumping). While it’s not an ultra-portable and I already have a couple of this kind of weight portables, this one has been highly recommended to me by my typewriter tech guy, and of course your video. So, I’m sold.

My favorite typewriter is a 1975 Galaxie Twelve which I got for $20. Funny how Smith-Corona played loose with the names. Yours was also called the Super Sterling. Mine has the key set tabulator above the key board. It is just a great machine

Great production! Really nice job and the Smith Coronas of this era were still well made machines. Nice to know you enjoy using yours!

Excellent video! The less common features you pointed out were very common on most typewriters around that time. I would say the one thing that is unique to Smith-Coronas the PAGE GAUGE to the left of the platen. It'll tell you how far away you were (in inches) from the bottom of the page. No other typewriter brands had that.
@RetraCast4 жыл бұрын
Yeah actually as of now I kinda realize they’re common. The reason I thought of them as unique was because the only other typewriter I had at the time was a 1930’s (or maybe 40’s? I forget) portable smith corona typewriter which had much more basic functionality in comparison. I’m glad you enjoyed the video! compared to where I am now video wise I’ve wanted to redo the video with my updated production, but I’m glad people are still enjoying this.

Because the technology of computers and laptops reside within the very machines, they aren't very attractive. I'm always closing and putting away my laptop as it looks like desk cluter. Here we have a machine of the past, the technology of which is readily visible and looks great on display in any room of a home today. Wonderful review presented with such great prose!

Haha thanks! I agree, it’s why I always have my vintage stuff out on display and ready to go, cuz they just look so good. After I finish my current classic car series I plan on getting back to reviewing vintage stuff, redoing my typewriter video and some film cameras is up first.

I feel like once am older, I would like this much more. I like the idea,I enjoy the look, and i like that it one time thing and no correction. But as 20s old person. I can't. Just in this phrase alone I back space at less 8 times& used autocorrect at least 6. I just don't want the passions or patience for it. The question is am able acquire one then ? If get one now. Would I be able appreciate and keep with next 10- 20 years ?

just to be clear this is a used typewriter correct? i know that’s a stupid question lol! it seems to work perfectly and the ink comes out very dark how i like it! on a scale of 1-10 how much would you recommend buying this product?
@RetraCast4 жыл бұрын
Yeah they are all about used at this point haha. A lot of them still work to this day, you just need to buy a new ink ribbon which can be found on eBay or probably even amazon. They still make those. I don’t use the typewriter nearly as much as I once did, but when I was using it multiple times a week for a couple years I would say I give it a 9. Loved it and it made me write more than I ever would have otherwise. Just make sure you know what you’re getting into if you are spending a good amount on one. Make sure it works and you can first find a new ink ribbon.

Most Smith Coronas use the two inch spool found online at amazon or Walmart for less than $20.

as an aspiring writer, I LOVE the idea of having a typewriter, however, they are selling at a very high price point running at about $200 and I cannot afford one sadly so my Chromebook will have to do :/
@RetraCast4 жыл бұрын
Dang I guess I just haven’t checked the prices in a while. I’ve actually gotten two typewriters for free and the one in the video for $70 plus maybe $30 for shipping? It’s been a while but I remember it being around $100. I would check some antique stores (assuming you’re looking online), since there’s no shipping it’s a bit better of a deal. I’ve been meaning to film some new typewriter stuff coming up so it’s cool to see there’s still interest on this video.
@kennethcox4213 жыл бұрын
I got a similar machine at a yard sale for $25. It needed a new ribbon (amazon) and cleaning, but now it works very well. I have found other brands at yard sales and thrift stores for about the same price. Keep looking. Yours is waiting for you somewhere.
