Subscribe: / bikeituk
This mid 1980’s Retro Raleigh Ventura Road Bicycle with Reynolds 531 tubing came in to the work shop with flat handlebars some surface rust and was in need of a restoration. The group set was all original which was the Shimano Gold Arrow which later became the well known Shimano 105.
The video shows the bicycle being completely stripped down, cleaned repaired then built before being ridden again in all its glory. This Raleigh Ventura 531 is an addition to the many Raleigh Road bike restorations that we have already restored on this channel around the same time period.
The video shows the full bike restoration, including the build and the ride. Plus hints, tips and help with your own projects along the way.
Watch as this Raleigh Bicycle is completely restored to like new condition.
I hope that this video gives you some ideas, help and inspiration in your own projects. If you are new to the channel please have a look around with plenty we have many more Vintage Road Bike restorations and also Bicycle Maintenance videos to help a long the way.
Or why not visit our website for hints, tips and free downloadable vintage bicycle catalogues to give you reference and guidance with your own bicycle restoration.

Hi Andy,great video as usual, would you please give us a talk through of your bar tape wrapping technique,from the top down not up from the bar ends, your method looks far better than cutting an angle then taping the ends on the bar top,would be an interesting video,many thanks!

Hello from the Basque Country! So glad I was subscribed! Just one question. Was it popular for people at the time to buy them with tubular wheels? Mine has tubulars and I wonder if the owner bought if for competition

Thanks for watching and your support. Tubulars were the preferred tyre on more lightweight bicycles. In the mid 80's early 90's many club and race riders would use them. Thanks again and all the best

Hi, I came across your channel over the weekend. I'm 65 and not cycled regularly for many years, but have decided it overdue to get fit! In 1982 I was doing about 32 miles a day, and someone stole my Peugeot bike ... so I ordered a Raleigh Classic 15 tourer, with a 531c 25in frame from the bike shop that was in Bridge Street in Chester. I believe they were hand built by the racing workshop team in Ilkeston? It's been in my garage and shed for a long time! I'm currently in the process of cleaning and stripping it. I'm just enjoying doing it, and your videos have been soo useful and given me inspiration to get back to as it should be. I'm not that far from you just over the border near Flint on the Dee estuary. Thank you again. Cheers!! Iori 😀👍👍

Definitely a touring bike. Rake of the fork and seat tube rear wheel distance says that. I don't ride anymore, too many broken bones over the years (Sydney peak hour traffic) but I still have one of my bikes. A Reynolds 708 frame with Campy Semi Super record grp set and Mavic GP4's. When I lived in London, I used to go for training rides from Earl's Court to Epping Forest and back. That was in 80/81 though :) Good Vid mate.

Hi, I am going to view an old Peugeot Road bike on Monday and it has some rust on the wheels that the owner said will come off, but some of the chrome might be pitted. I am doing it for a restoration hobby and probably won't resell. How do you determine if the bike you buy is past salvaging or if it can be restored for a sensible amount? I don't want to buy one that will cost a fortune to restore or that is past saving. Thanks
@BikeItUK
@BikeItUK 4 жыл бұрын
You can generally tell surface rust to deep penetration rust. Tell and get a bike original as possible. Most components clean up well but locating original parts can sometimes cost as much as the bike cost to buy. Good luck 😉

Another handlebar taping question?!! I appreciate the freedom you are provided by sometimes putting the bars in a vise, but I was curious, since some bikes have cable routing slightly different, what you are doing to allow for different lengths of housing needed. Are you using the old sections as reference for cutting beforehand? I keep imagining some diabolical spreadsheet for different bikes and different housing lengths, but that is just my imagination having "fun" with the idea. From personal experience, I keep thinking about the first time you may have tried the vise, cut the housings and then had a few choice words when you found they weren't quite right. Enjoyable program, as always, Andy!
@BikeItUK
@BikeItUK 4 жыл бұрын
Hi there, ok I use the vice simply for the purpose of filming generally it goes on last right. Yes you are right in general I use the old original cabling for length. Other than that if I don't have the old cables available I measure putting the bars on the frame and being over generous with the length. Once on the Bike I can push the inner back through the outer cable before trimming it off to the desired length. I hope that makes sense. Thanks for watching and your support all the best

I just discovered your channel when this video popped up. Anything Raleigh will peak my interest. My love for Raleigh bikes started back in the 50's when I was a young kid. I know, I'm dating myself here. Back then, if you owned and rode a Raleigh, you were "King of the Road." I remember when riding around on mine and hearing other kids yell out, "look, a Raleigh." Seriously, that's how much a Raleigh bike was revered back then. I could reminisce here, but I don't think it proper to write a book, even a reader's Digest version. I find it very disappointing to see what Raleigh/US bikes are today. No sparkle, painted with cheap drab looking paint jobs. Nothing classy. Raleigh is not the same anymore. How dare they put that time honored Raleigh emblem on the front of those bikes. At least Raleigh in England make a few classic type models. Sorry to rant a bit. Much mahalo!!

Hi Andy, I have a Legnano that I am going to be restoring very soon. Your videos have helped a lot informing me of the technics I should follow. The only thing that has me worried is that I will be replacing all the spokes on the rim and I am not sure if I'm going to be able to make it true. Do you have any advice?

Are you using part worn chains as we all know about the gear jumping issues putting new ones on to old cassettes or blocks. A neat trick is to reverse the worn sprocket if its a totally split up cassette. that can save the day ! Nice bike . 531 .. a good base frame..

All the broken bikes in the neighborhood have a friend in you, Andy, and I like your quip about the best way to cycle is recycle or something like that. And it'd be fun to see, every now and then, you take a vintage frame and match it with your favorite modern components. And I have to say those modern retro builds are some of my favorites as I dig the frames but don't plan to reach down to shift anytime ever again soon. And I love your love for Raleigh and that is quite a story, how the founder had gotten sick in Hong Kong and returned to good health through cycling and out of gratitude turned a local bike shop into Raleigh.

Thanks for your comment and support, the next bike up is a Basso which Im planning full Campagnolo but with the Egro levers which should be more to your liking. @@BikeItUK Thanks, Andy, and I enjoy all of your rebuilds and I am amazed at the attention/skill it takes to return a bike to box-stock beauty, paint and decals and components and all--truly fantastic. But yeah, every now and then, maybe, you could create a hot rod out of a vintage frame and new speed-shop parts. And I saw something like that the other night--a gent was driving a bulbus early '50s convertible, with mag wheels and a cool paint job. Thanks again, Andy, and keep rockin' and crackin'!

@andrewbaxter9395
@andrewbaxter9395 4 жыл бұрын
I’ve just had great success with a seized fork by inverting the bike, emptying a can of gt85 into the fork and topping it up with white spirit to thin it down. I let it soak over night and whilst it still took effort I got the fork off without damage and all the rust and corrosion was wet from the soaking so it did penetrate all the way through 👍

Hi thanks for watching and the support, regarding the paint I just used a chrome touch up paint. However I wish now I would just of taped the forks up and sprayed them completely in the same chrome. Regarding the blue in the end I did not touch the blue up and just left the spots with the Kurust solution on. The blue I really struggled with. Good luck and thanks again for your support
