Retro Review HO Kato C44-9W Locomotive - Southern Pacific SP
In this retro review Dan takes a look at the Kato Kobo Shops HO scale Dash 9-44CW (C44-9W) locomotive he bought in 2016.
This Kato Kobo Shops model came from the factory with an ESU Loksound DCC and sound decoder installed.
Built starting in the 1990s, GE's C44-9Ws had DC traction and 4400 horsepower. SP bought 101 of these units, all delivered in 1994.
Arriving as they did less than two years from the UP-SP merger, many of these locomotives continued in service for their new owner. Eventually they were repainted in Union Pacific colors.
This HO scale diesel has all the hallmarks of a modern diesel - wide cab, ditch lights, and six-axle trucks.
This model train has plenty of pulling power and is loaded with detail.
As usual, after the unboxing, Dan evaluates the model’s packaging, prototype accuracy, paint & detail, and how well it operates and conforms to applicable standards.
