The "Urashima Taro" reference you pointed to at 1:20 is near impossible to localize. He's a character from an old traditional tale about the consequences of time travel. His story is pretty much what happens to the protagonist of Policenauts, being separated from civilization for a long period then finally coming back to find everything changed.

Wouldn't say impossible, but I think it might be hard to find one's that's not going to be too obscure. The Forever War's William Mandella would be what comes to mind for me. It's sci fi and about a spaceman living in a society that moved on. Trouble is, even after the book won a Hugo it's not mainstream famous, sci fi novel's don't get the "it was a film on TV I saw one time" spread the way films will.
@gc3k

It's honestly a recurring theme in most of Kojima's games-- the main character has some memory loss, or emerges from a coma after several years, or is otherwise thrown into a situation he doesn't understand, then the rest of the story is revealed at the end

@danielz.7346

I'd say even with Rip Van Winkle, Urashima Taro is still the most appropriate translation. Joseph Sadaoki Tokugawa, who cites Urashima Taro at 1:20, is Japanese and enormously proud of it (if his computer security system and implied racism per Jonathan and Ed's comments are anything to go by). (Ed would cite Urashima Taro later as well, but considering he's lived for decades on a space station owned by Tokugawa, could have just absorbed the Japanese references along the way.)

I think more than anything I'm just very glad that Snatcher and Policenauts are available in English and that they provide very specific experiences you don't see elsewhere in many other games. Besides the amazing music from both games, they really do provide a clear sense of intriguing beginnings, good build up, and fun/memorable endings. Personally, I actually found the verboseness welcome. Since the expectation going in is that you are going to be reading more of a book than a game, I tend to forgive the slower parts as they make the climactic moments that much more impactful. At the end each game, that great feeling I had walking away from the game is more than enough to make them some of my favourite gaming experiences - even if Policenauts wouldn't necessarily place in a "Top 10 Stories of All Time" list or something similar. Great review, and it's good to hear you liked the OST. Konami Kukeiha Club made some amazing OSTs in their day!

I really love this game, but I've never had a problem with super slow pacing in games as long as I found what they were talking about interesting. A lot of people complained about the same thing in 999 and Virtue's Last Reward but I never had a problem there either. I'd also probably place this game as my favorite Kojima game in terms of story. (Definitely not in terms of gameplay, though I do enjoy the shooting parts) Also Tony Redwood is a great character.

Wow I dont think I've ever disagreed this much with a video of yours,I for one really loved Policenauts for me it's on par with at least Snatcher and the original MGS ,all that you complained about the game being too slow and giving detailed explanations to everything it was something I really liked,for me it really helped me get into the world seeing how technology would be in a space colony was really cool and most of it's opitional anyway,the gun sections are also something I had no problems with which was a big surprise since I hated those sections in Snatcher,I will agree the fanservice is way too over the top and it did got me out of it at times. But more than anything I really love how policenauts is product of it's time I mean it's so 90's an age where Japan was poised to be the world's economic super power,an early post-soviet world where eastern europeans countries were going through really tough times and issues like drug trafikking were taking main stage in peoples minds. It's also a pretty feel good story the one where you just have a smile by the end you know and given how the many of the later metal gear games end this is a nice change of pace,still I can see why it didnt exactly float your boat,now how about Boktai eh

Kojima indeed does have a very verbose way in his writing but, unlike say MGS4, I do not feel that the word count is all that detrimental to Policenauts. It is a visual novel after all is said and done. And as linear as the game is already, I don't think applying scissors to the script would improve its quality all that much. A considerable amount of the text is optional, and to some degree it could be considered "content", I suppose. Even still, I can see where you're coming from, and I can respect that. Prior to Policenauts' fan translation I had been playing a lot of word-heavy visual novels or text games, and it's not for everyone. Some might like the extra world building, some might not, and that's fine.

I feel like this kind of review is in a way foreshadowing what Death Stranding's reception is righ now: a game with a cult following that may not be for everyone, due to its slog of a pace and relatively unsatisfying gameplay, but compelling world-building and story. And if it was under anyone else's direction rather than Kojima, it probably wouldn't be remembered.

"Policnauts would have been forgotten if it was made by anybody else." Indeed. That's what happened when Phantom Pain was announced by MobyDick Studio. Few cared until people heard that it might be a Kojima game. Heck, just imagine if Death Stranding wasn't a Kojima game. It would have just been considered as a artsie hidden gem. But no, people analysed every pixel of the trailer to find... not sure what. But I won't lie, I'm hyped for Death Stranding.

I just finished playing this game, and even though I think it's one of the greatest games I ever played, I do agree that if this were made by another person, it would've been forgotten. And throughout the time I played it, I did acknowledge its flaws, but it didn't stop me from enjoying the game.

I like the number of snarky people who thinks that providing proof that he isn't prefect is going to collapse his fandom. In that sense they put themselves on the level of stupidity inhabited by reviewers who think their bad review will tank the sales of a video game or movie (spoilers: it doesn't). That being said Kojima is the kind of dev that makes games that are unique and crazy. I love hearing people talk about them. He's got that kind of creativity that you just don't see anymore in triple A. I'll probably never play them but I am glad somebody is out there who is at least willing to go nuts.

I'm glad Kojima does things his way. Atleast he offers a unique experience that way. Not everyone may like it or agree with it, but those who do get a really nice experience. I was going to say something about him not just doing some quick cash-grab and always bringing the top product. But then I remebered that he did Ground Zeroes. While it WAS a top product given what it was sent to do, the pricing was horrible. Still, was able to squeeze 15 hours out of it. :p

A good review, with a lot of good points. I think the biggest omission here is that you aren't considering the time this game was made.The gaming scene at the time may have been growing but you didn't really see a hard sci-fi story like this told as genuinely, and in a way that let the gamer think and didn't write them off as probably a little kid waiting for the robots to fight.

Thank God for Slowbeef and Junker HQ for making the fan translation. Good video man. Yeah Policenauts is no masterpiece. It's got a cult following similar to Snatcher, but I feel like neither of those have aged well. I think most of the people in Policenauts cult following are fans of Snatcher and they love the game because it's the closest thing to a Snatcher sequel they'll get.

Snatcher has actually aged tremendously well, surprisingly enough. The gameplay is great, the voice acting is great, and it has some genuinely creepy moments in it that adds to the atmosphere of the game. I would consider it Kojima-san's best game, even better then MGS 1 or 3.

I usually agree with Super BunnyHop. He's well off the mark with this one though. Policenauts is a masterpiece, it's much less frustrating than Snatcher which you have to click on "Look" and "Investigate" in counter intuitive sequences to progress. It ironed out a lot of the design flaws from Snatcher. I love both but Snatcher has many more niggling annoyances than Policenauts. The music and atmosphere is great in Snatcher, but Policenauts is even better in that regard too. As for the babble, yes the game has depth and a plethora of detail for those interested enough to explore. Yet it's not mandatory, you can miss a lot of information if you click on the obvious plot progressing elements, instead of looking around at other objects. I like clicking around as it gives you a real feel for the world you're playing in. You seem to give MGS2 a pass for breaking up the gameplay by forcing you to watch cutscene after cutscene and codec sequence after codec sequence of directionless, convoluted sci-fi babble, but that's okay because it's postmodern? A bit of consistency here please, SuperBunnyHop
@Stokkolm
@Stokkolm 8 жыл бұрын
I can see that some people would be turned off by the exact aspects Super BunnyHop mentioned, but from my point of view Policenenauts delivers everything it sets out to do, if it was made these days there's hardly much that could be improved. All the hard sci-fi technical descriptions really make the game feel more alive and immersive. I really love in the japanese games and animes when after a really tense chapter there a scene where characters are eating lunch and making small talk while mellow piano music is playing, it's so soothing. For Policenauts, when Jonathan is having lunch at Ed house, that was one of my favorite scenes in the game, it's really overwhelming.

Good review sir, but im going to have to disagree on your disappointment in the game. I played snatcher and in comparison to policenauts, has more of a detective / scifi / medical theme goin on, quite frankly policenauts is a better game, of course if you just take the game for what its worth (point and click games) such as broken sword, or even snatcher, its a game of what it is. Its old school what else would you expect? i am greatful i played the game and finished it last night, the game is well done. And it takes you back in the 90s of games were like. For those who love old school classics, and have never played this game, cant knock this one off. Its really a good game! Lots of japanese humor but pass that, this crime solving game is a masterpiece.

I've looked up much about this and Snatcher though never played them, but is interesting is you seemed to find the Kojima elements of this in it's odd manners satisfying in this game. I don't really think the long amount of text is a because of Kojima. This is a Visual Novel, with Novel being part of the word for a reason, most of them are like this. Text adventures too, I've played tons like this, they're basically interactive books. Granted, most of the text is optional in these - you don't need to ask every NPC what everything is.

I like your review for the most part, but I think some of the things that you pointed out are pretty subjective. The verbiage being too descriptive or the dialog having too much information isn’t always a bad thing. Some people like that. I loved the detailed dialogue in Snatcher (a Kojima masterpiece imho). I was only a kid with a Sega CD but that game took me places. Also your other issue is the consequence of being sexually inappropriate. Is it possible to play the game without having to experience that content? In your case, there was a cause for the result. Every example seemed like you had to do something inappropriate to get an inappropriate result. Grand Theft Auto has prostitution, but you don’t have to participate... Also “Death Stranding” is about as close to cinema as it gets (and some), so I’d say he succeeded pretty well in his movie directing goal. Can’t wait to see more from it.

I feel your review of Policenatus was done with a chip on your shoulder. I heard no hype, could care less about Kojima, and really just played it on a whim and thought it was awesome. Kojima and Tarantino are the same... both creating dialogue a character would probably never say. Totally get that point, but I just forgave it and enjoyed the rest.

Im starting to like the idea of the term i think im coining as the kojimaverse, starting with the era of big boss, and solid snake. Then a handfull of decades later in the future, snatcher and policenaughts, then a handfull of decades later zone of the enders and the second runner. It kind of shows what would come of a quick progression of technology in a sifi world rapdily advancing due to the creation of ai and giant mechs the late 20th century to what that would leade too in the mid 21st century and what it would eventually cause in the early 22nd centruy.

I don't know why it seems to be a trope specific to VNs to have overly drawn out, boring explanations of how shit works in its universe. Tsukihime had it, Fate/Stay Night had it, Muv-luv Alternative had it (And how!), and Policenauts had it. There's probably many more examples, I just can't think of any off the top of my head. Its been a few years since I lost interest in the medium.

according to Patrick Boivin, Kojima didn't actually make Policenauts before MGS1, he looked *back* at those "cool anime cutscenes" and made a whole game about them..........................Jesus Christ how can Pat be so wrong? he says all that in the beginning of their episode 1 of Policenauts

Thanks for doing this. Because I follow Slowbeef (er, watch / listen to things involving Slowbeef, not 'tail him wherever he goes' follow) I knew about the fan translation and always had my curiosity piqued but never got round to it. Now I'll think twice before I actually do. Also, 8:30 Jesus H Christ George. It's 'Paddy wagon', not 'Patty wagon'. It's 'Nucular' all over again. And those...okay, those boob things started out as 'pretty damn awkward and uncomfortable' and then the...smacking off a fly for those glorious pre-physics breast physics followed by sexual scream. Squicked a bit.

Cool. Although there's one thing: when you had that spoiler warning, you could write in the video itself when do they end - for people who happen to be watching on mobile devices,without annotations.

I had a blast playing it till 5 AM the first time around in 2010, never did mind all that reading and exploring that much but it can get away a bit when something interesting occurs, and the boob examining element doesn't help investing yourself to the story, I'm not trying to be SJW but I don't really see the point of that, it's so awkward at times it can pull you out of immersion from the story they are willing to tell, but at least it's funny if nothing else, though the pacing needs a bit of work, it's true the game is not for everyone and it hasn't aged as well today, it's more of a curiosity type of game that you wanna check out because it's mostly acknowledged as ''that Kojima'' game not many people had the privilage to play, I say if you're a fan of point and click games, Kojima's work, sci-fi anime or detective stories go check it out, I still like it, and to be honest this game has some of the better aspects than Snatcher

PSP can play any PS1 game if you use custom firmware. Very simple just check a youtube video on how to do that. Then the PS1 game must be in Eboot format to play. There is a program and process to switch ISO's to eboot files but it'm much easier to just go to emuparadise or something and download a pre-made eboot!

at 6:19 didn't he say ( let's try that again / let's try that 1 more time ) ??? I may be wrong but I am glad we even got a translation for the full game so some minor mistakes or no big deal :) ( I just wanted to be sure if that's what he said, again I may be wrong and they translated it right )

Regarding great fan translations/localizations: Mother 3 has easily the best I've ever seen. On a more relevant note, everyone should check out the Retronauts podcast about Policenauts, which has one of the guys (Slowbeef) who helped translate/localize the game on it.

@6:34 "Though I know you're a real Doctor, I want to be your Gynecologist" and it works because the guy is a pretend Cop reliving the glory years. HUGE SPOILER: Not to mention one of the options to oggle and grab, turns out to be his biological daughter from his deceased wife. This might be a feature of the NEC PC-98 as most EVERY game released on the PC platform was extremely lewd, as it was only capable of basic image rendering.

I'd still consider Policenauts a hidden gem, and should be played by people who are curious or love point+click adventure games. The music and atmosphere still holds great up today, with the main theme sending chills down people's spines-Even the people who've only heard it in Metal Gear Solid. You're right though, it isn't a masterpiece. Few games are. The tension of a scene lessens when you don't know what to click on, and that's plenty annoying. I still loved this game, its world, and its characters. Ed's simple but meaningful action in the ending was great. Alright, the fanservice was really weird.
