I helped partially playtest the Saturn translation of Policenauts and my name is in the credits. Just so everyone's clear, Marc is the one who did the bulk of the translation (with Artemio), while Slowbeef was responsible mostly for the technical side of the patch. The Saturn version is particularly impressive because it contains a full glossary of all the game's terms and references, all of which Marc impeccably translated without fail. If you do decide to play Policenauts, make it this version. You should have no problems emulating it.

thanks for your service in getting this out there! i played the PSX translation when it released, and will have to play it on the Saturn next time. here's hoping the script also gets back-ported to the PC-98 version at some point. i feel its visuals are the strongest, but understand entirely why it's lower priority.

Sleeping Cocoon Hah Marc and his team should be thanked, I really didn’t do much. As for the PC-98 version, while it definitely had amazing graphics, it would have to be a complete retranslation because the script and even order of events differ from the other versions. The first time around there are also no Japanese subtitles for the spoken dialogue, so those would have to be programmed in if it’s even possible. So I’m personally doubtful.

I only watched a playthrough of this game translated by the super best friends crew, but I can definitely tell you that it's worth it. As always, Kojima succeeds with creating a fantastic and memorable game with surprises you don't see coming and the english translation by slowbeef made it so much better.

Not all Kojima games were localized and translated for international markets for instance there’s boktai 3 for gba , the only one the series to not have had this treatment.

ImmaLittlePip I don't know if the words "anime" and "small budget" can exist in the same sentence. Not unless the animation is done as cheaply as possible with shoddy 3D. And still, Kojima is expected to have massive earning potential. If you've heard how things work in the entertainment industry it's not that his games have to make a profit, it's that they have to make enough of a profit to interest people in giving him the budget he desires. Then, now that I think about it, we can go into what Kojima thinks his budget should be for a new game under his direction. After all these years while we enjoyed his work we can't pretend that it's impossible for the man to have gotten a massive ego, had he not had one already.

Point & Click is gonna be a hard sell nowadays (and I'm a massive fan of adventure games, growing up with traditional text-based and point & click adventure games back in the day) but I can see Kojima being able to pull off a cinematic/narrative based game like Policenauts more in the style of Quantic Dream/Telltale gameplay, with a bit more depth with whatever Kojima would have as an idea.

Kojima´s Tokimeki Memorial games still aren´t translated but few are complaining. The video even mentions one of them. So not all his directed and produced works have left Japan.

After 6 years of this video's upload, I have played Policenauts for the first time and I let out tears on how much I wanted to play this adventure game. By looking up Adventure Games in Japan, you can easily find Policenauts. Too bad it didn't garner much popularity in the West. My guess is that Policenauts was popular in Japan in 94-96.

Actually you are quite right about his storytelling style back then. It was references, but also that it contained depth, layers, and connected to the narrative. Sometimes it would unveil more to the characters, or the story itself unfolding at every scene. Young Kojima = and present day are still very much the same man. Then and now, his style of unraveling where a story can lead, makes us question everything we do. i would not recommend this - they talk over much of the dialogue and play through it blind. it's hard to stumble through an adventure game, but still, they miss out on some very great moments and easter eggs. it's the kind of playthrough you don't watch for the game itself, like most best friends playthroughs - i'd go as far as to say that being the way you go first with policenauts would kind of ruin it for you.

I actually have played and completed the translated ps1 version on an emulator... Decades old game and it is one of the best games i have ever played. So much ahead of it's time... Especially that bomb defusing part in the end, genius. Snatcher is also pretty good but Policenauts is on par with the Metal Gear series itself. Kojima is a god.

Hideo Kojima only produced Tokimeki Memorial. The games director was Yoshiaki Nagata. Though we did forget about Boktai 3.
