Wow. I actually played this back in 89. Such nostalgia. I haven't seen this artwork in years. Thanks.

4E Anniversary is the Shadowrun system for me. Issues I have with it: I imagine matrix interactions and combat is something every GM will do differently based on the given rules.

4e is perhaps the version of the game I've played least, but had a whole load of fun as a teenage wizard. But I've loved every version.

Cheers mate. It was Shadowrun which got me into the gaming group I've been playing with for around 30 years. We were so heavily into the game that at one point three of us were GM'ing, so we'd all get a chance to play.

I prefer the setting of the first edition. Every other edition of Shadowrun focused on cyberpunk rather than the fantasy elements. The fantasy races and magic feel like they could’ve been explained by cosmic gene spicing and nanotechnology. The first edition of Shadowrun could've easily been an official D&D cyberpunk setting. The same way Spelljammer tackled Star Wars style science fantasy.

I'm not sure I would agree with that. There are plenty of magic which features in later edtions. 2nd Edition was when they were combining the timeline with Earthdawn, so we got things like Harlequins Return where the players head out into the metaplanes. Later than that you've got President Dunkelzahn, and then Ghostwalker and the devastation of Denver as part of the Year of the Comet. After that though, I'd agree. So I think my version would be, that the FASA era was prime time for Magic, and after that it's been sidelined.

Lol. To give credit though, it's a lovely piece of art by Larry Elmore, so I'm not complaining about seeing it on two books.

Where the heck did you get a 1st edition copy in THAT good of a condition?!?!?
@RPGGamer5 жыл бұрын
I got it from Scotch Corner, a toy shop on Newmarket Street in the town of Ayr, back in 1989. They had one shelf of RPG's, and at the time were the only game store anywhere near where I lived at the time, and I picked up my AD&D 2nd Edition Rulebook, and this book, but had to go to Glasgow for everything else. As for the condition, I generally look after my stuff 😀

I still adore the Shadowrun setting, but the rules are almost unrecognisable now, and have changed the tone of the game. Not for the better in my mind though.

1st-3rd editions are the best,i didn't liked when the series lost that Blade Runner/80s Cyberpunk aesthetic. I've been looking for this edition like crazy,found some but the prices are ridiculous.
@RPGGamer5 жыл бұрын
I found 2nd edition increased the difficulty vastly, especially with autofire, which changed the tone of the game quite a bit, since a single opponent suddenly became incredibly dangerous, where you'd needed groups of opponents to take down Shadowrunners before (to use up all their dodge pool, before inflicting damage). But I agree, the original feel of the game was much better, it just felt a bit more grungy and street, rather than the generic futuristic sci-fi it has now.
@anekisamurai64925 жыл бұрын
@@RPGGamer That's why i like the original setting,the 80s Blade Runner/Technomancer style was the best. I agree that the game was made much harder in the 2nd edition,but the harder the more satisfying it was to beat the game. ;^) I love the first two games for the SNES and the Sega Genesis,how i wish they make a sequel for any one of them...in the same retro setting of course.XD

@@anekisamurai6492 Shadowrun Returns for the PC was a definite attempt at a sequel to the SNES game, and I have to say I absolutely adore it, Shadowrun: Dragonfall, and Shadowrun: Hong Kong Chronicles are also absolutely excellent, and feel very 1st Edition to me, as well as being darn good games. My memories of 2nd Edition are great, but my memory of the difficulty level comes from our very first session playing it. Where a single sniper took down the entire team except my Sorcerer Adept, who had to levitate the entire team and fly us out to sea to avoid anyone being killed. Healing times were slowed down in 2e as well, so everyone was walking around for the rest of the adventure carrying wounds. Made us way more cautious when playing.
@anekisamurai64925 жыл бұрын
@@RPGGamer Yes,Returns had Jake Armitage as a NPC that was important. I liked that,but i would've loved to see a mini continuation of what happened to him after the fall of Aneki corp in the first game...hence why my profile is named after the street samurais working for the Aneki corporation. But returns and the expansions are great,i just miss the original FASA developers and BeanSoftware who made Shadowrun for SNES.

@@anekisamurai6492 Genesis Shadowrun is the best video game Shadowrun by far. It's not even close. It's the absolute most faithful to the rules, and has the best randomization and job selections. It was a TRUE open world RPG.

While the decker is plugging into the matrix, why on earth wouldn't their buddies be fighting off waves of goons trying to pop them etc? All I'm saying is it really doesn't have to be everyone sitting around waiting for the decker when it's 'matrix time'.

Oh and ty for the vid, really enjoyed it!
@RPGGamer3 жыл бұрын
Different GM's and groups will handle it different ways, but in my experience with a few groups, the Decking section of the adventure tends to be done before the Run itself. So the decker is sat in his house, searching for background information and whatever he can get from penetrating their computer systems, while everybody else sits around raiding his fridge. I really find this to be a problem in the Pre-5e versions of Shadowrun, and the 1st Edition of Cyberpunk. As soon as both games introduced wireless hacking, and Deckers became more use during the run itself the problem tended to go away.

Haven't played much of it on the Sega, I had a SNES back in the day, and played the hell out of the SNES version, which was equally wonderful. And I can only recommend the newer PC versions (Shadowrun Returns, Dragonfall & Hong Kong), as they're really in line with the old console games.
