One of the things I like about Miyamoto is how hands-off he's been in recent years. Game dev teams look to him for feedback and guidance, but his direct contribution to even the tentpole franchises he created, like Mario, is very little these days. And it's nit really just him, it's a cultural thing at Nintendo -- this tells me that Nintendo is very committed to cultivating institutional knowledge among its staff, so that if a key developer dies or retires, other people can step in and keep the traditions going. Hence why Nintendo properties endure, and still feel like themselves, for decades.

In recent years it's gotten far worse. Whatever the truth is, he remains the luckiest man on earth because he stumbled into the job that gave him a blank check to simply create games based on general childhood thoughts/experiences. Zelda is not unique to him, all kids do that type of exploration, but he had the luck that others made what he requested/demanded.

Interesting comments from former Retro developers (development, audio, design, and engineer directors) in regards to Mr. Miyamoto's comments when play testing a game. That Miyamoto's able to walk in and immediately knows how to tweak a dozen things for the better shows his superb senses of place & feeling. Much of Miyamoto's job today as a Creative Fellow at Nintendo is to go around giving advice and direction like this. That Nintendo retains Miyamoto and other developers from the 1980's is a big reason they've maintained such consistent quality for decades.

The quote "Donkey Kong is my friend" speaks to the principle from Episode #1112, Imaginationland Episode III. As long as the human race is still around, and long after everyone alive today is gone from this world, imaginary characters will have just as much sway over our lives and popular culture than almost any real person ever has. Kyle said as much when he burst into the Pentagon to talk them out of nuking Imaginationland. P.S. Having Donkey Kong blow air with a silly face that contrasted his giant buff strength was probably a better idea than I would've had, which was giving the Gust Bellows from Skyward Sword and Sm4sh an early bird cameo.
@ItApproaches2 жыл бұрын
Theres a reason Miyamoto talks so highly of Retro. He has had personal experience working with them, and helping them. They treated DK with respect and were humble in being open to Miyamoto's thoughts. People seem to be trying to convey Miyamoto as a rude pain in the ass guy, he's not. He just has such passion for the art of video game development that he doesn't let any issues slide. He is quality control. People can cry and say he's lost his way with things like Starfox Zero and Paper Mario, but frankly thats a weak argument. All Starfox Zero needed was abit more content, but sadly Miyamoto's plan was to make Starfox Zero as a reset and act as a test to see if Starfox still had potential rather then making a full sequel. While Paper Mario's situation is that it has infinite possibilities with creative direction so Miyamoto likes to try to find a new fun experience. Sometimes that works sometimes that fails, but people cry that they just want to buy the same game again yet also cry that Nintendo doesn't change. Ultimately Miyamoto is just a man who enjoys his job and tries harder then most, is he strict? Yes, not because he's a jerk, but because he cares so much.
@nicolaswarren34532 жыл бұрын
I agree with you up until your talk of SF:0 and PM. As someone who finished and enjoyed SF:0, there is a lot more wrong with that game than just a drought of content. While that is a factor, poor marketing of the control scheme of the game as well as general fatigue in the fan community and players at large that this was ANOTHER retelling of the same story were also huge parts of why SF:0 flopped, imo. As for Paper Mario, at the risk of sounding like the entitled fanboy I absolutely am, the issue that I take with modern PM is that they have completely changed the identity of the franchise with zero regard for the existing fan base. While from the outside it can be easy to say "you just want Thousand Year Door again", what I at least want is a fun RPG, with turn based battles + action commands, with an engaging story. What I don't want is a comedy adventure game with RPG mechanics stapled on that feel more like an obligation than that any actually passion went into those systems. And let me be crystal clear: I am NOT saying a comedy adventure game staring Mario shouldn't be a thing; I AM saying that it shouldn't where the PM name and take up its budget and development time. Each idea is solid enough for its own series. As far as Miyamoto-san is concerned, I have heard conflicting stories on how far his reach actually extends in either project, but regardless of the truth, I am doubtful he is the ONLY thing wrong with either project and should be respected for who he is and what he has done.

Sumo Wrestlers are also banned from driving cars (i was told). I guess it is a cultural thing for VIP

It really surprised me, knowing what you usually hear about him now days, one would expect them to talk trash about him, I still have a little bit of hate 'cause of what he did to the mario rpgs but you can't deny what he accomplished for the industry

If no one here knows this delicious detail: The first leader behind Metroid Prime, Jeff Spangenberg, was fired. One big reason why: he was BUSTED for using Nintendo's payroll/time to create and host... "explicit" content. So yes! There's dirty stuff out there that was technically (and unintentionally) funded by Nintendo! When Nintendo caught wind of it, Miyamoto (obviously) was NOT pleased. Jeff was immediately let go.

Miyamoto is to game design as Uematsu is to music composition

Well, now that should put the folks that continue blathering hate on Miyamoto in behalf of Retro Studios in a weird spot. He's def not perfect, but you can really trace a lot of fake stories to his relatively small involvement in one really bad Paper Mario game.

Strange to compare Shigeru to Yoda. Considering 2 of the things Yoda taught Luke were wrong. And Yoda died without family and without friends.

I’ll love to ask to the ex retro employee what ever happened to the Original boss that got fired cause I remember he got a ton of well umm inappropriate stuff on a Nintendo computer and Nintendo bought retro and got fired He made the guys game but after that he disappeared he work for acclaim too Btw Metroid almost got canned if they didn’t get the visor samus used to scan the environment and retro almost went under but retro basically became Nintendo new rare working on bigger projects than Rare ever did Metroid and DK and other Nintendo IPs rare never did that yes they help the N64 but after that they went under

Miyamoto sounds like the Gordan Ramsey of gaming: demanding, seeking perfection, but I think the difference is he was probably more polite about it, just very assertive in his own way.

It has been such a ride, growing up, hating hard work, loving entertainment media, thinking it's a better thing for people to focus on, getting crap for it, being told to work hard.. having the 'just work hard and you'll succeed' rug yanked out from under us after doing as we're told.. while entertainment finally gets some respect in society at large.. and then, after so many years of total opacity, getting to peek behind the curtain, having so much connection to current creators, and realizing that everything we loved from the past, that shaped our tastes, was created via slavedriving, people working themselves to death, and going hugely into debt and hoping future syndication/sales would make up for it. unless computers get a lot stronger and a LOT smarter really soon, we're going to have to shift really hard how we do things.
