Pretty generic answer but for me it's Super Mario World. The levels aren't overly long or difficult but are still fun to play.

Totally agree, and I think this is what they got wrong in later 2D Mario games. Was playing the Wii U one and it was always a relief to get to the end of a level. I had no interest in going back and finding alt exits or anything.

I think they designed that game incorrectly. You can pass about 50% of the levels with the cape. Which makes the game too easy.
@RetroFrequency

Super Mario World is my number 1 probably as well. Fun gameplay, map to explore, secrets to discover, it was insane for the time and holds up today with great controls and beautiful graphics. With regards to bypassing levels with the cape, it ties into the same thing about the levels being kinda (but not too) easy. The game let you play how you wanted and still achieve the goal. If a game is too hard it's like forcing a player to play a certain way, and Super Mario World was fun because it didn't do that quite so much. Mario 64 took this even further but wasn't as solid because of its camera and controls.

Tetris is the best example of a perfect game I can think of. The core premise and design are so rock solid that the game has been ported or remade for every platform that can run it. The appeal is timeless and people will never stop playing some version of it. If it were a food it’d be ice cream: adored by all and has different flavours to suit all tastes.
@cattysplat

Ice cream is not universally enjoyed, that's why we have loads of different sweets and eateries try to cater to many as possible, if anything I'd say it's very much a novelty. Not to mention it's frozen temperature causes problems for those with cold sensitivities or just unpleasant to eat in a cold climate. Tetris however is perfect.

A perfect game for me is Bonanza Bros. I can play that game any day of the week, whether I have tons of time or only a few minutes, and I'm guaranteed to have a great time. That is a good pickup. Contra might even be a bit tougher to get at a good price compared to the others. Gunstar Heroes is very good and Shinobi 3 is one of my favorite 16-bit games overall, perhaps even perfect by the criteria in the video. If you haven't played it, you're in for a treat. If you have, you probably know why I said that. And whether you have played it or not, everyone seems to forget you can block in that game. Just a friendly reminder.

When it comes to defining it as games that I enjoy and wouldn't change at all, there are probably too many to list and even more that come close. That said, it's a good subjective framework people can use to help identify what kinds of game they truly enjoy playing the most. I know when I look back at what games I play the most, then filter them through games I wouldn't change, it aligns pretty clearly with what I'd call my favorites. Zelda II, Earthbound, Final Fantasy III (6 I suppose), Super Metroid, Castlevania: SOTN, Super Mario World, Dragon Force, Guilty Gear X, Street Fighter Alpha 2, Gradius II, and dozens more I'll always go back to and wouldn't change a bit.

I've honestly been curious about picking up Banjo Kazooey, never played it, and hardly enjoyed any N64 games. It's also criminal that we never got a sequel to Lords of Thunder, and I heard that Virtual Console sales outsold both Turbo and Sega CD releases in the US, so I guess at least there was an audience on the Wii. Thanks for the video!!
@justbenelson
@justbenelson 6 ай бұрын
I was 16 when Banjo-Kazooie was released and judging by the cover art, it looked like it was a kid's game, something I was trying to avoid. I graduated myself to more mature games Turok: Dinosaur Hunter and GoldenEye 007 and there was no way I was going to go backwards. In 2001, my cousin forcefully loaned me Banjo-Kazooie so that I could beat Tick Tock Woods for him, a task I wasn't excited about doing, but did nonetheless. I ended up starting my own file so that I could get the hang of the gameplay before I made the attempt to start on an advanced stage. To say the least, I was blown away with the gameplay, the humor, the graphics, the level themes...the entire presentation! I beat the entire game in one weekend, and every now and then I'll pop it in and play it through. It's one of those games that is fun to play during certain seasons of the year (assuming you live somewhere where seasons actually change like it does for me in Minnesota). Mad Monster Mansion has the best Halloween vibes. Freezeezy Peak is just so jolly and puts you in the Christmas spirit. However, while it's not terrible, Rusty Bucket Bay is a redundant level, in my mind. It feels kind of like a recycled idea from Clanker's Cavern with a rusty, oily, dingy atmosphere. Yes, Clanker's Cavern is more of an aquatic level, but considering the rest of the levels in the game and the extreme themes of each one, Rusty Bucket Bay and Clanker's Cavern just seem too similar to one another. Still, it doesn't diminish my love for this game!
@cattysplat
@cattysplat 6 ай бұрын
Rusty bucket bay steps up the difficulty quite significantly. A lot more backtracking with switches and tight platforming. The real crown in BK IMO is the hub world which is a metroidvania level all of it's own, unlocking more with each completely zone and ability unlock.

I could go on and on with retro games I think are perfect like Mega Man X4, DKC 2, Rocket Knight, Ganbare Goemon 2 on SFC, Ape Escape, etc. But I think there's way less modern games we consider "perfect," and the one I really want ppl to go back and complete is Ratchet and Clank Future: A Crack in Time. It is jam packed to the gills full of fun in every corner of the game, the fun factor rivals that of 1st party Nintendo games. You can get lost on the overworld maps/galaxies for hours. Then when u finally get to a main planet, you truly see how huge the game is. Plus all the weapon customization, the skill points and unlockables, you can even change the bolts to be something else like coins. It's so confusing why Insomniac has not made a Ratchet and Clank game since that even comes close to A Crack in Time.

Ive been thinking of this question for a long time, my friend sent me this video. For me, personal perfect games are not as interesting as objectively perfect, though that is much harder to measure. You touched on a lot of key points, usually ambitious games are not perfect. Most modern games are far more ambitious in scope. And the two part question: DID it accomplish what it SET out to do? I can think of plenty of games that are 9/10 even high 9's out of ten. The only objectively perfect game I can think of: Got it all right in one try is original Tetris for the NES

@@stevenewsome5306 in the NES games and Bloodlines the subweapons are critical, whereas in SCIV the only one that makes much of a difference is the cross, as the whip is already OP. And when powered up with the double or triple shot, it makes most of the bosses a joke. The instant death spikes are for the most part a minor annoyance, but they go crazy with them in stage 8. Even in Castlevania 3 most of the spikes wouldn't kill you instantly, they'd just do a ton of damage. It just feels cheap. Otherwise it's still one of the greatest videogames of all time, and my personal favourite in the series. It's just a few strikes away from being perfect.

I like contra, but Metal slug is a cut above, period. So freakin satisfying and the attention to small details is truly incredible. 110 percent a perfect game.

If a game has flaws, it's not perfect. How come the internet always has to completely misuse words and make them lose all meaning? Just so they can get a few more clicks? Now whenever you call a game "perfect" it's not gonna mean anything to anyone anymore.

I can understand your frustration, but I actually think we agree. There are certain games that I don't think there is anything wrong with (including the ones I talked about in this video). Those game are perfect to me :)

Banjo-Kazooie was a game I never played I didn't knew about, the first time I saw something about it I received a poster from it on a mistery box, I thought it was irrelevant, I didn't like it or had any afinity to it. Later I got one of those consoles with lots of games and I tried it, at first I was like, the controls are a bit klunky, then you start discovering the diferent things you can do with him and the bird, then I was unraveling dozens of different things in the game and I was amazed, suddenly I realized I was hooked and this game was not also easy to play as it was amazing, I mean AMAZING! I never felt like that since I played Super Mario, Zelda, or other great old games, and now I'm a fan of Banjo-Kazooie, it's an AMAZING game, 100%, it should be taught in classes of how to make video-games, programmers should learn from it before making a video-game, and if I have a son the first game I will show him to play will be Banjo-Kazooie. The funny thing was that I only discovered this game when I was trying to show some inocent, non-violent, games for my nieces to play and instead of them playing I was the one hooked and playing it all the time! A true gem! The guys who made it should be in the History books of Oscars for video-games, it's clearly like that saying "don't judge a book by it's cover", Banjo-Kazooie is that line completely! And it's not just the way it plays, or the puzzles or levels or platforms, it's the sound, the music, the characters, the designs, it's trully brilliant!

Also that part in Metal Gear Solid in the last place where you had to melt a key by leaning up against a wall in a hot room for a while. or the codec you had to call from the back of the game case to progress in the game.

8:30 oh I just want to say, after three years of on and off playing it, I finally beat that game a few weeks ago. Very happy to have done that, really I think the first bajo game did it best (except for rusty bucket bay, for some reason I just absolutely hate that level in particular) and it hasnt really been matched since. It hit the perfect balance of size when it comes to levels, and the levels themselves are excellently designed.

5 games I find perfect: 1) Kingdom Hearts 2. The first one started it, sure but having to use L2 and R2 for camera controls makes it hard to go back to the original PS2 copy, but 2 has a more "modern" feel. 2) Mega Man 2. Not too hard, not too easy, not too slow not too fast, great power metal chip tunes, what's not to like? 3) F-Zero on SNES. 0 loading, no cinematic nonsense, just hit start, pick a car, pick a league, you're racing within like 3 seconds. 4) Super Mario World. I'm biased on this pick because its the very first video game I ever played and beat and thus started my entire gaming life. 5) gotta go with Halo 2, for similar reasons to Super Mario World; it was the first game I played and beat with someone else, opening my eyes to co-op play. At the time, Mario World was the only 2p game I've played, but it wasn't simultaneous gameplay like Halo, you swapped turns.

This has inspired me to play Banjo-Kazooie for the first time. I just checked it out on Nintendo Switch Online - Nintendo 64 and that was quite the entertaining intro. It was just what I needed after beating Shinobi III and cheesing the heck out of some save states and rewind features on the later stages. Haha.

Tobal No.1 - no other game makes me instantly happy to play it. You can play the tournament mode over and over again, and if you get bored of that you can go into the quest mode's monster infested dungeons to beat your best times, or try to beat the last dungeon with 30 floors. There's no save function, which makes the dungeons exciting. And after getting yours whooped you can go into the practise mode for a palate cleanser checking out all the throwbreak windows. And then get back into the tournament mode again for one more run. Then load up the OST and listen to that while you take a break from pressing buttons. Perfect.

For me two perfect games are Majora’s Mask on the N64 and Pokemon Black/White 2. I was obsessed with MM growing up but I wasn’t around for the N64s life-cycle so all I could do was dream, I finally got to play it for the first time on emulator and I loved it. I somehow still don’t own a north american copy but I did get my parents to buy me the Japanese version online years ago and I played through the whole thing on my brothers old N64. As for Pokémon, White 2 was the first Pokémon game I ever played and I’m so grateful that my dad took me to gamestop to buy a copy while they were still selling them new. Sadly I don’t have my og cartridge anymore but I do have my original box and some of my og Pokemon on later games.
