NES developers: We cannot let these people beat our game Modern developers: We have to be careful to make sure _everyone_ "beats" our game

Haha that's somewhat true. Modern games while they hold your hand, you'll have to look up youtube a lot for these stupid puzzles & sometimes figure out where to go from point A -B.
@PowerSynopsis9 ай бұрын
@@tonyp9313 That's what I'm saying. In the 80s you had to work to see the end of a game. Now, you have to work to see the "real" end of a game. Whether you're the type to look up guides has a lot to do with what generation you were from OR how much time you're willing to sink into a game's story, as almost all time sinks these days have to do with narrative. I'm not against this at all. I love reading. I love stories. I love the fine motor challenges that video games present, I love spending time on media I find worthwhile.

@@tonyp9313 I think I overanalyzed what your original comment said with my reply. You're absolutely right that I had to look up what the solution to a puzzle was in a modern game. I've been there when you get the answer and you're like: "How tf was I supposed to know _THAT_?"

If it couldn't be beat after an hour or so of trying then I'd watch a superplay of the boss. It's good to at least give it X number of tries before looking to emulate someone else's performance and look for tips in a guide. If you just trace a playthrough video or strategy guide without attempting to your best ability beforehand, that's on the same level as constant autosave. Constant (think every 1 to 5 minutes or so) autosave destroys any possible tension or desire to keep your character alive because there are no real consequences. I grew up on atari and NES and DOS 5.25inch floppy IBM PC in the 90s (we had little money for entertainment) so I have no sympathy for people who've grown up on this side of 2000 where autosave is an expectation not a privilege.

One of the most pleasant surprises I had recently was when bemoaning the loss of renting a nintendo game for a weekend, a posting pal replied that libraries often stock video games! Yay, I just borrowed a ninja jajamaru collection for switch.

Really? I thought it was carried on from the trend of making coin-op arcade games difficult so they could eat more coins from players.

First thought: sim ant for SNES -that save time, and weirdness. Deeper thought: Wario's woods. This one sucks me in, then knocks me down. Early levels feel like a running start before you try to kick the football that the game moves on you

Speaking of dreamcast - try out Crazy Taxi's Crazy Box mode. Also Fighting Force 2 comes to mind especially nuclear missile warehouses, where every bullet or explosion can set you back 20 minutes to checkpoint, and enemies are.. armed with m16 and grenades lol

First time seeing someone massage an NES game, and will probably be the last. If a game gives you infinite continues, no matter how difficult the game is, I consider it far. NG1 is the hardest IMO but because you have infinite continues, it's doable with enough practice. NG3 is the easiest but because you only have 5 continues, (on top of removing checkpoints and taking more damage compared to the JP version) it makes it the hardest IMO.

Lolo. It’s a fun puzzle game but no matter how many attempts there are levels I cannot beat. Same for Winback. My brother and I spent days trying to beat one the later stages in the regular difficulty and the length and enemies make it a grind we never succeeded in winning.

the mass effect trilogy happens to be some of my favorite games of all time. they are a bit of a time commitment, but once you get a feel for them they are an incredibly rewarding experience. games that hate me tend to be the ones i've invested time into, maybe finished 30-50% of them, but can never seem to commit long enough to finish them. one example that comes to mind is Zelda II: The Adventure of Link.

Wow! I just beat RDR2 earlier this week. That game hates me for real. I was tracking the legendary wolf, and the last clue spawned 2 of them - one being behind me.

Your gameplay and comedy were top tier on this one to me. I don't own Okami, but it's been on my radar forever. After I beat The Messenger, I felt like i could beat anything. I beat The Last Faith today. I say that because maybe my console hates me. Haha. That game and MythForce both had a fair share of crashes on the Switch. Both of those games get a little hate regardless of the platform. I enjoyed both of them. I'll be looking at a PC or PS in the future, but i still love Nintendo.

I also only own games I like. Don't see too many people owning hundreds of records or movies they can't enjoy.

That's why when I got back into retro gaming I made sure to get a Game Genie for my NES games since so many don't have saves or stage codes.

Lately any older turn based rpgs with random encounters. I’m spoiled with newer rpgs where you can see on screen enemies, but there’s nothing worse when trying to figure out a maze or puzzle, every 7 steps you run into a battle then after a hour or more in a dungeon to get a random incounter that wipes you’re entire team due to some crappy RNG with a insta death spell.

Great vid as always, I can definitely think of a few games that hate me lol. First off, Rocket Knight Adventures. It's great, I just find it a bit tough to get through. To my list I'd also add the Contra, Zelda, Castlevania, and the Souls series of games, all of them are great...I just generally can't find the time to get theough them. Oh yeah, Okami and the Mass Effect trilogy are both awesome and worth making time for.

Hollow Knight hated me for a long time. I can now proudly say that it still hates me, but I've finally beaten it. I can now continue my journey to be perpetually despised by metroidvanias.
@bananonymouslastname56939 ай бұрын
Hollow Knight is tricky. It acts all nice like it loves you. It lets you explore and learn its secrets, and then it invites you to come over to its place for something more intimate... and next thing you know, you're in Godhome staring down the Pantheon of Hallownest, trying to convince yourself that over 40 bosses in a row with no checkpoints is perfectly normal and not completely abusive. On one hand, there were definitely some endorphins from finishing it and getting the platinum trophy. On the other, you see that less than 2% of players have done it, so no, it wasnot normal. It was not fair. You just loved it more than it loved you.

@@bananonymouslastname5693 Still haven't beaten the Radiance, the last set in the Colosseum, or the Pantheon, but the game has stoked that love / hate relationship so powerfully that I think I am probably going to go back and do all of them ... such a good game
@bananonymouslastname56939 ай бұрын
@@asimplenameichose151 It's definitely an all-time great game. I don't regret taking the time to do it all, though Godhome seems like it's probably pretty unfair for most folks. I have to admit, though, that finally beating Absolute Radiance was one of the most satisfying, cathartic moments I've had in modern gaming, like getting a 1cc on a difficult shooter or Ghosts n Goblins. It's ruthless, but when you do manage to do it, it's a rush. Plus, I got to lord it over my 23 and 17 year old nephews who also love Hollow Knight that their 43 year old uncle still can wreck a game before them.

Just wanted to say thank you and God bless you for what you do. Love your goofy humor. Also, I'm the exact same way with Yoshi's Island. I think it has something to do with the design of the end of level screen. Really irks me if I don't get everything. Anyhow, thanks and I wish you and yours the best.
