I was so focused on criticizing Timmy that I forgot to mention the solution to names being written on your games. If it's on a plastic surface, using a magic eraser or rubbing alcohol should take it right off. If it's on the label of a game, there's really not much you can do without damaging the label of the game in the process unfortunately.

If the label is really glossy, a dry erase marker works great. If it's a cheap paper label then yeah, there's not much you can do.

Sometimes I leave stickers on my games when they're from video rental stores that no longer exist. It shows the history of the game and I think that's kind of cool. As long as those stickers aren't on the art work.

Not sure if you can make a video of this but how about things you’ve found in old/retro games that you’ve bought… I bought my Klonoa 2 on the PS 2 preowned and it had a drawing of Klonoa from a child (obviously) ..it was so endearing I actually just kept it. They probably drew it while their brother or sister or parents were playing the game. 😇

Many people that live in an urban environment often have pawn shops in their area. If you have a bunch of your stuff stolen and your name or initials are written all over your stuff chances are you can get your stuff back. Our local PD will call you and let you pick stuff up from the pawnshop that was stolen from you if you can prove it’s yours, you have to pay what the pawnshop gave the thief but if it’s important to you it might be worth it. That is why people put their names on media.

Dude, before the video even started I was screaming STICKERS!!! So funny that that was your first topic. One thing that drives me nuts is people not taking care of their games. This could include storing them incorrectly, tearing the original sticker off or just pulling up the corners, and throwing them around so they get scuffed. My biggest self inflicted wounds are exactly what you said, selling a game you wish you hadn't. So frustrating. Love the video and I'm on the screw Timmy train. Stop writing on games people.

Big tip for cigarette smoke damage is to put whatever you have in a 90-99% rubbing alcohol bath. I'd recommend covering up any stickers to be safe, but I did this to computer components (including fans) that had caked on tobacco. It worked like a charm & my parents are now using that system (for the past several years) & were all non-smokers with quite the sniffers.

Used car companies and home rental places use ozone to clear that nastiness. Ozone actually neutralizes not just covers the stank link dryer sheets. Great episode. I've been collecting seriously for over 20 years now so this one hit home for me. 1. I've used WD-40 for years but I hear it's not the best thing to use as it's acid based and will slowly eat away whatever you put it on. 2. 1:47 Annnnd this is why I buy sealed games. I got tired of people's BS on ebay. Mint should mean mint or at least near mint. Some of the "mint" games I bought in the past looked like they were used as hockey pucks. 3. Agreed, please stay away from those cheap Disc Doctor clones. Just pay the $3 or whatever it costs to resurface the disc. It's well worth it. 4. Sega Saturn and long box PS1 jewel cases are exactly the same so that makes it easier to swap them out. There's even reproduction cases now so if you are not picky those are the ones to get. 5. Screw you Timmy.
@RetroBirdGaming
@RetroBirdGaming 4 жыл бұрын
That's interesting you heard WD-40 slowly eats away at stuff. Have you noticed that at all on anything you've used it on? I feel like so long as you clean it off quickly enough after using it then it should be all right. Also, yes the PS1 and Saturn long cases are the same but if I remember correctly the Sega CD ones are EVER so slightly different. I thought I remember trying to swap it with a Saturn case at some point and something was slightly off.

@@RetroBirdGaming No, I haven't noticed anything long term but it does take some of the artwork off of a disc if you use it too much. Right, the Sega CD cases have a smaller hole so they won't work.

What irks me the most is when big retailers such as GameStop go out of their way to slide the cover art out of the DVD case and splat their big yellow price sticker on the spine directly on the paper. They slide the cover art back under the plastic and now their precious price sticker is "protected". But they ring up with the barcode, which queries an electronic database that only they have control over, so people really can't fake new price tags without being able to modify your inventory database. If you're worried about an employee doing that, well putting the price tag under the plastic, directly on the cover art ain't even a speed bump for them. If your store doesn't use barcodes and you just want to prevent tampering, well these darn stickers make such a scene coming off that evidence of tampering would be pretty obvious. Fortunately these spine stickers generally peel off the paper without too much trouble compared to the ones on the case itself, probably because they're subject to a whole lot less oxygen over long periods of time, but I would rather deal with the hassle of removing adhesive from plastic than subjecting unnecessary risk to damaging the cover art.

Oh yeah, for sure. That's just horrible. Especially when you think the sticker is on the outside at first.

Those old cardboard boxes being all damaged or just plain missing and then ending up with loose cartridges. Most annoying thing ever. You've got a bunch of shelved nicely packaged CD based games with the manual and all the papers included, and then just a bin of shitty damaged loose cartridges. Like come on! Then you go online and find like 90% of the copies being sold are all loose (but for a reasonable price like $10-$20). So you go "cib" and the price is $500. Oof.

Stickers or writing on the game/instruction book/box was always the worse when buying a preowned game. I don't know if it's because I'm OCD, but the thing that bothers me the most, is the fact that DS, 3DS, VITA, Wii, Wii U and Switch boxes has holes in the hard plastic case, which makes the label being pushed in, leaving a light mark when just holding the case in the wrong places. It happens so often, sealed or not. I'm wondering if I'm the only one noticing that.

I can't stand ANY imperfections on the spine of a game's box art. I think it's because that's the part that's always facing outward on the shelf. A creased spine drives me nuts o_O Also, sidenote on jewel cases: there are variations. For example, Japanese Saturn cases say "Compact Disc Digital Audio" in a little rectangle on the inside, while Dreamcast cases just have an empty rectangle.

I’m guilty of writing my name on game carts in Sharpie. Not ALL of them, but the older ones. The reason is that when I bought those, I was living in an Army barracks and didn’t want my games to “walk away”. Now when I look through my collection, it helps me remember when/where I bought a game. If it had my last name, I’ve had it for years and got it in the army. If it doesn’t, it’s a more recent purchase. When someone gets angry at me for writing my name on my games, it’ll be when they pick them up at an estate sale…and I won’t be around to give a damn about that.

Two things... If your games smell of cigarette smoke. Put them in a box with a open box of baking soda for a month or so and the smoke smell will be gone. When my brother died I got his NES and SNES and they reaked of smoke. I put a baking soda fridge mate in the cabinet next to them and the smell was gone in about a month. Second, I am annoyed by collectors that don't try and clean up their collection. They actually like the stickers or kids names on the games because they like the life "journey" the game has had. Who owned it, where it came from, was it a rental. Ect, ect... Lame, come on...
@ShinSynZero

Yeah, I'm a month late to commenting on this, but hey it's new to me 😅. Soooo many things I agree w/here. Games that smell like smoke has to be the worst. It takes weeks for dryer sheets to their thing and like you said it only changes the smell. Stickers suck (I'll give the WD40 trick a go) and so do the break if you breath on them Sega/Sony long boxes, but least those can be replaced. Something else that's annoying are broken hang tabs on Genesis cases, I have nonidwa why people did this to their cases. Your last point about starting earlier...everytime I look at historical prices on Pricecharting is like a gut punch. Especially when I consider the fact that I never got rid of my classic stuff but didn't start get back into actively collecting for retro platforms until a few years ago.

The hang tabs breaking off is another good point. Maybe people feel like their only purpose was to hang on hooks at the store? Definitely bothers me when I see those broken off. Especially since it's not as easy to swap those cases since there are variants (for example, Konami has their own ones).

Writing a name on a game I think was more of a way to know who a game belongs/belonged to. If you ever lent a game to a friend or a friend borrowed a game back in the day if your name was written on it, it was pretty obvious who it should go home with when you saw it in their collection. Rubbing alcohol works great to clean it, but I completely agree that if its on the label your most likely out of luck. I have had a few SNES carts where I was able to clean it off with a small amount of rubbing alcohol on the front label. If it was on the back label, no go. If it was a valuable game in your collection with this you were better off unscrewing and swapping the backplates unless the plastics were different shades.

Ever have a sticker cause permanent damage to even a plastic case? I've encountered this a bunch of times with DVD keep cases (e.g., GameCube). It's usually fine if you get the sticker off as soon as you buy the game, but if it has been on for a while, it seems that the sticker bonds too tightly with the surface and then shrinks slightly or something. Whatever the case, you end up with a warped plastic layer, with a sort of pinched/stretched outline of the sticker. Dishonourable mention to game companies who make cheap, "eco-friendly" packaging (esp. cardboard), which is flimsy and disposable, and probably ends up in a landfill 75% of the time. Meanwhile, countless sturdy full-size cases are still sitting on our shelves, decades later, causing no harm to anyone or anything.

There's a few games that it pains me remembering missing out on a deal. The worst had to have been Shining the Holy Ark for Sega Saturn. I saw it on Ebay for $120. This was back when it regularly sold for $200 (the good old days) so I knew there was a very good chance I'd never see it for that price again. Thing was I didn't have the money for it until payday at the end of the week. I'm checking around the clock all week making sure it's still there. Thursday night into Friday morning I've got my phone with my online bank account in one hand and my other is on the mouse of my computer just refreshing both over and over like a crazy person. The literal second I saw my bank balance increased I hit BUY NOW on Ebay only to be instantly told someone else beat me to it. I still wake up in the middle of the night screaming: "WHY, GOD?! WHY?!"

Unfortunately most of us didn’t take good care of our stuff back then. I do commend SEGA for using those sturdy plastic cases for a long time. Those were cool. When I was a kid, rental movies had similar cases. So it felt more grown up somehow. Hard to explain. I used to be picky, but if the price difference is huge simply over a manual or something, nope. I will buy the Timmy version for ten bucks over the complete one for $80. I am more interested in playing these than collecting. It’s like buying an art print. I will never own a Van Gogh. But I can buy a reasonable copy for cheap? I’m gonna.

I'm pretty sure those cases Sega used went into their branding strategy of feeling "more mature".

One thing I've learned as a collector is that westerner gamers generally don't take very good care of their stuff. The condition of some games (especially disc media) can be horrendous. If you ever get a chance to see Japanese game collections they are usually in remarkable condition. A lot of retro game shops in Japan have condition ratings labeled right on their stock which I find are at incredibly high standards.

It’s not the collectors, it’s the kids. Many American kids don’t treat their property with respect. My own daughter leaves her toys scattered around and parts get broken or go missing. It’s a societal norm in America and very hard to teach your kid otherwise because their friends do it too.

Not really a “collecting” pet peeve but just something that comes with the territory of old hardware that I hate is when games freeze. Clean game goes into a clean system and I’m playing for a while and then BOOM! The game freezes and I’m screwed. Does that ever happen to you?
@RetroBirdGaming

That doesn't really happen to me, no. Only time I've ever seen that is if you bump or knock the console.

I love names on the cartridge, I got mine on my NES games still. We put names on them for borrowing purposes. When I beat their high scores I'm like, "HAHAHA SCREW YOU TIMMY YOU SUCK!!". Same with Rental store stickers, I enjoy those, price stickers can go though. Dirty games/consoles off ebay, dust your shit people, wipe it with a dirty sock, I don't care! Also, fingerprints... I got a nice set of Sega Saturn games, everything looked nice but jeez they made sure they touched every surface of the disc.

That should be added to the list of pet peeves. People who don't handle their discs by the sides and instead touch the flat surfaces getting a whole bunch of fingerprints on it. Also, great job on showing Timmy who's boss!

Things I find annoying: Games without a case and manual when they came with a plastic case. I'm sorry, no. I can forgive tossing cardboard boxes, but when the game came in a hard plastic case, how did you lose that? Am I the only person who actually would buy crappy sports games for a quarter just for a replacement game case? People who charge ebay prices in person. Listen, I get it, you want as much as you can get, but if I wanted to pay ebay price, I'd just go buy on ebay. There's a pawn shop near me that has none of their games priced, and when you go to buy one he pulls up ebay. The instant he did that to me, I walked out. Hard no. The Nintendo Tax. It doesn't matter what game it is, it seems, if it's on a Nintendo console, the price is doubled. Look at stuff like Gauntlet Dark Legacy. Price on PS2/Xbox: $10-15 complete. Gamecube? $50 loose. Why?! Honestly, due to current game prices, I've just gotten into collecting everdrives and ODEs, because things are just getting ridiculous.

Stickers are the STDs of retro game collecting. Scratches are the battered women who were poorly treated. Cracked are like torn or ripped clothes: replaceable. I'm a smoker but I don't smoke inside cause that smoke sticks and stinks. Try baking soda for the cigarette smell. Names on games are like tattoos of past lovers... A MISTAKE.
