The reason Dempsey was inactive for three years is because he had a huge falling out with his manager, Doc Kearns. Kearns was contractually obligated to get 50% of Dempsey's fight purses (standard back then), and it was an ironclad deal that Dempsey would have to follow. Which means he'd have to give half his money to a guy he wasn't even working with anymore. Their fighter/manager contract didn't expire until September 1st, 1926. As a result, Dempsey had to wait until after that date for his next title defense, which kept him out of the ring for three years, and also cost him his fight with Harry Wills, which they had signed a contract to fight in 1924. They were trying to get the investers together for the fight when Kearns & Dempsey had their big blowout, over Kearns immense hatred of Dempsey's wife Estelle Taylor, and her hated of him. Dempsey finally had to choose, and of course he chose his wife. That loss of his manager caused all those problems that now hurt his legacy, because modern day stat-obsessed fans just look at his record, and don't dig further to find out what actually went down. Dempsey wasn't going to risk the biggest title in the world and be forced to give half the money to someone who he was no longer with. But that is how those contracts were back then- they totally favored the manager and screwed the fighter.

Dempsey's fights became rather infrequent after he won the title and I really doubt his shrewd managers would have let him fight someone as dangerous as Johnson unless there was some serious money involved.

His managers and promoters wouldn't have let a black fighter face Dempsey under any circumstance after Johnson's reign a few years earlier. Dempsey almost fought black slugger Harry Wills but due to the color line among other issues it never did. I think Wills was a fight Dempsey could have won because he came right at you as opposed to the crafty Johnson even at 43.

Given the 17 year age gap (same as that between Tyson and Holmes in 1988), and given that Willard had easily taken out Johnson and then Dempsey had easily taken out Willard, a Dempsey win wouldn't be surprising here. More interesting would have been a bout between both in their primes. In that case it's hard to imagine Johnson not winning. It probably would have been a bit like Foreman vs. Frazier, with the bigger and stronger man who also had phenomenal grappling and tie-up skills quickly wearing down and then vanquishing the smaller, 'smokin' fighter.

Johnsons main defense was to get opponents into a clinch because of his often superior upper body strength however Dempsey would probably use that to land body shots and break out of most clinch situations, Dempsey was a defensive master himself, as inventor of the bob and weave style which relies on dodging and tactical footwork. Would be a good match, but can't see Jack winning in most scenarios.

This story sounds like Bullsh*t - Dempsey was already the Champion and a wealthy man. Dempsey respected Jack Johnson, but there was no money for Dempsey in fighting an over-the-hill Jack Johnson. The most dangerous black challenger at that time was Harry Wills and Dempsey was supposed to fight Wills, but the Promoter's Check bounced and the fight was cancelled.

Stylewise, Jack D had better footwork, and far superior punching technique and use of combos. Jack J was probably stronger, and may have had better stamina. Both had a good defense (JJ using clinches and JD's bob and weave) though I think JD has the edge due to his ability to land body shots in clinches thus making JJ's defense backfire, and JD was simply a far more technical boxer, and had a "new" explosive punching style that was unseen in Johnsons era.

I had read a book on Dempsey, and their is no mention in this book that Dempsey had a private fight with Johnson. I did read that Joe Jeanrette tried to get a fight with Dempsey, before Dempsey became champ.

Well done retro boxing!! I’m glad that you’re a true boxing historian and like to study the original iconic super stars of the sport from the early beginning. We’re talking about the legendary boxers such as; Jack Johnson and Jack Dempsey and even before there time going back even further to the likes of John L Sullivan in the mid 1880’s who was also really popular in his day. However this video has some really interesting information and holds some excellent parts of boxing history In which I wasn’t aware of up until I seen this video. It’s always good to add to your boxing knowledge as you can learn something new everyday. More so this is definitely a subject that I will strongly study myself in the near future as I find the old school boxers fascinating due to their life stories and experiences that they have gone through. They have been through so many obstacles and events in there life time because of the times they were in which makes there life that more interesting. Most of them have got versatile and exciting personality’s to go with there life story’s making them all unique and different in their own ways. Last but not least I have always wondered what it would of been like if those two ever fought in the ring, and I have always wondered why they didn’t end up fighting in the ring as they were both practically in the same era. This situation has always bothered me and intrigued me a lot but I haven’t ever got round to putting in my time and effort into studying what actually went on. It has always had me thinking but now I have a base on where to start from due to your video which has helped a lot. Lastly I just want to say thank you for uploading this video as it was really interesting to hear, and also hearing your aspects on things which made it a good quality presentation. Dempsey is one of my all time favorite fighters and during his prime he destroyed people in the ring. People who in some cases were MUCH bigger than he was. It's possible for Dempsey to have been known by many names. Many will balk at him being called the 'Utah Mauler', saying "That has to be someone else, Jack was known as the 'Manasa Mauler'". What they don't realize is that Jack Dempsey did spend time in Utah during childhood and early adulthood. 7 of his first 9 pro fights took place in Utah, 8 of his first 9 if you count Pocatello, Idaho, which is practically part of Utah, being a little less than an hour north of the border. Anyway, my point is that perhaps him being called 'Utah Mauler' isn't so far fetched. 'Manasa Mauler' sounds much cooler though.

Jeffries was old when he faced Johnson but in the train ride after the fight the press appologize for bringing out of retirement and said if he were younger... Jeffries just stopped them there and said Boy's not even in my best day would I have been able to take this guy. And as far as Willard goes, that fight was a tragic set up for Johnson. Jack Johnson was trully the greatest pound for pound fighter of all time. RIP JJ.

It might have been interesting for a few rounds, have read than Angel Firpo used Johnson as a sparring partner before he fought Dempsey. He made Firpo look silly and wasn't asked back. But Dempsey's pressure would have worn Johnson down as his age would catch up with him. Johnson at his peak would caused Dempsey all sort of problems, Dempsey always had trouble with clever boxers like Tommy Gibbons and Tunney and Johnson was excellent at avoiding clean punches and tying fighters up.

Had Dempsey fought Johnson around 1919 -- Dempsey was very active and at his peak the year he destroyed Jess Willard -- he would have beaten him. He would have beaten Johnson in 1921. If they fought prime for prime Johnson would have won. Tunney was a master boxer and beat Dempsey easily in 2 fights that only went 10 rounds. Tunney said in 15 round fights he would have knocked Dempsey out. He had Dempsey close to a knockout in both fights. Johnson was also a master boxer. He had a complete game like Tunney and was bigger and stronger.

@@MrRoccoMarchegiano Norfolk didn't deserve a shot at the heavyweight title. Tate was a punching bag. Norfolk was beaten twice in 3 months by decidedly 2nd rate Clay Turner. Larry Williams was a 5th rater and fought a draw with Norfolk in 1919. Harry Wills was a good heavyweight, even though Jack Johnson didn't think so. He was deserving.

@@petegarrido5406 Many would have beaten Johnson from 1913 on---but Tunney had high praise for Johnson in his book "'Arms for Living". He wrote the prospects of beating Jack Johnson at his peak---around the time he fought Jim Jeffries---were "black indeed." Tunney could clinch up Dempsey effectively because they were nearly the same size. A peak Johnson was like a rock. His peak physical strength on the inside was brutal and Tunney noted this. Johnson fought many fights with Jeanette, McVey, Langford, Griffin, Childs, Martin, Gardener, and other noted black heavyweights in his formative years. He clearly emerged as the best of the lot.

My grandfather spoke on this fight and said it happened. Also there was a newspaper article on ebay years ago that reported on the fight.. I didnt have the money in those days to buy it.

Jack Johnson (JJ) likely had more unrecorded fights than Jack Dempsey (JD), but in their pro careers their total fight records are pretty close (JJ =W 70, L 11 vs JD =W 68, L 6) with JD winning more by KO (JJ 35 vs JD 53), JD had about a 3 inch reach advantage, JJ's fight weight was on average 20 lbs heavier than JD (JJ 205 lbs vs JD 185 lbs) both were around 6'1" tall (above avg height for that time in boxing). Matching up their different fighting styles is what i think would have been great to see. JJ had a semi defensive rough style in which he used his weight and his sometime height advantage to wear his opponents down then humiliate them with his punishing strikes to the upper body then going to the head (not as effective with ppl your own size). JD used the peek-a-boo style (Tyson later added it into his own style to much success). in their prime that would have been incredible and i really dont know who would have won (although i might give the edge to JJ on power since he did a lot training techniques developed by strongman Eugene Sandow and i would give speed advantage to JD based on many of his fights). If they did fight late in JJ's career with a 17 year age gap then it may have happened like the article stated. use Foreman as an example he ran through people when he was in his 40s but there were a few that were faster and could deal with his power which gave him an L. Both JJ and JD are legends for a reason either way
