I hate to bust everybody's bubble, but the reality here is that, these are the words of Jeffries' publicist...NOT his own. Now, the maker of this video is absolutely right about the racialization of the fight game. That continued to Joe Louis-- they had several degrading nicknames pertaining to his blackness, Africa, the jungle, negro 'nihillator, and such. It continues today. The filmmaker gives us a wonderful reminder of what this country has always been. But he is wrong about Jeffries. Now I am not saying he cared about blacks personally or their societal plight...but he personally wanted no part of the racial vendetta. He had long retired undefeated and there are reports that when he started training for the fight, his weight was just south of 350 lbs. The Great White hope was not his creation. White America shamed him into doing it because they thought the retired and undefeated legend was the right man for the job. He was a farmer at that point...I am guessing successful but they threw a shitload of money at him, plus since it was filmed for prosperity, Jefferies AND Johnson both got paid for the rights...I believe, a first at the time. Champions come back for a couple of reasons-- money, and another shot at glory. Jefferies did this for a king's ransom and because a nation forced him to. It was like, I will try my best to do this for white America, but you will pay me like no other before. Once the fight was signed, Jefferies did not do a lot of media. It was going to take all he had to get in fighting shape...much less compete. That is why the comments are not widely known... because they are widely accepted NOT to be "Jeff's" own. The racist, inflammatory rhetoric while obviously an expression of white America's rage, was also fight hype. They want the money of the poorest, lowest common denominator too, to whom such vitriol appeals. It is the same thing with the Armstrong "angle.". Remember...Jack Johnson, the direct descendant of slaves-- they declared war on us any time they wanted to-- and it was big news to announce to the troops, "we got a spy in camp." If Jefferies truly felt that way, he never would've had a black man in his presence, much less in his camp. For Jeffries, this is all about asses in the seats, big payday, film rights, and winning an athletic contest where he could have been killed. Again, I am not saying Jeffries gave a flying fuck about black people. He may have even believed in the racist rhetoric, but that narrative was carried out by others and not the creation of the man himself. Interestingly, the OTHER thing that does not get publicized, is how complimentary Jeffries was of Johnson after the fight... humbled not for his racism but rather humbled as an athlete and competitor, conceding he could not have beaten Johnson in his prime. Jeff knew what was up...but a nation forced him to try. He just got caught up in the middle through no fault of his own....how could he turn it down?...how could he say no to America? He received a king's ransom and paid for it with one hellacious ass-whipping. Hope he got his money's worth. 🥊

Johnson and Langford fought each other in 1906. With a size advantage of 6 inches and 30 pounds Jack Johnson took an easy unanimous decision. Nothing from Langford though. Up until he died in the early 70's, ring historian Nat Fleischer ranked Jack Johnson as the greatest heavyweight of all time. Fleischer ranked Langford even higher than Marciano and Gene Tunney.

@@bryanpayne3793 Ducked is a strong word. I guess you can say he did technically. But to be fair, Johnson knew his time at the top was going to be limited. He had to make the most of every fight. Two black guys back then for the title would have been very unpopular. Johnson had to fight white guys for the title.
@StevenSmith-zw1pd
@StevenSmith-zw1pd 2 жыл бұрын
@@bryanpayne3793 I was about to light you up-- but I recovered my gentleman gene and have decided to let you off easy. First, at that level nobody "ducks" anybody. The defame/discredit Jack Johnson campaign is shameful. And the Johnson/Langford "rivalry" was ADMITTEDLY a media creation. Everybody talks like Johnson and Langford NEVER fought. They fought in 1906 before Johnson became heavyweight champion. By ALL accounts, Langford was a beautiful boxer and had the toughness and power to take on and defeat heavyweights. When he fought Johnson, however, he was young, and EARLY in his heavyweight campaign...giving up 20 lbs to Johnson, HE GOT THE SHIT BEAT OUT OF HIM. Langford was a middleweight who once decisively defeated the great "Michigan Assassin" and former World Middleweight Champion, Stanley Ketchel, who as reigning champ unsuccessfully challenged Johnson for the heavyweight title. By 1906 Johnson was the #1 contender. He had eliminated everybody and was about to chase then champion Tommy Burns around the world before catching up with him in Australia...Burns another smallish heavyweight who got the cat living dogshit beat out of him. That actually started a hopeful narrative among white America that Johnson could only beat small men...and that is when the search for the Great White Hope began. At times they were not even looking at fighters-- they were looking for a giant of a man that could not be knocked out...it took seven years, partying and drinking with white women, age, and lackadaisical training to finally lift the heavyweight title from the black race...the man was Jess Willard. 6'6 256 lbs...not very skilled but big, strong, tough, and most importantly a mere 26 years old compared to 37 for Johnson. And despite it all, Johnson beat the cat living dogshit out of Willard for 20 plus rounds. At the time of Willard's KO victory in the 26th Johnson had won nearly every round in1915. Yet this asinine narrative persists that hungry, prime Johnson from 1906 to 1910 was "scared" of a MIDDLEWEIGHT, when throughout his career, he destroyed smaller fighters, including Langford, which became propaganda for the racist hate mongerers that wanted to see him beaten. Now sure, Langford and his people called Jack out and challenged him repeatedly. Why not? But make no mistake about it, the white race wanted the heavyweight title and all it's racial/geopolitical symbolism back in the fold. NOBODY except the most staunch Johnson hater/racist was CLAMORING for this fight... desperate to see ANYBODY beat him...even another black man. But generally, and resoundingly, white America, the only voice that mattered was not interested in seeing two black men fight for the title...white America wanted the title BACK. Once Jack got the title, he defended it like a business man. He had beaten the shit out of Langford once and the prime Johnson that would emerge following that fight- 1906 to 1910 was not losing to a middleweight. Johnson was an international superstar and a rematch with another black fighter, who was smaller, and that he had already dominated MADE ZERO BUSINESS SENSE. Sam Langford was a beast. He no doubt is underrated and it is partly because instead of celebrating what he did do, the pundits continue to make the proxy argument of what he DID NOT DO against Johnson. Go back and read the true accounts of the one and only Johnson vs. Langford fight...not the accounts of racist haters who wish to destroy Jack Johnson's legacy. Jack beat the shit out of him because he was young, small, and inexperienced at the time-- moved on, became a global superstar and never looked back at Langford. A rematch simply made no sense. Did you ever wonder, why in the hell did Apollo Creed fight Rocky? For what? Rocky had no leverage. Unranked. Nobody was asking for that fight. It's the fight game man.

Jeffries was offered $100 k for this about which in those does was a huge sum of money. He later said the money he received was not worth the humiliation he felt after the loss. I truly believe Jeffries believed the fight was fixed. It was odd that the fight originally to be in California had a late location change to Nevada. Rumors were if the fight had taken place in California Johnson would have taken a dive but who knows. Jeffries in his prime was known for his strength, amazing endurance, ability to take huge amounts of punishment and his powerful left hand. He took none of those in the ring with him that day in Reno. He had to know this. It is written in several publications that Johnson told Jeffries days before the fight "Jeff this is not California. Every man for himself". It is said that Jeff brooded and went into a depression before the fight after hearing this. He commented later "I could always count on my left to the body. It never let me down. That day in Reno I left it go and it was little more than a powder puff. I knew I was in trouble"

Boxing was a huge draw even before it allowed black athletes to compete freely. It goes back to even the ancient Olympics where the early form of boxing involved two guys sitting opposite each other and punching themselves until one guy passed out. It's unimaginable today that there was a time when boxers or top athletes weren't of African descent given their dominance in pretty much every major popular sport.

I'm not real big on boxing. But I do have a pretty good knowledge of boxing history. If Rocky Marciano had come out of retirement around 1960 as he said he thought of doing in an interview. He likely would have eventually fought Ali or Sonny Liston. If either one of them had defeated Marciano it probably would have been a repeat of the Jack Johnson Jim Jeffries fight. Maybe even some rioting would have resulted as it did after this contest.

I'd sure like too see the newpaper where Jeffries "states he would never beat Jack Johnson" because if that isn't the biggest lie perpetuated over time. People just repeat it like it's fact. It's not in print. He wasn't saying anything like that after the fight.

it was his first “after he lost, I’ve seen it in the clippings. The narrative that developed soon after and four years obviously contradicted that completely. But to me he was his most honest at the finish of the match

@@grawakendream8980 I looked through all the newspapers the day after he lost. The words he said were starkly different than what that myth is perpetuated. It's just wrong. I looked through a dozen papers. Jeffries never stated "he would never beat Jack Johnson" He said he got beat by father time & had they meet earlier it would have been a much different fight. Even after a month after the fight he still is saying the same things. Do a search yourself...don't take my words as gospel. But i have access the dozen of newspapers the following month he never says anything along the lines of the great myth. Even with key searches it doesn't come up with anything in a longer timeline search. Unless you can point out a specific newspaper on a specific day that would contradict about a dozen other reports saying the complete opposite. I'll keep an open mind. But don't sell people a lie based on inaccurate data. I got no dog in the fight. I just is awful to have your actual words twisted so badly they somehow represent the complete opposite of what you're saying. I'm for factual accuracy.

@majik_man
@majik_man 2 жыл бұрын
@@grawakendream8980 It's not necessarily false. I'm saying the actual words out of his mouth after the loss to johnson contradict that information. Look at it from a fundamental approach. What other fighter do you recall saying he would never be able to beat him on his best day? I can't recall anyone saying such a thing. And for a standpoint for Jeffries he hadn't fought in years so he had a rich supply of excuse's he could draw from to go there seems highly unlikely. If you read the newspapers of the teen's such as 1915. They love to sensationalize things in general. If Jeffries said that it would be all over newspapers in a sensationalize matter. It doesn't even come up with keywords like in the 1920's and before. I will continue to look for quote. But even in Jeffries book (man among men) the author address the question of Jeffries saying such a thing and he could find no verifiable source. So by the wording it may not have appeared in print (newspaper). Either way the next day Jeffries isn't giving Johnson much credit for anything. I would think the thought's most fresh in his mind (the next day) are the most accurate with how he feels and he certainly 100% doesn't think Johnson is his superior. He did say something to the lines of Johnson was better than him on this day (which was a backhanded compliment)> I could find the full quote for clarification. Jeffries had a rich source of excuse's to use why utter something so foolish. If you've read newspapers before Jeffries fight with Monroe. He was really thinking about fighting Jack Johnson (in the newspapers) Johnson tune up fight for the title was Dec 1903 sandy Ferguson fight. Johnson looked so bad in the win he couldn't knock him out & he got knocked down by Ferguson but won a dull fight. Then in Jan of 1904 Jeffries no longer considered him of Heavyweight material. Johnson was almost as much to blame for not fighting Jeffries in his prime because he blew it. All that matter was how the press portrayed the people and the press roasted Johnson for his performance and it was kinda viewed as a final Tuneup in the press. The reason i'm saying all this is why would Jeffries say he could never beat him in his prime? Johnson had some mild trouble with Sandy Ferguson & lost to marvin Hart. Jeffries had to think he could of dominated both those fighters. Certainty not a caliper of fighter you would say i could never beat, the context makes no sense to me. Johnson choked away his opportunity. That's not someone anyone was fearing or avoiding in 1903/1904. It's neither boxer's fault i'm just portraying how the press viewed the whole ordeal. Far before this fight. Was it right to dodge Johnson even though he won the fight? Nope. He should have fought him immediately if he did actual appear that poor. Johnson bulked up quite a bit as champion. In 1904 he didn't have the power he had latter in life he was a skinny cruiserweight. with malnutrition. He would of had a very difficult time beating Jeffries in 1904. He surely could have done it though. And the matter should have been settled. Jeffries really had no foresight letting the opportunity pass on by in 1904. The Monroe fight should have been Jack Johnson. Jeffries was knocking out sparring partners then he was primetime in 1904 and would of stood his best chance at beating Jack Johnson. The Johnson vs Jeffries fight should be viewed by everyone as an exhibition fight. Anyone (years) removed from the ring it's not a creditable fight. Jeffries beating Jackson before him not creditable it was an exhibition and meant nothing. We certainly can't assume Jeffries was far superior to Peter Jackson & we can't assume Jack Johnson was far superior to Jim Jeffries. An exhibition win mean's nothing. Just trying to give some insight to all. Not reading the press (at the time) you're guessing at many things. I did it myself. That's why i'm giving you the event's of how the press is portraying things. If i find the quote of him saying such thing's i'll post the full comment. Me not finding it doesn't mean it didn't happen. But the what's actually printed in newspapers is telling a very different story.

This is a dope breakdown on the Johnson vs Jeffries match back in 1910. Jack Johnson went through hell back in those days because he was knocking out White men viciously. Also, he had a taste for White women, ie his wife. Not only did they talk mess to him at all his fights, but he talked the same mess back to them. Rest in peace to this ancestor.

So much of what was stated here is typical fight hype. Even comments are all part of promoting the fight. I spoke with many old fighters, and they all said the same. There supposedly was a color line as well. Yet here we have 2 who crossed that line. As well as dozens of others. Truth be told if the money was right any fighter black or white fought. And JJ let it be known he was not a racist. He was a humble farm kid who went along with the promo. JJ also being off from boxing would have a difficult time getting his skill level back, which he admittedly did not. Plus coming down from over 300 pounds to get close to fighting shape took its toll as well. Remember JJ did not want this fight. How much effort did he really put in training and the fight? With little to know motivation you can only imagine.

The ironic thing is that Jack Johnson refused to defend his title against any African Americans. He enjoyed being known as the only Black champion and didn’t want any other to hold the position. He was kind of a massive egomaniac. Even the way he bet against Joe Louis, and showed everyone the cash he had won that very night

Johnson was even a shithead by the standards of then. It says a lot that the black population preferred Louis later on over Johnson. Another honorable mention was Sam Langford.

I think Jeffries could have given Johnson all Jack could handle in 1904. But Jeffries avoided him, so that's on him. But... Johnson himself drew the color line as well. Giving Stanley Ketchel a shot, and avoiding Langford and Jeannette... was egregious.
