Now that I have my Odin 2 Pro I feel as if I've come to the end of my handheld journey. It all started for me a looooong time ago with the GP2X. Since then I've bought systems from AtGames, Gameboy style Famiclones, Raspberry Pi enclosures, systems from GPD, Anbernic, Powkiddy and a whole host of other companies never to be heard of ever again. I think I must have 40+ devices - not including the big hitters from Nintendo and Sony (or my really old stuff like the Game Gear and Lynx) - and I love them all. Even though they all have their quirks and bandiness. Sometimes because of their quirks and bandiness! But the Odin 2 Pro, for me, is just about perfect. It seems to do everything just about right, with no compromises. It plays all the games I want to play in a convenient form factor. I can't imagine anything coming along that would be so much better I'd want to upgrade. And for everything else, there's my Steam Deck. Anyway, I'm sure somebody found that ramble interesting 😁

I lowered the Odin 2's temps massively by replacing the default thermal pads with some Upsiren UTP-8 thermal putty. This actually caused more heat to escape via the copper plate and heatpipe, rather than going into the LCD screen.

I was put off by the Mini led screen because I want a oled screen but this review has me back on to ordering one. I love that it can get bright for outside use but also dim for at night use. The vignetting and blooming are a none issue for me. The battery life was my decider. I'm glad it can get at least 2 to 3 hours on switch but my intended use is mainly PS2 and PSP emulation with 3 to 4 hours which is enough for me. I’ve got a base model on preorder. I travel a lot and with my personal item bag there is barely any room if I have my work laptop and noise cancellation headphones in there. With snacks, chargers, a couple of personal items, it’s already getting out of hand. This device is about as large as I am comfortable with trying to fit in there. Honestly a Steam Deck and case seem like they would take the entire bag, I’m not even sure I’d be able to fit my headphone case in there. That’s why I went with the Odin 2 Mini. The sacrifices for being ultra portable are pretty minimal, especially compared to any other device on the market where the only other real competition is the RP4 Pro and Anberbic Cube. In my opinion you have to make huge sacrifices when comparing the other portable systems that struggle to play some PS2 and GameCube games to the Odin 2 Mini.

OLED is a much more refined technology than mini led and doesn't suffering from ghosting. and B. it's actually cheaper than mini-led and the device could have been more price competitive. the only advantages mini led have over OLED are brightness and lack of burn-in.

In regards to dpad positioning I think it depends on how you place your thumb, I use the joint of my thumb, so its more comfortable to have it on the bottom, but someone that uses the top or just above the joint would probably prefer to have the dpad up top and I think a lot of people dont realize there are different ways to use your thumb for inputs. Using the joint always felt more natural to me growing up playing fighting games and evetually I developed a callous that made it even easier to do.

I think it's cool they were able to produce the Odin 2 in a mini form factor with a PSV looking shell. Really cool that it's possible, but the sweet spot for me is the original Odin 2. I chose it over the steam deck due to it's perfect size, and battery life. The ergonomics seem to grow on me the more I pick it up. I can see the mini being perfect for a certain segment of the market, but for me the original is king. Software limitations are literally the only thing holding it back, Winlator development and other Emu's keep things exciting though.

If I'm looking for pc handheld, then I'm not going to get that Odin 2 over the mini. It's in that space for me due to its largess. Though the battery life is compelling. But other than that GTA 4 ON THE GO WITH A DECENT BATTERY LIFE (steam deck would probably have its battery die within a couple hours but better frame rate.) THAT ALONE IS WORTH THE PRICE OF ADMISSION.

I don´t have the odin 2 and i want buy one but i see the odin 2 have the thing i want (more cheap, bigger screen, more ergonomic and more battery) but when i see the diseign of the odin 2 mini is whe i fall in love of it.

For anyone concerned with how washed out Russes Saturation looks, Kei’s Retro Gaming found the android setting for saturation multiplier set to 1.3 fixes the colours and in his video it looks great!

im so glad the odin 2 mini screen is less saturated, the odin 2 is really overblown

I think personally this appeals a lot more than the Odin 2, not only is it way more visually appealing, but also I want to be able to use android devices on the go from my pocket, otherwise I'll just use my Steam Deck. Thanks for the in depth review.

Anyway, i had the odin 2, i loved it, but the screen died on me without reason. I was thinking about getting another odin 2, but i felt "burned", even if i got my money back. A different technology for the screen is mainly what drove me to the odin 2 mini. I hope it will arrive soon and that it will be good.

I enjoyed this video, as I do your others, but… when you talked about the fan being “pretty quiet and hard to really hear” and played the sound, that is not what I’d call “quiet”, it was noticeably loud, at least for me
@Bugside7 ай бұрын
You can't judge loudness via video, you don't know how close the mic was, among other things. Only way is by comparison, if he says it's less noisy than a handheld you know, there you go
@Dragoonnight7 ай бұрын
@@Bugside but tbf, we can make inferences on loudness via the video, as he specifically had that section that for us to hear it, otherwise he wouldn't have included the sound clip in the first place. Also he said "your probably not hearing much" when again, I could hear it pretty distinctly, and again tbf, imo

@@Dragoonnight I have another hobby, motorcycles, and I have hours spent comparing exhausts sounds on my bike model on KZbin (don't you judge me). One thing I can tell you is that via video you can compare sound tone, but not loudness,unless there's a back to back comparison same camera, same position, same setup. And even so is only relative to each other. Only other way is if the guy is talking and you can hardly hear him, now THAT'S loud. But there's no handheld like that, just bikes lol
@Dragoonnight7 ай бұрын
@@Bugside Well again tbf, my point is more that I based my thoughts on the clip "he" included and commented on of the fan running, and based on that, I thought it was loud "to me", cause as I was answering to your above, your first comment was "you can't judge loudness via video", but thats why he includes clips like that, so we can judge for ourselves (also the only judgement you get from me is that motorcycles are awesome, so you have a very cool hobby!😄)

God I would love the Odin 3 Lite to only look like the PSP but with two analog sticks. Then Odin 3 will have Hall Effect triggers, shoulder buttons, and sticks too.

I assume that the mini would sell less than half the Odin 2. The reason is mainly the price.

Vignetting is super easy to fix in software. It's common with almost every camera lens but you don't see it because it is corrected

Yeah, it really sounds like purchasing an Odin Mini 2 is matter of preference. Really unfortunate that AYN isn't selling an ergonomic grip to compliment the device though.

I think this will be worth buying. I'm going to wait for the release date in lazada philippines or in china. I missed playing old games like metal slug classics,

Whenever the ANBERNIC RG40XX is released. I would like to see a display and size comparison between the RG40XX and the Odin 2 Mini. They are both considered alternate versions of the PS-Vita. I also think both displays are the same height despite one being a 4 inch and the other being a 5 inch.

Excellent video per usual Russ. It's a very good device but not for me. Already got the Odin2 for indoor play and RP 2 pro for pocketable/on the go play.

IDK if I'm missing out by sticking with my Q2 SteamDeck, but just to keep it simple I'm fine with waiting for the SteamDeck 2. All these new devices release way too frequently

Thank you for review Russ! For d-pad on odin 2 - it is more comfortable to put index finger near middle finger in the center of the device if you need no L1/L2, I use it personally for sega genesis games, same for the right hand.
