Cool Overview, thank you! I also like that you are somewhat critical, giving your own opinion. While I can understand people who don't want to demotivate indie developers, an "Everything is awesome!" presentation you see elsewhere doesn't actually feel very informative.

Thanks for picking this up as it is such an important part of the 'review' process. Balanced and constructive critiquing is a must in order to ensure that the quality of game titles for any given platform continues to improve. No one benefits if we just end up with a big collection of 'shovelware' titles.

Enjoyed the tutorial from Robert, interesting stuff. Flimbo's Quest uses four character sets to provide its brilliant parallax scrolling.
@rwxdesignsКүн бұрын
Flimbo does indeed use 4 character sets just like games like Hawkeye, but Salamander (IMO) I think is more impressive given its constant copying of data across the two double-buffered scrolling screens for the animation. Add to that the parallax starfield, the sprite multiplexing and the music/fx, it's a nice bit of work and no surprise it slows down from time to time. However, glad you liked tutorial in its basic form. It is a bit more involved from a coding perspective, but I didn't want to break down into such a low level - I will keep that on my own channel.

Louie, another great presentation, although I found the coders corner a little dry. I value your channel for its light relief - and the charm, warmth, honesty, and dry wit of your no-nonense reviews and commentary. If I want to brush up on my C64 coding, this isn't the place I'll go ... I'll instead head over to Robin's 8-bit show and tell channel. That being said, a most satisfying roundup to watch as always. Stay safe, and wishing you an Advance Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

I can definitely appreciate how a regular 15-20 minute fix of C64 goodness delivered in a magazine style every month would be the ideal format. We've had a good run with it and hopefully whatever I try differently will hit a good spot and still within the same spirit of the long form videos.

I was execting the tutorial to show the bitmap data being "streamed" into the charset, copying data from outside the charset into the four dedicated chars instead of copying data within the charset. That way more chars could be used for other graphical detail.
@RetroGamerNationКүн бұрын
Really pleased that you enjoyed it. I was hoping that Coder's Corner could be a more regular thing but I just couldn't find coders who had the time to put a short piece together.
@rwxdesigns16 сағат бұрын
There are two ways you can do it. In the game, I print the fans at different offset positions to one another. The benefit is that I am only using a single routine rather than four separate routines.

You mention end of an era. Are you discontinuing the c64 roundup? I hope not!! 😊
@RetroGamerNationКүн бұрын
Unfortunately, this was the last C64 Round Up. I do have performance benchmarks for my videos and while viewer numbers are high relative to my peers, they have been in decline and growth is something that sustains my interest. There will be plenty of C64 content coming from RGN, just in a more manageable format.

@rwxdesignsКүн бұрын
I would say it's more difficult to create something entirely new. I don't think it's always intentional, but if people like to do a newer version of a game as a challenge I don't see a problem with it.
