I agree. I use the same approach when I restore wood furniture - focus on structural integrity, restore it to its original state as much a possible (I only paint it modify if the piece is too far gone to refinish), and honor its history. It doesn't have to (and probably shouldn't) look brand new.
@Siansonea
@Siansonea 2 жыл бұрын
I like your philosophy about restoration. The goal isn't to erase the history of the object, and sometimes the best approach is to leave something alone. I have several Barbie dolls that have green staining at the earring holes, a common problem, that I have chosen not to restore. The reason is that the dolls are otherwise perfect, and restoring the green has the chance of causing damage that isn't currently an issue. The chemicals can cause paint to bleach and fade, and I don't want that for these dolls. So I just accept the green as part of the dolls' history.

Thank you so much for your message 😊😊 That's also a great point about the "price" of restoring something that you know might affect the rest of the toy. Every treatment we do to these figures we are usually shortening their life (I think that's the case with acetone, for example, so I always try to wash it off completely). There are also materials we have only been using for a few years and don't know what long term effects they may have. So, yes, I agree 😊

the extra long tails are cute and make me feel sentimental, seeing how long they've survived with the stubby and stained tails. Considering how the soft brushable hair was so important to their identity as a toy, it feels like they're getting to express that quality even more in their second life

I think for me cutting dolls and pony's hair was exciting and new as we were never able to cut our own hair! I remember once trimming a tiny bit of my fringe (bangs) and my mum went crazy haha! Whereas cutting my barbies hair was okay as she didn't have to go to school the next day with a wonky fringe!🤣🤦🏼‍♀️

For blushing I've seen most doll repainters use pastels. I wonder if paint would have given you better luck if you watered it down more. The blush is super cute so I hope you keep exploring options.

@@RetroGeekCrafts chalk pastels work fine. Most of the repainters i watch use mungyo soft pastels, since theyre quite vibrant. However unlike paint, pastels need a protective layer to lock it in since its just dust. They use Mr super clear matte to seal the pastels, best to use a spray. That spray actually dries matte but im not sure how it will look if you only spray the pony head, the whole pony is already matte vinyl.
@thechellenator

Yes! Soft pastels won't crack or flake off like paint. Poppen Atelier's recent Glinda the Good Witch video is a great example of using soft pastels to completely change a doll's skin tone. (She first uses the opposite colour on the colour wheel, like putting pink or red over green, to neutralize the original colour, and then layers on whatever new colour she wants it to be.) Dollightful has a similar video from 2018 where she created an anthropomorphic version of the Pokemon Umbreon and used soft pastels to turn a doll's cream-coloured skin pitch black. HeXtian's recent Juno Birch video shows changing a cream skin tone to pale purple, then blushing it. His Bild Lili doll video shows using soft pastels for body blushing. And he sometimes uses actual human makeup on doll faces, like blush and highlighter. Hope those are useful! All three artists have publicly available lists of all the supplies they use, too. 💜

@@collectablechaoseng Yes, the comment I was replying to already mentioned Mr. Super Clear, as do the videos I recommended. And all the dolltubers I recommended videos from have experimented with a variety of sealants. I never said pastels would work on every surface, but there's no harm in experimenting to see whether they could be useful for what RGC wants to do.

This is surely one the hardest works you had to do with pony's. The stains were too strong, personally I would gave up at the first glance lol. I think you wanting to keep the ponies' marks and signs of age is really lovely and well said! While it is really nice to see a toy restored to "factory condition" (or as close as a person can get), it's also equally nice to see them being restored and allowed to carry their memories of play and the damage that may come with that! Keep doing what you love and caring for these ponies!

I totally agree with your sentiments about damage on Retro toys. I recently got some old Bakugan from an etsy seller and one of them had some pretty bad yellowing in the plastic so the seller offered to trade it for one in better condition, but I declined because I've grown attached to the damaged one. Those spots are like beauty marks to me, and it means my toy is a unique. Though it sounds cheesy to actually type that out lol

Besides the sentimental value of the markings, I actually think the light bleaching makes her look quite pretty, a bit like a paint horse even! MLP has kinda always had a critical lack of interesting coat patterns on the ponies from what I've seen throughout my life, and while that's not necessarily a bad thing I DO think it kinda starts to become bland as time goes on.

I’ve seen doll repainters use pastels, or barring that, real blush make up to add the blush, the only issue is it can wear off if it isn’t sealed with a matte spray. I can’t believe you got that much rust off. I recently found out that the washers were originally used to help balance the ponies because the heads were so heavy they’d fall forward (in my memory they still did). I don’t remember the family sets, but this pony reminds me of one I had called Blossom, I think.

I love your attempt at blushing! If you're looking for a more "makeup" type look, the strategy you took is a great one. However, if you would like to try for a more "natural" style of blush, I find that using a color a few shades darker and slightly redder than the skintone of the doll(pony, person, etc) will yield an easy soft look. Oh!! 🥺 This brought back memories of my childhood. In the early 2000s, we moved into a new house. My brother found a whole collection of these my little pony toys in the shed in the backyard. We cleaned them up and they were some of my favourite toys- I wonder what ever happened to them!

Oh gosh this one was a tough nut!!! All that rust!!! You did such a great job restoring this pony 😲🥳. I think maybe try dry brushing the blush on next time? I’ve seen some doll customizers do that, maybe it’ll help! Sponges soak up the paint so much that even trying to dab it away from the surface of the sponge, it still has plenty soaked up there. But that’s still a great technique too! I love doing Galaxy customs with sponges 🥰. Still, an awesome restoration!!

A good tip is to add the peroxide cream *inside* the body as well. I've found that works well with rust and inner staining (especially with glitter ponies). And I TOTALLY agree with you about something keeping the marks of the past. There is a charm to it, especially if its your age and older :)

Goodness poor pony, is this the worst case you've restored so far? I think most people would just throw away a toy in a shape as bad as this, yet you saw it as a toy worth saving anyway. She turned out very lovely 💜. I have to echo the sentiment that marks on toys shows their history, especially considering it's a 30+ year old toy. Like it's scars, birthmarks and stretchmarks.
@RetroGeekCrafts

I think this one is the second worst case (Peachy still takes the crown because I had to remove all that paint). Rust is a little shocking at first but not difficult to remove (unlike pen and permanent marker) 😊😊

I think for the blush i would recommend trying a cosmetic sponge and maybe more of a pink instead of a bold red. Cosmetic sponges have finer pores to them so the paint will look softer, you can also use a fluffy brush that you've rubbed almost all the paint out of as well.

This was very wholesome; I personally try hard to bring the pony back to its original condition, so removing every little mark is what I aim to do. But sometimes there are those little marks that just want to stay, and they somehow become part of the memory. I have a Perfume Puff pony who has some sort of whiteboard marker stains on one side of her body, and I left them there because I like to think that whoever owned it in the past was getting a bit artsy. You did a great job, and I'll be sure to try your blushing technique!
@RetroGeekCrafts
@RetroGeekCrafts 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you 😊😊 I wholeheartedly agree. Sometimes the pony tells you what they want to "be" after the repairs. In this case, I liked the marks but also I was also a little scared that dying the pony could damage the paint -- so it was a compromise. Both :)

for blushing the pony, you can try using a spray sealant (mr Super Clear is the go-to for customizers but it's quite toxic - you need a respirator and do it outside) and apply the blush using chalk pastels and a fluffy brush :)

As an 80s baby you really did this pony good 👍. I'm loving keeping it original and letting her age show a bit. Thanks I love the apple jack one personally and have quite a few still that my mom kept. For blushing I learned to use like pastels ground up to like makeup and a soft brush then you seal it with Mr super clear to seal the work.

I wonder what a commercially available rust remover like Evapo-Rust would do with a rust-stained pony… probably would not magically return the pony to a pre-rusty state, but it might cut down on scrubbing, especially with a broken down washer like in this case. And of course, there is the question of how effective it would be for its cost. Anyone have any info to share?
