Have both and have used both in LE for over 30 years. You can't go wrong with either. With either, you are well armed. With that said, I have switched from the 870 and now prefer the 590a1. Excellent comparison!

I am excited to have Remington back! My dad raised me on his 870 Express Magnum made in 2001. It looks just like your 870 here, but it has a synthetic stock. We still have it today. I have a 500 and an 88, but I went ahead and got this same gun with the 4 round tube. It feels good to be able to buy an affordable pump gun that employs American workers and supports the American economy. I'll report my findings on my channel when I get some rounds thru it.

We share the exact same opinion. I'm a Mossberg guy and still feel very comfortable with running a 500/590. Heck I've owned Maverick 88s I'd say are on par and preferable for the absolute steal they are sold for. But SOMETHING about that 870 man. I had an Express tactical 18 inch years ago and was expecting to favor the Mossberg, but when I got some range time with it I fell in love too. They just FEEL that extra bit better. Like 10% better than the Mossberg 500. You can't really exolain why. Personally I think the reciever being steel helps weight balance and shootability when every Mossberg I've owned is front heavy especially with heat shields and heavy walled barrels. That and the action is just butter smooth. It just pointed and shot better basically. I just found the 870 to be a smoother operating shotgun in terms of actually using it. That's not to say the 500/590 isn't smooth, because they are very smooth especially when compared to that crap coming from Turkey, but I just felt the 870 was 10% better. Lol That was the only way to describe it. Now it seems the 870 barely has any more fans since the Freedom Group troubles. If Remington could get their QC in line with Mossbergs, I do believe some Mossberg fans would flock to 870s. They are just amazing shotguns in design. Time will tell if they can be that good in quality again though.

Just purchased the 870 [R81197] a few hours ago, it was $670 CAD. The 590A1 retrograde was double the price from this supplier, after being marked down $100. Going to pick it up tomorrow, feeling very excited, it's my first firearm.

I feel the same way. I bought my Mossberg to be my go too shotgun and a Remington as a beater. But I ended up loving the look, and feel of the Remington much more.

The new Remington HD 870 is not the same as previous Express 870... It's FAR better! Broke one in recently shooting clays and I'm seriously impressed. Perfect function and beautiful to boot! Looks like the old school Big Green quality is back!

I own and love both Remingtons and Mossbergs. I like the 870 better personally but I like the 590 almost just as much. You really can’t go wrong with either gun. Get one of each so you have something to hand to a buddy when they forgot their gun. If you have both, you truly have the better one.

I also have read that with the right spring and follower you can get 7 into the 870 with 18 inch barrel.

Now i started with a Winchester 1897 12 GA i like the Mossberg pump handed,s i have thrre Mossbergs now 1 500 12GA 18.5 inch barre 6 shoot 1 590 20 GA18,5 inch 7 shoot for the girls.& 1 590 12 GA 7 shoot 18'5 inch barre .being a left hand shooter i really like the safet on the Mossbergs , now i had a Mossberg 500 20 GA but when one of my girls move out & she got it ,

Ran my 870 in a shotgun class had a few double feeds where I think I may have short stroked it. Empty shell behind one in chamber or something stuck on the loading ramp. I had to fish it out or maybe it was the challenger 7.5 handicap shotshells

👍 Good comparison of two excellent shotguns. A couple of years ago I looked at both and went with the 590 retrograde because I liked the location of the controls better and thought the fit and finish was better.

It's funny. I actually just sold my 870 not too long ago and picked up a 590 retrograde. While I think the overall quality of the 590 is better, I do miss just how smooth the action of the 870 was right out of the box. That being said, I don't think you'd go wrong buying either gun

Having used neither, I like the Mossberg more. I think it looks better and on paper, has better features. But once you get them in hand and put rounds through them, opinions tend to change, I'm sure.

I'd take rem870. Steel reciever - lasts +500.000 shots. Bought in '60 for 100$ ~900$ now, Get a slightly used, or a new on (police mag/wingmaster). Change springs, extractor to a Non-MIM, maybe ejector to a Non-MIM. Better coating and use the xtra $ for training.

Ive seen the 590 going around 500 to 600. If you dont mind plastic you can get a 590 for around 450. 700 is way to much. This is how i see the 2. 590 for self defence 870 for hunting. I think the 870 design just makes for a better hunting gun. Fits/feels better in the hand, smoother action and swings better. The 590 like the 500 just feel beefier more solid in the hand. Thing i dont care for in the Mossberg is how dam thick the stock is where you grip it. It feels like your holding a 2x4 and the action is stiff compared to alot of other pump guns. Both guns will work in both rolls but i think because the way they were designed that the mossberg is better as a defence gun and Rem is better for a hunting gun. I have both guns so this is just my 2 cents.

You need to find an early Remington combat magnum 21" with a 7 shot tube and rem chokes.

WIth the right spring and follwer you can also get 7 into the 18 inch version. And theoretical with a 21 barrel und flush tube it should be able to hold 8 like the Mossberg 590.

The more neutral color of the wood version may make it more suitable for hunting. One thing I can tell you for certain is the short 4 round tube version makes the gun a delight to point and handle. Without that extended tube weighing the muzzle down, the gun is way easier for me to snap on target and swing between targets or after a moving game animal. If you can get by with 5 rounds, you gotta at least feel one of the 4+1 versions and see what you think.
