Please note that ballistics gelatin or ballistics gel (two different substances) is not 1 to 1 analogous to a human. Ballistics gelatin or ballistics gel is mainly used (if calibrated and at a specific temperature) to provide a repeatable test medium for research. The FBI recommends that the projectiles be able to penetrate 16 - 20 inches in ballistics gelatin to perform adequately in a human torso. The gelatin will allow greater penetration than a human body will by about 105% to 110%. Additionally, the test medium does not adequately imitate skin, bone, organs or other tissues and any clothing worn will have an effect as well. The recommendations made by the FBI addresses the shortcomings in the test medium when testing the performance of ammunition. The FBI standard is based on a specific and repeatable test medium and testing conditions which allow for useful testing and evaluation of the performance of various projectiles which allows us to compare them accurately. The FBI standard also allows for independent verification of the results by others. The Ballistic torsos used in this video does address some of the short comings of a standard block of ballistics gelatin or ballistics gel alone. The torsos used still lack skin and clothing and we do not know if they were calibrated, what temp they are at during filming, how old they are and other factors, so your mileage may vary.

I was in law enforcement for about 27 years, and a detective specializing in violent crime (and other unpleasant stuff) for around half of that. I really like medical breakdowns like this. I used to discuss these things with medical examiners and ER physicians to learn all that I could. This helped me not only in investigating crimes, but in choosing ammo for carry (I was, later in my career, over firearms for my dept). What I especially enjoyed about this video is the sharing of medical expertise, a bit of humor (a lot of humor from Garand Thumb, whose channel I enjoy too) and all with NO POLITICS. Well done, sir! Well done indeed!

@@christopherpottie8474 9mm was 115gr +p+ Federal 9bple, .40 (our main duty caliber then) was Federal 165gr HST. .223 was Federal 55gr boat tail jhp. 12 ga was Federal 00B Tactical with "Flite-Control" wads and their "low recoil" 1oz slugs. I retired and they recently went back to 9mm as primary, issuing Federal 124 HST (a fine round and I approve .. for all that matters).

In most standing armies the degree to which you are trained to engage in combat, combined with the likelihood of combat, both directly correlate to the level of battlefield first aid you are expected to learn. I think the average citizen who wishes to carry outside the home, should honestly be required to learn at least basic trauma aid for the very same reasons (along with training with the firearm you intend to carry...like at all). If you're having to use your firearm, you're already acknowledging that things have gone very wrong, so it's only logical that you be able to render aid to bystanders, being that you're already at the scene of the incident. When it comes to trauma wounds that aren't deadly outright, the odds of survival directly correlate to the length of time between initial wounding, and initial treatment. Now of course this is all being done after the danger has passed, at least in your vicinity. First rule of treating a battlefield casualty is to not become a casualty yourself. I'll also add that in a self defense case you still need to win over a courtroom, and nothing shows that you're not a bloodthirsty vigilante like attempting to render aid to your attacker (when conditions are deemed safe, of course).

An individual that breaks into my home, assaults me, or attempts to harm myself or others around me is not a patient until AFTER the threat to our lives has been neutralized. I was a Navy FMF Corpsman for 9 years. The same concepts applied in warfare as they would here in the states. If an enemy combatant attempts to do harm to me or those I am with, I am authorized to use deadly force, however, once deadly force has been applied and the threat is neutralized, if they are still living I then have an obligation to provide medical care, so long as that medical care does not needlessly compromise my safety or the safety of others.

I think the more educational videos should be monetized and encouraged. Not so much this type, which I do find fascinating, but anything touching on safety and safe operation? It's valuable. We've got a ton of guns in the states, and there's quite a few people that weren't raised around them. Folks that don't have the safety rules and procedures ingrained from childhood can be more susceptible to mistakes. This was always really apparent when we'd take a handful of buddies to the woods for some target practice. One of my friends and I would have to play range officer and really keep an eye on the guys that weren't raised on it. I trained my nephew on safety for years before he ever got out to the range. I'd let him check out a gun of mine if he was curious, same procedure every time. Have him lay out the steps to ensure it was unloaded and safe, and I've never had to correct him on a live fire range. He doesn't have to think about it, it's just the way it's done for him. Best way to ensure that you'll never have to hear the words "I didn't think it was loaded"

Its important to note that when Garand is measuring distance, it's in YARDS not "feet" as this guy said. We measure shooting distance in yards. (3ft=1yd). Garands first shot was at 7yds(21ft).

Every 9mm gunshot wound has a potential for complications leading to death. The shotgun just adds 8 additional sets of complications to manage. It's like trying to perform surgery on 8 patients at once. But from a tactical standpoint, we are operating under the "Multiplication Law," where, rather than trying to Shoot an opponent 8 times in succession and then moving onto engaging a second target, we can shoot 8 targets, raising number of simultaneous complications to 64 hereby overwhelming the surgeon and driving him into alcoholism.

Criminals will do whatever, gun, knife, fist, it doesn't matter as they will hurt you if they want to. But most regular won't harm you unless you give them a reason to.

@@dudenukem1594 That's the entire point, anyone can be armed so therefore criminals, whether private individuals or governmental, should think twice before harming or trampling on the rights of anyone else. Words on a sign do nothing to those who do not abide by the law and punishment after the fact does not save the dead or keep people free. Additionally the statistics of gun crime are heavily manipulated by anti-gun organizations and politicians as a scare tactic, many more are killed by far more mundane things, such as car crashes, and the majority of the common "40,000 deaths per year" thrown around are actually suicides which does not speak to guns being the issue but rather mental health, something banning guns will never fix. Additionally many "mass shootings" are not such and only encorporate 1-3 deaths (and even the mass shooting with the largest body count still has 3x less deaths than when a man rented a moving truck and proceeded to run people over) and in some particularly egregious manipulations will include false calls of shootings to police to bolster the numbers, a tactic favored towards the beginning of years to over inflate the early numbers and make current events appear worse than they are. All of that is to say that unless you are actively going around attempting to rob, fight, oppress, etc the people of America or intentionally visit the parts of major cities that have high crime rates (which are where the majority of Anti-Gun legislation is in place I might add which only further proves its ineffectiveness) than you are extremely unlikely to even have one pointed at you let alone actually used. And before Europe or Canada are used as "examples of good gun control" I'd also like to point out that crime rates across Europe, in some areas more than other, are still high and frankly I'd prefer the right to defend myself with a firearm than hope that I don't run into someone with a knife, bomb, acid, *illegally owned firearm*, or any other weapon with no options but to surrender myself and hope they do not still kill me anyways (which does happen and there is even video footage from CCTV of it happening). I hope this leads you to further research into the world of firearms and perhaps even giving handling them a chance one day but I also understand if you do not, it is your choice after all, but I simply ask you do not deny others the right to defend themselves and their loved ones with the most effective tools available, after all when seconds matter the police are only minutes away.

When I took my carry license class years ago one of the women made the comment, "I don't want to kill anyone." The instructor quoted her this information. With quick medical treatment, the survival rate from being shot with a handgun is 70%. From a rifle, 35%. From a shotgun... 10%. Or as Clint Smith of Thunder Ranch put it. A handgun bullet will go in the body. A rifle round will go in and come out the other side. With the right load at the right distance, a shotgun will remove a chunk of shit and put it on the floor. He didn't exactly understand the firearm stuff. His understanding of the way the wad works was factually incorrect. It doesn't keep everything together until the moment of impact, it's not supposed to - that would defeat the purpose of the spread effect of shotgun BBs. It keeps everything together and sealed from the gunpowder explosion while in the barrel, but separation begins as soon as they exit the barrel.

Small correction. The distances GT is shooting at are measured in yards, rather than feet. The first shot at 7 yards is 21 feet, then at 10 yards, 30 feet, with the final shot being at 25 yards, or, 75 feet. Excellent analysis. Really hammers home the devastating power of these weapons.

There are quite a few of these channels like Garand Thumb doing these sort of light-hearted but actually quite useful practical analysis of what various firearms do with human body facsimiles. It's interesting. They're trying to get hits. They buy or get donated the torsos and they do the 'science' for entertainment. I love the extra layer that Dr Chris Raynor has added to this process. Still, guns bad though. Let's get this straight - I'm not saying they're not cool. Guns are cool as heck and playing with them is great fun in video games, so they're probably even more viscerally exciting in real life. However, easy access to something that can deal this kind of damage, at distance, over the course of a fraction of a second, with comparatively minimal training or skill required, is a recipe for disaster. Advocating for gun rights is similar to advocating for untrained common people piloting commercial jet liners - except with a much, much lower financial barrier for entry and much, much higher ease of operation. I could give you the numbers to back up my claims, but it's likely you've already seen them and decided to ignore the truth that while yes, guns are super cool, regular people should really not be allowed anywhere near the trigger. You know, like jets.

Someone who isn't physically capable against the intruder or attacker should have as much leverage against the threat whatever it may be. Something to keep in mind: shooting 00 Buckshot basically means you're firing out 8x (traditionally, sometimes 9) .33" sized projectiles at 1,300 feet per second or thereabouts. At the same time. While the dimensions (and velocities) aren't the same, the kinetic energy of each and every pellet is almost on par with .380 Auto. Not exactly impressive... but then again most people that don't think .380 Auto is that effective also aren't shooting 8 or more rounds at the same time. And at nearly 1,300 fps? You're going to get some nasty deformation with lead shot. 8 times or more at once, potentially.

The best job of my life was when I had my own clinic at WTBN, Quantico and my friend was the captain of the Rifle Team. He let me shoot at the range. One thing to keep in mind about ballistic gel tests especially with blocks is that they are not a 1:1 analogy for human flesh. But they are close enough to get an idea of what ballistics do a body and testing on a common medium gives better test results.

I had some amazing training in Weapons Effects and GSW treatment nearly half a century ago, from Combat Medics and a Thoracic Surgeon who'd treated hundreds of casualties in Tehran during the Iranian Revolution. That was a great honour. They could not have prepared me better for "The Golden Hour". You've turned GarandThumb's experiment into a great training video which was technically impossible all those years ago. One thing I'm rather curious about is the damage and potential lethality of the "less-than-lethal" / "Non-Lethal" rounds. I've seen different designs from balls to bean-bags to foam-rubber slugs with some being solid rubber slugs. With your metal slugs, you can definitely see the lethality as they zip through the target, creating maximum damage. Some of the rubber slugs, they look pretty nasty and could cause some serious damage. Another thing about shotguns is that they pack one hell of a punch. Got spanked by one cause I was an idiot and didn't shoulder it right. Took me a good two weeks to heal up.

There is a reason they are called "less lethal" and not non lethal. They can still cause enough damage that they can be deadly. Most rubber slugs are designed to be "bounced" off the ground to reduce speed and burn off some of their velocity. A direct impact to the face, neck or sternum can result in death. Beanbags are a little different. Their size, shape and weight means they burn off that velocity pretty quickly but still need to be used with caution since hitting the same areas as above at a close enough range can result in the same outcome. Foam slugs are the safest but we are talking about a 40mm foam slug, not a 12G. An impact to the throat could cause serious issues at close range.

@@mylt1z28 and beanbags have a minimum range to unfold and flatten out. I recall hearing about a demonstration of them being done in the 1980s where they were too close, and the beanbag went in sideways, seriously wounding the man it was being demonstrated on. There's a reason the folks who carry the less-lethal shotgun get lots of specialized training on them.

I’ve never considered less than lethal ammunition for the simple fact that if I need a shotgun or any firearm I’m shooting to kill. I would only pull a firearm if it’s a life or death situation and in that circumstance I shoot to kill. If it’s a situation where less than lethal might be appropriate it could be argued you were not in a life or death situation and didn’t need to use a firearm. Just my opinion and I’m sure some over zealous prosecutors will try to push that narrative.
