Not sure why. Been pretty proven at this point his review unit isn't matching up to units a lot of people are receiving. Mine included. Got it two days ago and it's running perfectly. Correctly connects to TVs at 720p too. No screen issues. No apps crashing. No button problems. Had to adjust a couple Android settings to get things how I wanted, but other than that it was really just emulator settings needing setting up mainly. Thing kicks ass for the most part and feels way better to hold than my RP2+. Got used to the volume and start button locations after like an hour of playing. Widescreen hacks have been working on a lot of apps so far also. Had to figure out how to enable it in a couple of them though, but the screen is beautiful no matter what I was testing. Really bright at max. Live wallpapers are awesome and I like that there's many colors themes to pick from. It would be cool if they came up with more live ones and pushed them in updates.

I wouldn't say "these ones" like it's a small number of good units either. It's like the vast majority based on everything I've seen. A minority of people posting about touchscreen not working or their unit not turning on (probably dead battery). Lot worse reporting when RP2+ launched than what I've seen so this is a more consistent launch so far. If 6 months from now mine has all sorts of problems I'll eat my words of course.

A tip, generate your collection on launchbox for windows, and scrape your images at low resolution, that should give you quite a speed boost. I noticed many images launchbox scrapes on android can be from 1-15mb! That is insane to me. Not bad at all! Not bad at all.

I actually really appreciate you taking the time in talking about pocketability and even showing it. That's a huge factor for me in deciding on these devices. I thought it may be a bit too large given the larger screen size, and I was worried about it being bigger than the vita and 351MP. For me, 351MP is more or less my ideal size/screen size and shape, especially for retro gaming Even absolutely love the cobalt blue. This handheld is very similar aesthetically. Usually makes little sense for me to buy a device that has a larger screen yet can't play the platforms that the bigger screen largely benefits. However, that makes it a great streaming/cloud device however I never have done that. Usually, these devices are more for when I'm out of the house. This video has made me more interested in the idea, plus it still being largely pocketable, amazing screen, and is rather comfortable.

Totally logical decision! Somehow I drank something that limbered up my Visa card resulting in a confirmed preorder (😇). The last console I bought was Dreamcast (was given a 360 and played it about 4 times), so this should be perfect for me! The 2/2+’s online are often selling for $130-$150! I’ll pay $130 for the extra RAM, better buttons and bigger touchscreen + Android 11 (Vs 9)!

@@sideswipe1261 Hey that's a bit funny because the last new contempory console I got also was the Dreamcast as well :P! I think it was already "discontinued" (but regular people like us had absolutely no idea about any of that stuff; I mean, internet barely was what it is right now). The price had been reduced enough for my old folks to afford it. It's also the only time in my life that I played AND enjoyed an FPS with a controller (Unreal Tournament FTW!)... Although I enjoy playing classic FPS on my PS Vita (bought used to be hacked like all of my other handhelds). Anyway ;). IMHO, it is ridiculous for this to be called the RP3, since it has the same specs as the RP2+... It does not really make any sense, because the 2+ was a HUGE step up from the 2, but the 3 has the same specs has the 2+. Not very logical. It's also a device that was to be released more than a year ago, and it really shows. Not to mention the plethora of issues it has (see Taki's videos). And this is a personal opinion, but imho the RP2+ had the screen size AND aspect ratio for the type of games it could emulate best. Thus, the RP2+ kind of made its own niche (it's the most powerful device with such a screen and at an unbeatable price). Now they want to sell us a device with an ordinary screen, but with the same specs? It's dumb. Look at the 2D Saturn footage of this video for example; it seems to be a screen within a screen within a screen lol :P How is this better than a RP2+ playing the same games full screen? The price increase is also enough that I see ZERO reason to buy this over saving a few bucks to get an Odin Base, Pro, or Lite instead. Let's also not forget that Retroid probably would get the award for the ABSOLUTELY WORST customer service amongst ALL such companies. Yes, even worst than Anbernic, no joke! In fact, can you qualify something that does not exist at all lol?
@sideswipe12612 жыл бұрын
Dreamcast is amazing, and I have 3 or 4 official units (they used to be $20 used w/controller & VMU, so bought spares years back. Now the same store’s selling them for $120+ without even a controller! For the Pocket 3, I’ve seen quite a bit of video of Dreamcast nailing 59-61fps easily with just a couple games (which I don’t want anyway) chugged a bit. DC and below will keep me a happy camper. I found out about it having the same guys as the 2+ after ordering (I’m a genius like that), but hopped online and all the 2+’s I saw were selling used for $120-$130, so for the same price I’ll take the bigger screen, extra GB RAM, refined GUI and Andy 11 with 2 real analogue sticks. (Still need a tutorial on making an SD with roms I already have but need extracting from RPi images- so setup makes me a bit nervous). The Pocket will be mainly for rainy days on vacation and quick bathroom sessions! I do most gaming on Rpi-400, so prebuilt images are easy to find (I’d pay for a solid premade card for the Retroid if I can find one to avoid headaches if you happen to know where to look!). I’m also about to assemble my DreamCase: a squared-off wooden suitcase with a Dreamcast, VGA box, 17” flatscreen monitor, powered stereo speakers with room left for game discs, controllers and may add my RPi3b+ just for fun. Wish me well! I have all the components, all works great, just gotta slap it together this week!got the idea a couple years ago, time to finally do it. Cheers!

It's only speculation but RP3's odd 750p resolution in 4.7" size was previously used by Apple for their iPhones for a few years. Considering how these things are produced I wouldn't be surprised if these were from those productions and it might explain why the screen quality is so good compared to other retro handhelds.

Unless you just want something that will take advantage of widescreen hacks, Dreamcast emulation won't be any different on the RP3, even if you get the +1 GB of ram "upgrade." In fact, a lot of games will look significantly worst, since games with no widescreen hack won't fill the screen because of the aspect ratio. Look at the Saturn footage in this review for instance, it looks absolutely ridiculous (the "play area" is actually smaller than it would on the RP2+, and it will be the case for most of the systems that those 2 systems actually emulate the best...).

People have positivity bias. They just above their fingers in their ears when they hear something that doesn't conform to their views and go into full cognitive dissonance.

Thanks for the in depth review Russ, always appreciate your efforts. Nice to see this seems to have turned out ok, like most I was a bit concerned. I'm ok with the devices I have, that I'm still tempted is a testament to how close Retroid have come to nailing a device at this price point. Cheap, cool and comfy - happy days.

Another fantastic review Russ, what a great start to the weekend! I found that Flycast runs MvC2 at full speed and also supports widescreen cheats 👌 Also well worth running PS1 in widescreen mode (extra geometry support) to take advantage of that glorious screen.

Thanks for mentioning the vibrancy and color saturation of the display. I noticed the saturation and vibrance when you put it next to the RP2 and then you said if you didn’t know, you would have thought it was oled. This comments are really making me consider getting it and trying it out. I just got RG503s too 🤣

I preordered the anbernic rg552 back before Xmas last year. Taki did a review and complained how the device was flexible, whilst trying to bend it in two. From his review it got me sweating. Like what have I bought?? Russ did a review thankfully and cleared up that misconception. When I finally got the rg552 in my hands I found it incredibly solid and weighty. Never in a million years would I ever use as much force as he did. Just so he could add another 30 seconds to his video. After that I take what he says with a pinch of salt and wait for Russ to clear up the real details.

Yes. It was a preorder bonus. August got a premium package, September bonus, and October just a screen protector.

Hang on a minute, how could they take any inspiration from the ayn odin, if these things have been done for a long time while the ayn odin was on their fourth month of delay due to the molds? If anything it was the other way around. AYN has been shipping devices basically from the production lines, retroid on the other hand has had the devices sitting for over a year...

Other than the start and select button placement (seriously what the hell?) and some other design flaws, this thing looks amazing! I don’t know why Taki was so antagonizing towards this and why he had so many issues. Maybe he had a faulty unit, I don’t know. But I ordered mine a while back and it’s on its way. Can’t wait to play it!

hmm, so no supposed improvement from the better android 11 drivers? And did you get a red flash on the screen when making large/rapid changes to the screen brightness? Saw a few people having that issue already. And I remember the rp2+ was capable of running quite alot of games at 2x for psp, definitely far more than the rg353p/rg503 does, still the same here or has performance actually got worse for rp3? Really like the overall design, just a pity they didnt focus on fixing the issues earlier and went to work on rp2+ instead, this would have made a far larger impact if they release early this year. With the same chip as the rp2+ and costing another 20 bucks and releasing half a year later, just lost some of the WOW factor for me. If only the upcoming anbernic rg505 can use a similar design/layout instead of those inline triggers/brick design 😪 Hoping the Powkiddy x28 has a decent build.

I was looking at getting a retroid handheld, but then I got an S22 Ultra and the newly released Gamesir X2 Pro. I love this set up! I'm usually near an outlet when I'm gaming, for charging purposes, but not able to play on my PC. My phone set up has been wonderful. That said, I'm still intrigued in a handheld for the novelty

Love the formfactor, but for me unless it can improve on some of the strange button placement a bit more power and a guaranteed decent screen, I can't see myself going for it. But the Orange colour is gorgeous and reminds me of my original Gameboy in yellow.

"I'm not getting the same QC problems that Taki Udon got.", seems to be the consensus from a lot of these RP3 reviews. If my steam deck wasn't coming this month, I might have considered purchasing this device. I have the RP2, and it didn't quite do it for me. Nice review.

Yeah qc control issues is one of those things that you have to deal with cheap retro devices. The beloved miyoo mini came to me with defects with buttons and the screen. I had it replaced and luckily I had no issues with the buttons but the screen is still not optimal. I saw a lot of other people complaining about the same thing.

I have to dock a point for them moving the analog stick down Anbernic style, but other than that a good device. I'll hold my RP2+ though, maybe if Retroid makes RP3+ with better processor inside then, I'll upgrade.

Now that I got one myself, I do want to add that PSP does in fact run pretty well and I'm using the RP3 mainly as a PSP emulator. Yes, you do have to tinker with the settings depending on the game you play and there might still be the occasional stutter. But PSP runs really well on this tiny machine. I'd just wish that it was actually a bit larger because of the placement of the analogue sticks and the buttons. I don't have large hands, but it's not super comfortable to use the left analogue stick and the trigger and/or shoulder buttons. I also frequently trigger the volume buttons when playing 2D fighting games. I just seem to push my palm towards the side of the RP3 when doing my Shoryukens and stuff like that. Just my opinion, but in that case I think a larger device would've been beneficial. Still a good device. Hope this helps anyone who's still on the fence of getting one. Oh, and I use Daijishō as a launcher which looks really awesome on that display.

Appreciate the videos, my dude. Dig the intro jam btw. I wish that micro HDMI was a USB C port. Micro HDMI is notoriously fragile. The home, start, and select buttons are placed odd too. Strange design choice. Really happy they targeted the PS Vita style D-pad though. That D-pad is legendary. I'm really interested in this device. I want to know if OpenMW runs on it well.

Very helpful video. I probably will get this device because of your in-depth review. I'm not familiar with the world of handheld emulators and there's a bunch to learn there. Thanks for your input. Now a "little" question : what handheld device could smoothly (and conveniently) emulate GameCube games? I understand that the price point would be higher but what would be the most affordable option? Have a great day 🙏

Interesting. A few days ago I was setting up DraStic on an LG V60 (Android 12) and the app was limited to browsing internal storage. Haven't yet had a chance to setup a frontend to test that workaround. Is there a different solution for enabling portable storage access within DraStic itself? I spent some time searching for answers, but didn't run across anything; best I saw was a mention that the dev was looking into it, but that was quite a while ago and as far as I can tell nothing came of it.

FTA: Did anyone else order this hoping Retroid might release an RP3+ board with a better CPU for less than $100? Or, did you purchase to get a better screen over the RP2+? Just curious what others were considering when they pre-ordered.
@clc64332 жыл бұрын
Same. If they put out a board that can handle PS2 well *and* offer analog trigger upgrades, it'd be the perfect handheld IMO. I really don't care about Windows OTG.
@ToeCutter02 жыл бұрын
I was desperately hoping RP3 could handle PS2, until I discovered it’s the same damn CPU as RP2+. I want a handheld that can play Shadow of the Colossus natively at more than 20 FPS. I’m curious if you’ve considered the AYN Odin? The Odin’s price is fine, but I was waiting for a retail offering considering some Odin buyers are *still waiting* for their initial orders placed way back in May? AYN seems to be dependent on crowdfunding which has become a serious pain in the past few years.

I'm going to wait for an RP3+. I already have an Anbernic Rg353p. And the RP3 is only marginally more powerful than that. The next handheld I get I'd like it to play N64 and higher systems significantly better that the RP2+/RP3/Anbernic Rg353p. I'd also prefer the analog stick to be on top for better 3D gaming.

It says that god of war needs buffered rendering but it actually doesn't. Some cut scenes might be messed up but just turn it back on for those scenes. Idk if it's fake but I've seen people playing god of war on the pocket 2+ with no frameskip that way. The no buffer rendering was for ghosts of Sparta. Might be different for chains of Olympus. Give it a shot. You might need it to start the game but once you're in the actual gameplay portion you should be able to cut it off

The biggest surprise is that you properly pronounced "udon" in Taki Udon's name! Anyway, it looks like a great device with only a few negatives. I'm looking forward to seeing more information about the similarly horizontal Hardkernel's ODROID-Go Ultra. But the RP3's screen seems hard to beat!

So basically, PS2 on the Retroid Pocket 3 is right where the PSP was on the 351P/M/V/MP devices, PS2 games will run, but it's not a playable experience. And PSP is right where Nintendo 64 was on those same devices. Playable, but not flawlessly playable. That's definitely a step forward for PS2 emulation at roughly $100USD price point. I look forward to what we get next year!
