Title is absolutely bang on. RP4P just does it all in such a great form factor. It's kind of the dark horse of handhelds to me. Everyone talks about all the other devices out there, but in the glory days of GBC, GBA, NDS the biggest reason I loved those so much was they were always with me in my pocket. RP4P is really the only one out there that can do GC/PS2 emulation while still being incredibly portable. We've got the Odin 2 Mini coming out that should be fairly similar in size, but at a $330 price point. RP4P still will be the best bang for your buck at $200.

@mymusicaljesus7 ай бұрын
@@adinwalls which is basically what it came down to. The 3D effect is something I genuinely enjoy (I know it can be devisive), but the clarity of the Retroid's screen and ability to play PS2, PSP, wii and GameCube just make this the better investment. Plus, as I just turned 40, sometimes the ease of having one device for all my old games in one place just seems so much more appealing than all the work of managing different devices for different games.
@alexlandsbergs7 ай бұрын
Ive had mine since launch, had the faulty triggers, their replacement time was pretty quick so their customer service has been really good so far. the one thing I will say is I got the skull&co stick caps and it really made the sticks feel even better. I agree with the grip being optional being a great compromise for both people that want a pocketable device and having an ergonomic device. the grips for the 4pro really do feel great. my main selling factor that a lot of reviewers seem not to understand is that the size and screen being smaller than other devices in the same price and power range, are just bulky and not as portable. not that I have a problem with those devices but this fits in my pocket. I Dont need a carrying case to bring it with me to work.

@@Patrick-bn5rp yeah the 16:9 screen really made me want the 4, but it would have stuck out of my pocket a little and been slightly less comfortable than the 2S so that was the main deciding factor. Picked this bad boy up on a whim. Had been eyeing a steam deck forever but couldnt justify it. Had the gamesir x2 pro phone controller and used steam link on a beefed up PC. Plus my phone has a SD 8 gen 1 soc which is better than the RP4P but it was cumbersome. Phone didnt have expandable memory, when i wanted to play i had to dig out my controller etc. Opted for this thing and its great with the grips. Unusable without. Swtich emulation is nuts for this thing. Only things i dont like are the joystick placement (grip makes it way more comfortable) and the screen leaves more to be desired but not terrible. The form factor + power is the absolute killer combo as well as the price. Id feel like such a nerd whipping out a behemoth handheld PC like the deck vs this little guy.

I used to have de RG 556 then some games where in the spot that they were not playable in that device like Baldors Gate Dark Alliance, Need for Speed Underground or F Zero GX (had constant cashing of the emulator with vulkan). Then I decided to change it for there Retroid 4 pro knowing that I was going to loose on the screen department, but actually being able now to play almost all the PS2 catalog in 3x is a whole different experience, is like injecting new life to that old games I use to play, so in fact in the visual department the experience was better at the end. But what was more shocking in comparison was the quality feeling of the device is just different, feels compact and well build, and the stronger part is the analog sticks are amazing, I had a lot of issues or not best experiences playing racing games or FPS on the RG 556, short travel, not precise, not fully responsive, sticks with a cheapy feeling. I mean I had both on my hands, had the chance to keep the RG 556 but seeing all this differences actually the decision was finally easy towards the Retroid 4 pro.

A few years ago I would have been all over the RP4+. Nowadays I look at handhelds in a different way and have a different set of priorities. Native aspect ratio and a fitting design give me the nostalgia that I seek. With that in mind, Sega retro games feel great on the RG Arc-D’s 4” screen and 6 button layout. Likewise, Nintendo games feel great on the RG405v DMG. If someone just wanted one device for £200, I wouldn’t choose an RP4+. The RP4’s 4.7” 750p screen is poor next to the 5.48” 1080p AMOLED screen on the RG556. A bigger battery and better ergonomics are also a plus. Performance is slightly better on the Retroid for PS2 games as is better portability. I’d say the 4 non + is the better value. At the end of the day, I just don’t think there’s a one size fits all solution. Great video though and an interesting take on the vast amount of handhelds today.
@adinwalls7 ай бұрын

@@adinwalls For GB/GBC I’d be looking for a vertical device (that’s not Powkiddy). The RG405V DMG is my current stop gap but I’m probably going to get an FPGBC + flash cart if Anbernic or Retroid don’t come up with a device that’s closer to the original experience.

With AwtherSX2 you can tweak the over/under clock, and then you can drop the resolution.

Hello. I am planning to purchase this device in the near future. Please tell me which 3D consoles work well on it. I buy it mainly because of the PS2 emulation, but I also plan to get acquainted with Nintendo games.

something no one talks about with the Arc or other Anbernic devices, idk if they cherry pick them for reviewers, but the light bleed, if you're unlucky, is very bad not a problem in most cases but in games with heavy blacks, it's noticable

Light bleed isn’t that high on my radar anymore although it does tend to indicate poor manufacturing sometimes

I know retroid 5 is essentially just the larger screen and I think it’s worth it to pay the extra $34 for that. Will the price for retroid pocket 5 likely be higher or lower than $219 by the time Black Friday rolls around? I really only want to play games from the GameCube generation and earlier. I need to do some more research and might settle for handhelds that can play up through ps1 & n64 that see have an hdmi port to play on tv.
@adinwalls3 ай бұрын
Hey man, you could save a buck and get a T618 device: Anbernic RG405M, RG405V. But you can even go lower spec than that for PS and N64. The Anbernic Arc is also a great option. Sorry this sounds like an Anbernic schill but I'm generally more of a Retroid fan personally, but Android just have so many options.

But it is better than Anbernic's RG556?

I think so yes
@BASSstarlet2 ай бұрын
@@adinwalls even though that 556 has better screen?
@adinwalls2 ай бұрын
@BASSstarlet for me, controls are more important than a good screen. Although I really like the RP4 screen. The 556 is great but we pretty much just use it for Roblox in my house. For an retro gaming we use other devices. My son uses the RP3+ and I use the RG Cube or the Ayn Odin 2 mini.

I've been researching these devices for a while now and I've been closing down more and more on the RP4P. I'm mostly interested on replacing my phone for PS1/PSP games, it plays them great, but I kinda want to have a dedicated handheld and not carry a Razer Kishi on my bag all the time. Plus, the prospect of playing the Wii version of Resident Evil 4 on a handheld that can fit on my pocket is highly enticing.
@adinwalls4 ай бұрын
I was just thinking about this: why this video continues to do well and the recent comments are alot about how people have research and they're settling on the RP4pro. I think right now it's the perfect balance of everything. Generally it's not a safe bet to try and do everything fairly well (jack of all trades) but the RP4PRO has done it.

What about input latency? I saw people complaining on reddit and saying its latency is close to odin2, which means it's not awlful, but not as good as it could be. (For reference, retroid pocket 3 plus is generally considered great regarding latency)
@mdr86157 ай бұрын
This thing has 3 things going against it: the screen is too small, it's not comfortable, and it's expensive. I'd only consider it if you absolutely need a pocketable thing that does GC and PS2. I'd like to see a 'non-pocket', bigger handheld from retroid, see how it stacks up again the rg 556 and the Odin.

I’m the one that said sonic generations for 3ds plays fine on rp4 pro. I played up to mushroom hill(3rd world) no problem. Citra canary-2797. Vulkan, spir-v shader generation, asynchronous shader comp, 3x resolution, linear filtering, disk shader cache. I play on performance setting just fine.
