OMG, I ended up buying the Retro Pocket 5 after watching Rus’s “Best Handheld 2024” video. I’m on the hunt for a guide but honestly, I only trust Rus’s recommendations. The Retro Pocket 5 is arriving on the 24th, and now I’ve got the perfect video lined up to enjoy on Christmas Day while tinkering with this amazing device. Life is good! Thanks Russ. i'm debating what to get currently...I like the Pocket 5, but I think I want a Steamdeck more....or wait for the new Legion Go OLED...or wait for the AMD strix devices to start showing up. I'll be getting another for my daughter after I load everything and figure it all out.

I used your written guide to set up my RP5 and I was very pleased with how it runs! One key thing to remember is that ESDE game folders are CASE SENSITIVE!!

I tore out a lot of my hair yesterday dealing with this, took me forever to realize what the issue was. Russ mentions running es-de once to create the folders on his guide, BUT if you've already moved some roms onto the SD card with folders that already have the correct names but are CAPS, then es-de won't make those folders and will fail during the handoff to some standalone emulators. Really important and hard to figure out through googling the error.

I found this out the hard way too. ESDE would spit errors with emulators for this very reason. I used ZArchiver to rename all the folders I made into lowercase to match the other folders and then reset the path selection for each emulator affected and it worked!

The RP5 I bought my fiance just arrived a few days ago, and (since she's a noob with android based handhelds) I still haven't decided whether to pre set it up for her, or give her an out of the box experience. @ChilkoNZ I am sorely tempted. The only problem is finding time away from her in order to do that (we both live and work together, and work ridiculously long hours, lol). One thing that helps is I've decided to gift her with my old 1tb sd from my odin 2 which is filled with roms, since I've recently upgraded my odin 2 to a higher sd card. Her birthday isn't until mid January, so I've still got time over the holidays and night time after she goes to bed.

ive been emulating on android for a very long time, but mostly just as apps on my phone. recently i got a used retroid pocket 3 to see if i would like owning a device like that along side my android phone ( i couldnt think of why i wouldnt just play on my phone) but since getting it ive been hooked and hungry for more power. so i got a retroid pocket 5 and i really wanted to set it up like a dedicated gaming device rather than an android device that plays games. i enjoy the process of tinkering, adding widescreen, and messing with settings on all my emulators and have enjoyed for a long time. I still managed to learn lots of stuff from this video and i really enjoyed the process! im not sure that i am 100% done setting it up after watching but i am sure ive been rocket launched into being able to actually play games on something that feels like its meant for games rather than stuck in perpetual tinkering hell. thank you! massively well made video and an enjoyable process with a great and usable outcome!

The RP5 is the hand held I wish I needed. It's such a leap forward over the RP4P. 8 months ago the 556 appealed to me more than the RP4P did, and once I played PS2 games for the first time on the 556 I was so blown away I picked up the Odin 2 Pro Rainbow variant and wow is it the most perfect Android retro hand held I've ever played. So yeah even though I'm all set and happy AF with what I have here I am nerding out to an RP5 setup video anyway. It looks so damn good.

Just wanted to mention also I’m sure you know this but on Mupen64, if you long press a game, you can select a different controller profile to be used per game so you wouldn’t need to bind z three times
