Mr. Pete, I always add a couple very small drops of 2 stroke oil to the fuel for my model internal combustion engines. Just adds an extra bit of lubrication.

Hook it up to a paint can shaker. Instead of the paint can clamp a clear jar half full of red liquid with a few marbles. I know Mr Pete can rig it up.

That appears to be a well made mini engine. Years ago I went to a lumberyard and they had a old single cylinder hit and miss engine that had flywheels that were 15 feet tall. A employee there told me it use to run on kerosene and they would wrap a rope around one of the flywheels and use a horse to pull on the rope to turn over the engine. That was appox 55 years ago the last time I saw it, so it probably has been scrapped by now.

The older I get the lighter I like my hobbies to be😂 I have always been a fan of hit or miss engines and this little model seems quite faithful to the design. Love it! If I had one I'd have to build small implements for it to power! Thanks for sharing!

Instead of the rosewood box you could install a generator on the base timbers. In that way you could charge your battery while the motor is running. The rosewood box could installed on a separate cart like those used for starting aiplane engines.

The RPM and the hit and miss sound do not seem synchronized. What is causing the sound? Thank you for the video.

That's how it works. It only has ignition when it's running under a certain RPM. The "hit" is the combustion, which raises RPM, followed by slowing down, no combustion in the chamber ("miss") . When it slows down enough, on the next cycle you get another "hit". Because ignition happens only at a certain point in the cycle, the interval between explosions might not be always the same. It might get to the hit speed just after the ignition point or just before and so on.

Might also be affected by component's precision, lubrication, temperature and so on... Quite often, the governors running this mechanism are not that smooth... I think this is quite visible in this example.

I remember when you could go to the store and buy reconditioned spark plugs and re-refined used oil. I also remember when you could buy engine rebuild kits for less than a $100.00. The kit had piston rings, rod and main bearings and a full gasket set.
