I think the Genesis one is best as the creator used a ROM decompiler to get the original code and adapted it to work on the Genesis.

Isn't there a mostly documented disassembly of the original game? And simply adapting some 6502 assembly to work on a sega genesis wouldn't work as the genesis uses a Motorola 68000, meaning the entire game would have to be re-written anyway.

Heh. That Megadrive version seems pretty much perfectly accurate, except for the music. It's a little jarring... has a much warmer sound than the original tune, but also loses some of the charm, imho. Especially with the overworld theme, but the underground theme I really like like this. My favourite of the bunch is actually the C64 version. For the sheer amount of "wtf!? the C64 can do this!?" In that regard, the Atari version is impressive too.

I think Super Boy 1 for the Master System was made by Nintendo their selves as a smear campaign. I mean, even for a 1989 bootleg... its pretty bad. Hopefully just some guy in his basement made it. As far as the others, I like the Genesis Music and the Atari one is still very impressive when compared to just about everything else on the system.

@GeovaneSanciniSR2 жыл бұрын
The thing is... Super Boy isn't really a Master System game, if you compare with the MSX version, they're kinda similar, and the MSX have an architecture similar to SG-1000, the Master System predecessor (not really predecessor because between SG-1000 and Master System/Mark III, there was the SG-1000 II, which is basically a redesign), and the Sega Mark III was backwards compatible with SG-1000 games. So, Super Boy was just a SG-1000 game running on a Master System cartridge, which explain the subpar graphics and jerking scrolling.

The MSX/SMS version was obviously the work of people who only knew the basics of the game, and not how it actually was meant to play.

I think it's kind of misleading to say that "Super Boy 1" is a SMS game when, actually, it had the architecture of SG-1000 (the direct predecessor of SMS) in mind, pretty related to the MSX I's. Anyway, a pretty curious South Korean adaptation. The Genesis adaptation is more interesting when considering more the sound chip of the console than the gameplay itself. But nice.

Nice compilation. Good god that Master System port is horrific. Sega made a version of Sonic for the Master System at the same time as the Genesis... and it looks really good, probably better than almost any NES game, let alone SMB1. This port looks almost as a bad as an Atari or Colecovision game from like 8-10 years earlier. You could probably just make a romhack of Sonic and have it be almost pixel perfect. Good on the creator just for getting something running, that's an accomplishment, but that's about it for the positives... like the humor tho "Sorry Nothing". The MSX port is clearly by the same guy & the same code base, so... The Genesis port is impressive and nearly pixel perfect, but given the hardware - it should be, although the most impressive thing is the behavior is also seemingly 1:1, but he used the orig source apparently, so that makes sense... but it is really let down by the sound. I would expect "upgraded" sound like that if you had upgraded graphics too, like when Capcom ported the original NES Megaman games to the Genesis. It's possible to get sound really close the NES on the Genesis, but they obviously didn't know how; should've gotten help from a sound person. Not shown in this video, but it actually does include the famous "Minus World"; although they didn't actually put the glitch in, they just replicated the behavior (i.e. the game sees you trying to do it, and brings you to a secret level), and it doesn't loop forever, it ends. The C64 and the Atari versions are the most technically impressive. Scrolling like that is extremely difficult to do on the C64, and if memory serves, it has no sprite HW, so everything is being done in SW, on the same CPU; so it's a miracle there's as little slowdown and it's as smooth as shown, despite being jumpy. The Atari version is a minor miracle given how limited the hardware is, and I liked how they added things like the thwamp & vertical moving platforms, which were relatively easy to do on the 2600 compared to things like having multiple enemies on the ground in front of Mario. Also fun fact: Nintendo legally went after the C64 and Atari ports with cease-and-desist letters and other threats to take them down, stop them from being distributed, and threatened to sue for damages... for... C64 & Atari sales of their games? lost Switch sales of the NES original (which now requires a monthly subscription)?
