Reformat the USB stick using PiImager (here's how: wagnerstechtalk.com/common/#Format_as_FAT32_Pi_Imager ). Create a retropie folder off the root (all lowercase). Insert it into the Pi again, give it about 30 seconds and remove it. If that doesn't work, try a different USB stick, maybe there is something wrong with yours.

Go into RetroPie setup under WiFi and make sure you see the IP Address. It may be in the format of 192.168.x.x . You can then use \\[your ip] to find the Pi. This assumes that you've already connected the Pi 4 to your network. That should get you to your Pi.

A few things it could be: 1) make sure your microHDMI cable is plugged into the port nearest the power input. Hi Jeremy, only two things I can think of that this could be: 1) Bad image download to the SD card or bad SD card or 2) A new update to RetroPie that is causing issues. Try re-imaging the SD card, if that doesn't work try again tomorrow or try with a different SD card (if you have another available). Could be the hosted image became corrupt on the download servers. All I can think of off-hand.

Just re-imaged Retropie and set it up manually (not using the CTRL+SHIFT+X), worked fine and connected to my local network. This means 1) possible bad SD card/image 2) possible bad Pi. Try again, but use the CTRL+SHIFT+X method shown in the video to setup your network. It's possible that you didn't set your WiFi country which may be causing the issue you're experiencing (though, I've never seen the error you posted, but I always set the WiFi country). Also, make sure you're installing the version of RetroPie appropriate for your model Pi (Pi 400/4 Model B, etc.), that could also be the culprit. That's all I've got for now, it did work fine here (clean install).

You could also install TwisterOS which comes bundled with RetroPie. However, in either case you would need to transfer over your existing files from the RetroPie image. You can definitely add RetroPie on top of PiOS, this is what was done with TwisterOS (which is running PiOS but with a lot of UI enhancements, apps, etc). There may also be a way to go in the reverse direction (RetroPie -> PiOS UI since both are PiOS), but it's not something I've tried nor needed to do. Definitely ask on the Subreddit above, I'd be curious to hear what others have done as well. I do know with PINN Lite you can have multiple partitions with different OSes installed: PiOS, another for RetroPie, another for Ubuntu or ... (many options). The main downside to PINN is that it first boots from a microSD before running the OS off the SSD.

Great video Sir! I just bought a Mortal Kombat 1 arcade machine. While the pandora box is ok I’d rather use a pie so my son and I can cheat together in arcade games to have fun. Any suggestions for me and using an arcade with retro pie? Very much appreciated. 😊
@WagnersTechTalk Жыл бұрын
Thank you for your kind comments! Are you asking about converting an original MK1 arcade machine to a RetroPie cabinet, building a new cabinet or purchasing one? There are a ton of different ways you can go. If it's an original arcade machine, I would leave it stock (jmho) unless it isn't working. With a bit of work, you can build your own and put the Pi into (fun project, my son an I built a few). Or you can purchase a case, connect an arcade stick to it, etc. You'll find some guides here that may be helpful: wagnerstechtalk.com/guides/#Raspberry_Pi_4_Retro_Gaming . They don't cover building an arcade cabinet though. There are just so many possibilities, I'm not sure what you're looking for.

so i finally got around to using my pi zero 2 w. installed retropie, no issues there. my issue im having it wasn't allocating the full sd card and i couldn't get it to do it, would just be unused partitions. its a 64gb one. ended up installing recallbox and that worked no issues. now im just trying to get the scrapper to work for box art. do you need to have the name EXACT like i have to remove (usa) rev 1.0. ect.. cause damn thats gonna take time and kill me hah
@WagnersTechTalk2 жыл бұрын
You shouldn't need to rename the games. Keep in mind though, if you have a lot of games to scrape it will only allow scraping a certain number per day (I think it's 5k) depending on the scraper. So, you find that it stops at some point, that's typically why. Creating an account will remove the limitation.

I always thought "BIOS" was the screen you'd get to from tapping F8 or F5 or something while trying to boot a broken computer??? Can you clear this up for me? And is there someone or some place that can put all these files in one place to buy or download? Games are called ROMS and BIOS is something that needs to be downloaded and installed with the games? I just want to play old video games but it got so frustrating that I haven't even used my new Pi in at least six months, which I essentially wasted $130 on!

BIOS is the code that tells a computer (PC, Mac, Gaming console, etc.) how to access hardware within the machine. So yes, you're right it is the first thing used by a computer before loading an operating system. Although, gaming consoles are also computers and each has it's own way of communicating with the hardware on the machine and therefore has it's own BIOS. I can't provide links to BIOS or the game files themselves, but there are indeed collections of either. Search for "archive [bios|rom] collection" or something like that and you should be able to find them. A little more info. on both types of files here: wagnerstechtalk.com/emulegal

Re-format the microSD card and start again (instructions here: wagnerstechtalk.com/common/#Format_as_FAT32_Pi_Imager ). If you're using a microSD smaller than 16GB, it may be running out of space. If neither are it, you have a bad microSD card. A few things to check/try.

Hi. New to all of this. So far, this is quite informative. One question: Are the game files actually stored on the microsd, or on the pi directly?
@WagnersTechTalk2 жыл бұрын
Hi John, sure no problem. The games and bios files are stored on the microSD. If you don't want to use a microSD, you can also use an SSD connected to the USB 3.0 (blue) port. Although, microSD is the least expensive way -typically.

@WagnersTechTalk2 жыл бұрын
Thank you, I appreciate your support! Due to the fact that both BIOS (system firmware or system files) and ROMs (the games themselves) are copyrighted material, I’m unable to provide direct links to any such files. If you’re unsure what I mean, you can read a bit more about my take on the subject here ( wagnerstechtalk.com/emulegal ). I can say, that both BIOS and some games can be found organized in archived packs. Using your favorite search engine, you may be able to find something by searching “bios archive” or “[game/system] pack archive” or something similar using some of these terms.

Hi, I have watched your videos several times and they are very brilliant. However, I can't seem to understand why my Pi4 does not bring over all of my games. I have to restart emulation station a few times to load all the games, it seems like it is capping on how much it can bring over and for the love of me it won't bring over snes roms... Do I need to create a rom file on the boot ssd as well? Or where does retropie store the games once you brought them over? Thx
@WagnersTechTalk2 жыл бұрын
Hi Squishy, thank you for your kind comments! I'm not sure which method you're using (USB or network copy). My guess is that you used the USB method and the folder names may be different between the Pi and the USB stick. After connecting your Pi to your network, open the file explorer and navigate to \ etropie oms (or \\[pi ip address] oms). You should see all the sub folders there for your games. Check to make sure the SNES games are in the correct subfolder of \snes. If they aren't, copy them there and restart emulation station for them to show up in the list. Hope that helps you out.

@@WagnersTechTalk Hi, yes I use USB. I will have to redo the setup for the network. The roms are in the correct file. There is a good chance the copy didn't complete from the USB drive. If the stick has an activity indicator, wait until it's done before removing it. However, that is one of the main reasons I prefer the network copy method. You'll know for sure when the file copy is complete.

I literally just got my Pi4 in the mail like 30 mins ago. Your video was uploaded just in time. lol. I've built an older model before, but this was a nice refresher. I never knew about the shortcut to preconfigure wifi. That's gonna save a bit of time later. Thank you, sir! (Quick question. Have you ever had the left half of your screen be a transparent green? Currently having that issue.)
@WagnersTechTalk2 жыл бұрын
lol, glad this was good timing! The WiFi setup shortcut was one of the main reasons I wanted to make this video. It's not very well known and greatly simplifies the setup process. Regarding your question, no I've not seen that personally. If I were to guess, try a different hdmi cable. I have received a bad cable in the past, spent a bit of time troubleshooting. Then narrowed it down to the cable. May be something you can try. If not, post your question here: www.reddit.com/r/RetroPie , lots of folks there that may have a better suggestion or ran into the same.

I bought a Raspberry Pi 4B to potentially play old video games but this seems so complicated!! I don't really have any idea how to do all this stuff. Plus, my HP laptop completely died while being forced to upgrade to Windows 11 and I have no way to solve that problem! Is there an easier way to play old NES and SNES games on my Pi? Where would I even find the "Bios" and games online??? It seems easier to buy one of these "Kinhank" or Super Console X systems with all that shit already on it, except that EVERY single video I've watched about them always has flaws or hundreds of games listed multiple times, etc. Not to mention that I own an 8gb Raspberry Pi already. I was disappointed that I can't even watch KZbin videos at 720p/60 fps! 480 at 30 fps is the best I can get it to play! Is there something I'm missing with this emulation business? Or is there an easier way to do all of this? Please explain it to me as if I'm a five year old, cuz this shit is confusing!
@WagnersTechTalk2 жыл бұрын
I see a couple of issues here, first your PC is not working and 2nd even if it was it appears you're frustrated. I don't want to add to your frustration. You can search amazon for "retropie" and buy a pre-configured microSD card. I typically recommend the DIY route, but it's another option given your PC isn't functioning. You can also find them on etsy.com, etc.

Just copy the neogeo.zip file into the same folder as your roms, that will fix it. Neogeo is the only emulator that I know of that requires the bios to be in the same folder as the roms. Give that a try and you should be good to go! Thank you for watching!
