I think pretty much every problem with Chaotix's rubber band physics getting in the way of normal gameplay could be completely solved by only having the rubber-band activate when pressing the hold button- ie. when you actually want to make use of it.

The funny thing is that I mostly had similar feelings and experiences with this game that you had. But when I introduced a fellow Sonic fan to this game, they actually wound up loving this game. With that in mind, I agree that people should try this game for themselves to see if they'll like it. I even think that this game would benefit from a remake with extra options such as choosing between the Combi-Ring playstyle and the Classic playstyle.

Seriously, why is there a 32X? They already have the Sega CD, and that didn't sell well. What were they thinking?
@mag10118 жыл бұрын
+TBrizzle01 Extending the life of the Genesis. The Genesis sold like hot cakes here, way better than it did in Japan, and Sega of America really, REALLY didn't want to move away from it until Sega of Japan came down and MADE them. It's also worth noting the 32X was made behind Sega of Japan's back, they were furious when they found out what Sega of America had been doing with a yet another Genesis add on rather than preparing for the imminent launch of the Saturn.

It's not hard to see Sega might have wanted a system that was cheaper than the Saturn but could still do 3D. Sega were kicking butt in 1993/1994 so they probably stormed ahead with the plan thinking it would sell because it's a Sega product. To be fair the hardware itself isn't all that bad, a bit weak maybe but it could pull off a decent version of Virtua Fighter and Virtua Racing. It outsold the Jaguar so it's not that much of a flop.

I think if they made a more puzzle based platformer with its mechanics it couldve been way better. They try to shoehorn Sonic style stages into it without seeing how the main mechanic refuses to constantly mix with it
@null10237 жыл бұрын
Really, that about sums it up. Personally, I love the visuals in Chaotix to death. It looks like it could be done on the Genesis because most of literally is done on the Genesis anyway (sprites are drawn on 32X). The thing I love is that it's got a very kind of wild, geometric look like what CD has, but done up even more because it's set in an amusement park. The backgrounds aren't going to look as smooth as the two SNES games you listed because they're drawn on the Genesis, with its paltry 512 directly addressable colors. There's all kind of little touches visually everywhere, and the one thing I liked the most was the turning to sand effect that you see everywhere. The music is standout. Door into Summer is such an iconic track. The controls kind of suck, although part of the reason I give a damn about the game is the rubber-band mechanic. I'm certain that the "call" button is a literal debug feature they ended up leaving in, the game is blatantly unfinished. Every character has a wall-climb entirely to limit scenarios in which the player outright couldn't get out of an area, whether it be due to the stage not being quite finished or a game bug or whatever. The bosses suck, but man they're pretty. Seriously, look at 13:06 on the boss's body, the cool-ass refraction effect. The final boss is hilariously lame, but it looks so cool! Being made up of sprites, they're also a bit of a showcase of the 32X's (mild) power. The stage design is ass and Techno Tower is almost literally copy-pasted several times each act (supposedly deliberate, you're passing through the tower several times while it's being built apparently), Amazing Arena is obnoxious, and I'm pretty sure the one they spent the most actual time on was Speed Slider, which is almost an actual decent stage. Almost. The game is pretty bad (if not actively offensive), but it's also pretty impressive. It is pure style over substance. and when judging the 32X, never forget that it's just a pair of CPUs, a chunk of RAM (much of which exists as a high-color framebuffer), and some DACs for more audio, all plugged into the 1988-era Genesis and that's it -- no scaling or polygon hardware (all drawn to the framebuffer in software), no sprite or background hardware (that's provided by the Genesis), no advanced sample playback hardware (sound is done on the Genesis, with extra samples being played back on the PWM DACs in software), none of that, everything is run by the two SH-2 CPUs its advantages come into play with games that do polygon drawing or heavy sprite scaling because it's basically supposed to be an external SVP, but even more powerful
@x-mighty76024 жыл бұрын
How to fix this game 1. Remove the hub world and make a zone order Isolated Island Botanic Base Marina Madness Speed Slider Amazing Arena Techno Tower Newtrogic High (not a full zone, just the two final bosses) 2. Make every zone have 3 acts instead of 5. In the first act, you must get 50 rings. In the second act: Isolated Island: complete the act in 1'00'' Botanic Base: destroy all badniks Marina Madness: get all rings, it doesn't matter if you take damage Speed Slider: complete the act without taking damage Amazing Arena: complete the act without touching Bomb Mechanic (unlock Bomb if you complete it with 100 rings) Techno Tower: complete the zone while being tied to Heavy Mechanic (same as combi ring, unlock Heavy if you complete the act with 100 rings) In the third act of the zones, you'd only need to burst to the boss. No tricks, no gimmicks. 3. Make the 2-player mode optional and remove the combi-ring (make the combi-ring optional, just when you're tied to Heavy) and make it split screen. 4. Make characters unlockable like Sonic Advance 2 or 3. Botanic Base: Charmy Marina Madness: Vector Speed Slider: Mighty Amazing Arena: Heavy (100 rings) Techno Tower: Bomb (100 rings) Beat the game: Sonic (Sonic 3+CD moveset) Beat the game with the chaos rings: Tails (Sonic 3 moveset) 5. Make elemental shields (only Espio, Mighty and Sonic can use them). Espio because he's a ninja, Mighty because he's prototype Sonic and Sonic because he can in Sonic 3. 6. Make returnable levels intended for Sonic or Tails' movesets.

Are you using an emulator to play Knuckles Chaotix because some of the glitches in your video I never encountered playing on an actually 32X! You got some facts wrong Tom Kalinske confirmed Knuckles Chaotix was originally in development for the Saturn and Sonic and Tails were going to be in it and it was going to be called Sonic Chaotix but seeing as the 32X needed games they move the project to the 32X and changes were made! Personally I really like knuckles Chaotix and while it's not perfect but it's a good game and it should be re-released, but obviously with some improvements!

Yes, I used KEGA Fusion, but I am fairly confident that the emulator is accurate enough to the point it wouldn't cause random game-altering glitches in one specific game.

You're not wrong that the main stages could've been done on the genesis. If you remove the connector cable that tethers the 32X to the Genesis, you'll see an image that's just what the Genesis is doing. Most of the time, 32X games use the Genesis simply for background composition (if you're familiar with the Sega Saturn hardware, the Genesis essentially acted like VDP2 in this case). Granted, the backgrounds are a bit better, since the entire Genesis hardware is dedicated to them but still, a few less backgrounds, colors and layers of parallax scrolling and you could pretty much fit a lot of games on the Genesis. Considering how poorly the add-on sold, not too many games were using the 32X hardware to its fullest extent. There just wasn't money in it so why bother?

Almost 27 years later, I'm STILL dumbfounded to WHY people continue to insist on calling this game 'Knuckles' Chaotix. The title screen beggs to differ, the Japanese box art says otherwise. Only reason it carries the Knuckles name is because Western regions needed a reason for people to associate it with sonic, pick up the box and purchase it!
@Tarquin232 жыл бұрын
…because the Box says Knuckles Chaotix and people tend to go by what the box says, as that’s how the game is marketed and sold.

Very enjoyable review for such a old and mostly forgotten game. I can clearly see why it wasn't re-released on any compilations, not even on the Sonic Gems Collection one, despite it having such a large on-disk art gallery section dedicated to it, which might have suggested it might have planned to be early on, but scrapped because it would have possibly been so incredibly dull to play through, and that's taking into account the likes of Sonic R also being included on that compilation. Either way, great showcasing regarding the game's flaws and more positive aspects. The game doesn't look bad per se, but the special stages aside, none of this seems extravagant or truly fun for me to play through. Looking forward to that Castlevania review!
@RetropolisZone9 жыл бұрын
+RickPellegrino I believe Knuckles' Chaotix wasn't included in Sonic Gems Collection due to trouble emulating the 32X hardware, though I am not sure if I buy that. I was hoping for Evening Star being played in the review but that's understandable since you were talking about overlooked tracks haha. I think that the rubber band mechanic is underdeveloped and that's only because I've spent extensive time playing Sonic Classic Heroes (WHICH REMINDS ME YOU SHOULD TOTALLY HAVE A SUB SERIES FOR HACKS/MODIFICATIONS, MAYBE? Not like they'd have to be as long since you'd be looking over only what was changed. Food for thought.) SCH allows for character swapping and that alone allivated tons of issues with having characters get stuck in unruly places. It didnt address everything though, but generally the chaotix ring feels a ton better in general in SCH than KC. But like you mentioned, the biggest pit fall of KC is level design, and SCH's levels are basically just S1 and S2 back to back which generally has really strong level design allowing the chaotix band to play out in a much more entertaining fashion. On top of that the character's abilities in SCH allow for greater and greater use and manipulation of the band. You barely touched on it, if even at all, but all the KC casts have unique abilities that allow them to traverse stages in their own unique ways. Heavy being slow and invincible, charmy being able to fly in any direction, Knuckles with his glide and climb, etc. But the abilities of the KC cast dont really jive well with the level design and you dont really get to make use of their abilities in a fashion that I think help make the game more enjoyable to play, as opposed to SCH where all the abilities of Team Sonic and Team Chaotix are some how reasonably compatible with S1's and S2's level design (which goes to show how malleable the older levels are and highlights a part of the reason why they're so good). KC is a mishmash and hodgepodge of tons of great ideas but just not properly executed. I did notice how you complained about the power down monitors, which stood out as a bit odd to me, as I thought it was pretty clear that the power down monitors are following the same vein of the Robotnik monitors from Sonic 3K, which were they to annoy and punish you for blindly breaking monitors. Though considering how KC has you careening throughout the level layout so fast without a reasonable window to react, I can see how encountering them would be a huge nuisance. All and all, great review as usual. This stuff really is great when I'm up late at night doing work!
@RetropolisZone8 жыл бұрын
I've never played Sonic Classic Heroes but I've heard a ton about it. Maybe I should try it sometime, if only to see how the rubber band works there. I think I did briefly mention or hint at that the characters have different abilities (don't quote me on this, I don't remember and can't be arsed to watch the whole video, lol), but if I didn't, it's simply because they're never put to any good use in the level design like you said. The level design is just atrocious in this game and the whole band gimmick seemed like much more of an annoyance than some kind of concept that makes the game more interesting. I suppose that is because I don't have enough experience with the game, but if, after three playthroughs, it still wasn't working decently comfortably, it seems like a failed mechanic in my eyes. As for the power-down item boxes... The Robotnik monitor only took away rings but you could move on straight after that and I think it was also better telegraphed to be a trap. It's Robotnik's face, ffs. An arrow that points down in Knuckles' Chaotix doesn't communicate its functionality as clearly, and if you do break it, you are stuck in the current set-piece for a couple dozen seconds because you can't progress. That's annoying the player; not testing them in any meaningful way.
@GHNeko8 жыл бұрын
Good point on the power down boxes actually! The lingering effect and the lack of "oh shit this is bad" was something that I clearly overlooked because I already knew it was bad; so hindsight failure on my part. I dont think anyone aside from TASers and Speedrunners would master this game within 3 play throughs so no worries there haha.

Interesting perspective you have here. To be honest when I played this I think I was blinded by the pretty colours, the nostalgia brought over from older games, and the novelty of getting to play one of the only 'Sonic' games at the time that I had yet to play. It never actually occurred to me how repetitive the levels were, but I have a short attention span so I tend to only play 2 or 3 stages at a time. I remember the last couple of special stages being incredibly frustrating though, at least you get many attempts at them considering the surplus of extra stages in this game. It also ever occurred to me that I wasn't being challenged much though, I was just enjoying the ride, but looking back.. This game was really easy now that you mention it. lol

Nice review. I honestly couldn't see myself playing this game as it looks like a huge mess, The rubber band mechanic was a really daft idea and is off putting. I wonder if the game could've been more successful if that mechanic wasn't implemented. E.g. going solo with one of the characters.

Also, I wanna say Mighty is why the game's never been rereleased- there's some rights dispute with the character. Same goes for SegaSonic the Hedgehog
@conlia3 жыл бұрын
I'm pretty sure it's actually because Chaotix is too obscure for a rerelease. SegaSonic wasn't rereleased because it's kinda difficult to replicate trackball movements on modern controllers. also sorry for replying to a 4 year old comment i just wanted to say this
@DragonArbock3 жыл бұрын
@@conlia Mighty was in a major legal grey area before Sonic Mania. I don't think the game is too 'obscure' considering they had collections that included Tails Sky Patrol, Tails Adventure, and Sonic The Fighters.

actually, sonic and Knuckles was the 5th installment. Sonic 1, Sonic 2, Sonic CD Sonic 3, THEN Sonic & Knuckles

Yea level design was so lame, but if you play it just to become the best at rubber band snapping and\or if you play it with a friend, it's totally worth it.

I would only play this if there was some sort of way to play JUST the special stages. Nice review though.
@RetropolisZone9 жыл бұрын
+Cubester64 There's apparently a code you can enter in the game that allows you to play the special stages individually, though you don't get Chaos Rings or a good ending for that matter... which I wouldn't be fussed about because it's completely awful and unrewarding, anyway.

this game cool I wonder if there are Andy ROM hacks to make the game better

There's a rom hack that replaces Mighty the Armadillo with Sonic.

I think they were rushed, or lazy, or put every single effort at graphics and music and didn't even care gameplay. The coop machanic could have been good with some more tweaks but it feels tedious and those level designs and bosses are just joke. How they could make something like sonic 3 and then this...
@DragonArbock7 жыл бұрын
This game is fun and the music is great. Don't see the problem with it being easy. Kirby's Epic Yarn was easy.

Hey bro sorry for the name calling, it's just that I was hoping you can try to focus more on the positive aspects of a game. Just trying to help you refine your technique man. I'ma go ahead and subscribe to the channel, because I do like hearing another's point of view. Have you done Kid Icarus on NES? It's a great game.
@RetropolisZone6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the apology. And normally I point out positive and negative things about a game, but Knuckles' Chaotix just happened to me be overwhelmingly the latter. And no, I haven't done Kid Icarus on NES, probably won't in the foreseeable future.

Awesome review ! Subscribed ! This game sucks, however I still like it because of the graphics and Knuckles being the main character.

why so little subscribers? this is geat.
@Gazoo1018 жыл бұрын
Because unfortunately, subscribers don't materialize out of thin air. Making great content is unfortunately only about 50% of the effort required to amass a following. The other 50% is getting your worthwhile content in front of people.

Omg, playing this game with two characters pulling each other all over the place seems like a complete mess
@TerraceLuster7 жыл бұрын
Gotta say, this review's missing some pretty important stuff. The multiplayer is arguably the best and most appealing part of the game, and it doesn't even get so much as a mention. That alone seems jarring to me. From what I can tell, the game was designed to be played with two people, since it's so much more intuitive and enjoyable that way. Also, in regards to the gameplay, the review doesn't seem to mention anything concerning the differences between the characters (air ability, weight class, etc.), and how that adds to the replayability and such.
@RetropolisZone7 жыл бұрын
It's been a while since I've made this but I'm fairly sure I actually did mention that you can play multiplayer, but nobody was interested to play this game with me. Secondly, I did mention some differences between the characters, but also noted that they ultimately didn't matter because most of them can go to the same places, anyway. It also doesn't help that the levels are extremely boring and repetitive in general.
