Wow, I'm pretty sure I wouldn't pay 300 bucks for doing at least advertising for them. But thanks that you did it, so that we could see this awesome arcade. 👍💛

Why not actually? Why should KZbinrs get everything for free, under the context of, as if they are 'advertising' (sorry, English isn't my native language, so I'm probably messing up sentence right there). They are not really advertising, they are creating content to benefit themselves first and foremost. So if a KZbinr is making money by making a video of their venue, why couldn't that venue ask for a piece of their pie in it? They have to make the investments to keep the venue alive. And who says they need the advertising? If you're a KZbinr that is just starting out, I can understand the resentment to have to pay a higher fee for just filming. But estableshed KZbinrs earn enough money to handle it like a bussiness and thus should understand when something is an investment. A KZbinr shouldn't be free from that. And the "I'm doing a KZbin video, I shouldn't pay" (or worse, "I'm a KZbinr, I want it for free or I'll give you bad publicity", which is basically blackmailing) has been abused so much by now, lot's of venues are beginning to wake up. I've even had outside locations I wasn't allowed to photograph, without permission or press-card. Which you had to make an appointment for and pay. Even if you wanted to take pictures there for a weddingshoot, you still had to pay for it. It's a bit of a toxic social media/KZbinr mindset, to think their content is automatically a great value to a venue, because they are filming/taking photographs somewhere. If it was up to me, 'influencers' wouldn't be allowed to receive any 'gifts' or income generated from their 'influencing'. To think that is even considered a 'job' these days. Mind you, for me there is a difference between 'influencers' and KZbinrs with actual content.

@@IanJacobyandcompany yes I realize people in the Midwest think they are entitled to go into an event space that makes their money by renting out their venue for shoots and demand to shoot for free. Btw you can take pics and vid there with your phone. You can’t have full on set ups or make money off the vids and pics you take. The creator of the video is making money off this video bc he filmed in a cool venue that charges to do so. That’s called a “production”

You took one for the team Ralph! Last time I was in LA, I dropped in at VAS. (Vintage arcade superstore) They were super cool and gave me the grand tour. Gene has about every part stashed because he has never thrown anything away. Arcade people around the world share an unique bond. These games were built to bring people together. They did so magically when we were kids. They still do, decades later. Great to see games in the wild like that. Personally, I despise LCD's but have softened up a little. Sometimes, it is the only way to keep a machine operational. That being said, I have fifteen vintage arcade machines. Zero LCDs.

There will come a time when LCD mods are a necessity to keep arcade games alive but we're not there yet. There's still enough CRTs in the wild for Arcades like Family Arcade to restore these machines the right way. I'd honestly prefer playing an emulated version of a game like the Simpsons on a CRT than playing the original PCB on an LCD.
@RetroRalph
@RetroRalph 2 жыл бұрын
I would too, and I agree that most of this is done out of laziness and cost savings. If they don't have the knowledge in-house they may have to pay a lot for monitor recaps and such. So, they take the easy route, it's a bummer, but it's happening more and more. I don't agree with it but with mostly enthusiasts fixing this stuff, these places end up taking the easy approach.

When I first saw the comment about the $300 price, I have to admit that I was a bit taken aback. But then I took a closer look at the arcade and realized the incredible quality and effort that went into creating it. It made me understand why they charge that amount. I believe their intention is to discourage people from just walking in, taking videos without playing or paying, and leaving. They want to ensure that the space is used by individuals or groups who genuinely appreciate and value what the arcade has to offer. When I thought about it further, I also realized that compared to renting a separate space for filming, $300 is actually a pretty good deal. You get a fully powered space where you can film and create content without any additional hassle. So, from my own personal perspective, I don't think it's as bad of a deal as it may seem at first.

Family Arcade was my joint when I had classes at LA City College across the street. Sometimes I'd stop by for a game of Marvel vs. Capcom 2 (man, that game was crack) before I took off for more courses at LA Trade-Tech. Next time you're in Los Angeles, please visit this underground arcade in Huntington Park, on Pacific & Saturn (one block north of Florence Avenue). Admission to get in is $3 before 6pm and $2 after 6pm, but all the games are free. Just look for the mural of Chun-Li parallel to the stairway and you're there 😊

My boxed NEC turbo Duo and about 30 games, and quite a few other things to pay for this damn transmission. Needless to say all that stuff today is worth way way more than six grand. I went to the arcade on the pier, but I couldn't film due to time constraints. I planned to go to 82LA but ran out of time. Thanks for watching!

So clean possibly because no one goes there lol. I remember paying $5 for all day game play 30 years ago at an arcade in Redondo Beach, Calif.. I just used a US inflation calculator and with the cumulative inflation rate of 117%, the cost for all day game play should be under $11. $25 is expensive, but probably necessary to stay open; the arcade I went to didn't last long. However, I was able to learn Dragons Lair on free play!

Great vid, huge fan of the T2 Pinball. If they have it somewhere I have to play it. Was the Rosebowl shot your own drone footage? Don't think you need a drone to film arcade cabs often :P

99% of the drone footage in Chasing Nostalgia is our own footage, but that shot was stock footage. Thanks so much for watching!

These arcades should welcome walkthroughs from larger channels. Its free advertising! I was shocked by how many people saw my walkthrough of a Houston arcade that LIVED IN HOUSTON and didn't even know it existed. For $300, I'd ask to spend the night haha.

With all the arcades in the LA area, I can't imagine why anyone would think that place was special enough to pay $300 to film in. Maybe if you're making a show for Netflix or a movie or something with a budget for licensing and location fees. For my KZbin channel? Nope.

So two things I didn’t think I would see today. Ralph moaning about having to take a piss after 2 spending 300 bucks to film inside an arcade. I watched it man, hope that offsets the cost marginally.

So I personally have never heard of any of these places.... I dabbled a little bit with the key Arcade Games on consoles but I wasn't obsessed with them like I am now. Arcade 1up, Yourself and Other KZbinrs have really brought Arcade Gaming to the forefront of my mind so I'll definitely give these places a Visit! I'll also Give Family Arcade a piece of my mind about that $300.... Hahaha! Na I'll just catch a super permanent and hard to remove Tag in their Restroom 😅 It'll Read 'El Ralpho Was Here' LMFAO! 😂😂😂😂😂

Man that's boo boo of them making you pay. Too bad Royce's arcade werehouse in Chatsworth isn't open anymore. It shutdown unfortunately because of COVID... You should've went to the Vintage Arcade Superstore in Glendale, Eighty Two in DTLA or the Barcade in Highland Park, which is the only one in the west coast. You also might want to check out The Two Bit Circus, the CEO and founder of it is no other than Brent Bushnell. He is the son of Nolan Bushnell, the man who created Pong and went on to established Atari and Chuck E Cheese.

Can't believe that place is charging (at all) to shoot footage. $300 is nuts! Did they at least give you a disclosure/permission form that both parties sign so that the footage is YOURS and they can never try to claim copyrights on the footage?

I agreed it was absolutely crazy and I haven’t ever encountered this before. If it didn’t take me damn near an hour of bumper to bumper traffic to get there, I would have left. I guess it was a case of being in the moment and a bit deflated after circling the place for an additional 30 min to find parking. They didn’t have me sign anything, it was super weird. Thanks for watching bud, I hope all is well.
