Rounding out our celebration for the release of Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth, we dive deep into the original that started it all. As Square Enix's vision for the remake trilogy is more bold than any of us could have anticipated, Final Fantasy VII functions more like an origin story for the sequels to arrive many years later.

As someone who has never played a FF game until last month, this game lives up to the hype. I knew nothing about it (except for THAT moment). I'm glad I played this before the remake or rebirth, and am currently working my way through Crisis Core Reunion, which is to say I'm hooked and will be quite busy over the rest of this year getting caught up.

Crisis Core reunion is SO GOOD! I can't believe I was so late to play it... the story and character stuff is absolutely crucial for any even slight fan of FF7, and the gameplay is amazing....to think it was a PSP game originally, and yet it plays so well even as such a faithful remake is kinda insane.

My kids (10 and 8) and I just finished a play through two weekends ago. I did the voices. They had no idea what was coming. The big death resulted in tears. But we soldiered on and they loved it. A few days later they asked if we could play through it again. I told them they recently remade some of the game. I fired up the Rebirth demo and they went bananas. 😂 The game may be dated, but it’s still captivating new fans.

I look back at my 10 year old self and just remember how lucky I was to play this. FF7 was probably the single most influential game for me, I played every FF up to 12 but they never hit the same for me. Great walk down memory lane here, the 90s were a great time to be a kid gamer and growing up with the console evolution.

Same here. This came out when I was 11. I got a Playstation for my birthday August 1997. Got two games twisted metal 2 and Soul blade. The following month (September) my mom said I could get another game. I chose final fantasy 7 because of all the hype. Had no idea what I was buying. When I put it in I was blown away by the intro cinematic and then disappointed because I had never played an rpg and was unfamiliar with turn based combat. I was like wtf is this? But then I gave it a chance and was total taken away by the story and the combat grew on me and I finish the game eventually. It took me like a year to finish. Got stuck at the materia keeper for months.

I'm pretty much the same. Back then (and now!) I actively avoided MMO's, hated them, and Squeenix lost me at FF12 when they went over to the MMO-style targeting. It was just too foreign. FFX-2 is about as close to "real-time" gaming as I want to get. I just don't have the reflexes for it. I tried FF7R and it has too much distraction, too much flash and sparkle on the screen, it actively obscures showing me what's really going on, action-wise.

I bet X was your first one right? I dated a girl who loved X and had never played any of the older ones. X remained her favorite. For me, X was the first one I didn't like. I think it's because of the voices. I don't really like the voices/expressions they write for the characters in general. There's something performative about it to me. Whereas a game like The Last of Us 1 & 2 are amazingly voice-acted and real-acted

I admit that the acting is a little goofy in a few places, but for 2001 they did an amazing job

7 was my first FF game back in 97. My big brother owned a copy and I would play occasionally but wasn't really into it at first. One day, he came to me and said "I know you've been playing this game..." I thought he was gonna beat my ass 😂 but he continued... "... I need your help with something..." .. if you knew my brother this was HUGE cuz he never asked for help with much of anything... Anyway, we head downstairs to his room and he just hands me the controller. I unpause the game and I'm on what I learned later was the final fight against Sephiroth 😮... So, I ended up beating the game for him 😂 ... This was my introduction into 7 and Final Fantasy/other RPGs as a whole and it's now my favorite game/series of all time. I just recently picked it back up to try to get a platinum trophy before Rebirth comes out... But I missed some key dialog moments and I gotta restart AGAIN cuz Barrett didn't wanna go on a date with me 😂.

FF7 had me because of the Midgar story. No other RPG had such scenery and an interesting urgency in the dark dejected slums. The cute little date with Aeris was the definition of charming and I loved when they sat together in the playground on top of the slide. Despair and grief suddenly after such a nice moment when the plate fell but! Wall Market was enticing and hilarious, and it pushed the social cultural levels of gaming far beyond what came before it. The capstone of gold on top of the journey was the ascent up the ShinRa office tower and the hair raising escape at the end. Nothing before that had ever come close to that glorious 1st disc. I found myself wanting a full game that took place in midgar, an open world adventure with regular people you play as - not the super hero main cast. I’d love to go see the play “Loveless,” ride the trains, and have sort of a GTA style game that took place there. I haven’t played the remake but apparently as in most games, the size and scope of Midgar is more true to life compared to the original game which was condensed and I think I’d love to travel down its streets, or even upwards to its luxury neighborhoods!

TBH imo remakes are too much anime for me. It just didn't capture the dark and lonely atmosphere of the original. Remakes would never make the original obsolete. SAme goes for lets say Resident Evil. The original had three discs and they didn't charge three discs separately for 60 euros. 4 disc if you were on PC.

I love love love all the comments from people sharing their experiences with first playing the original FFVII recently. I’m so grateful and happy that all of you have given the game a chance since it is dated, but I see how you all have realized just how endearing and lasting the story was that it’s easy to see past the game’s age as a result. FFVII was the first in the FF series that I played in its entirety, and it was the first video game that felt like a great novel. When I first played it as a teen, I was a big reader, and I have vivid memories of the story being so compelling, not unlike a great novel. I felt emotional connections to the characters and events, and it was so incredibly groundbreaking for its time, because until that point I (as well as most of us!) had no idea that a video game could invoke such feelings. For context, I have been gaming since the Atari 2600. FFVII forever changed what was possible in the gaming format and has been instrumental to modern developers who have been inspired by it. There’s a damn good reason for that. It really is one of the absolute best and most groundbreaking and influential games of all time. It’s been a trip and an honor to have seen gaming evolve to what it is today, I’ve gone from Atari 2600 to PS5 today, just began Rebirth. What a time to be a gamer!! Thank you Square Enix! ✌🏻❤️

I played this game when I was 19 years old and didn’t have hardly any nostalgia for it outside of the occasional story beat my dad told me about, and when I finally played it at 19 it was as if the games been with me my whole life, instant nostalgia for something I’d gone 20 years without ever playing and now I know most of the entire soundtrack by heart, look back fondly on the mini games, truly a game that turns you into a kid even now

Not many talk about it, but back in the days was FF7 and FF8 really hated by many gamers, parents and stores that sell videogames. Gamers hated it because they wanted action, kids and many adults was confused or bored by all the menus. Parents hated the game because their kids stopped to play the games after less that few hours (in some cases even some minutes) and their kids wanted a new game. Stores hated the games because many people who bought the games wanted their money back or an other game as exchange. I have talked back in the days to over 100 people who played both games, I have only met just 1 other person who had completed FF7 and that was a person who worked in a video game store and only 2 persons who had beaten FF8 ... the same worker from the video game store and the other was a person who worked in a comic shop. I was back in the days a big fan of both games and it was always a mystery to my why the Final Fantasy games was so hated.

Classic FF7 was the game that helped me find my love for gaming. Was the first game of its kind that I had ever played and I couldnt put it down. I remember borrowing my stepbrothers ps1 just to play it and would skip school when my father went to work just so I could get a few more hours in lol. Its characters and its lore has held up for years and will always hold a place in my heart as one of the best games to ever be made.

Final Fantasy 7 came out when I was 15 years old in High school, and it has been my favorite JRPG ever. The story is what makes this game above all other FF's in my opinion, and I've played them all. I still have my original memory cards and all specific save points, and 2 black label CIB's with misprints in my collection. I last replayed this on the Switch in '22 and I loved the speed up feature during battle. It cut the total time in almost half compared to my original time of 59 hours. Can't wait to play the new one.

I remember playing this game for the first time as a 7 year old and being absolutely blown away by the graphics and the realism. It was like nothing I’d ever seen before as the only other 3D game I had played was Crash Bandicoot. It still looks solid now on a CRT. Damn, the late 90s and early 00s were such a fun time to be a gamer. PS1/N64/PS2 eras were simply incredible. I just feel like the games of today aren’t made with the passion they once were.

It's the nature of RPGs. Some people explore every nook and cranny and are rewarded with new characters, items, equipment, abilities. Some people rush for the story. And then most people are somewhere in between. Explore what they can, but don't end up finding a lot of the more hidden things. Until you hear someone at school or work or the Internet gushing about it and then you try and see if you can do it yourself lol

I played Final Fantasy VII entirely on a somewhat broken ISO loaded onto my modified PSP back during the Great Recession. Plenty of roadtrips to visit elderly relatives, and plenty of gametime. Ran into a few notorious crashes with the ISO, especially at Temple of the Ancients, where you don't get a save file for about 2 hours. There was one crash which would corrupt the save, but I never experienced that one. I may go through FF7 again. So much that I did not experience and do not remember.

I still remember buying this from a blockbuster when I was 13 for like 20 bucks without any idea what it was about. I just knew it was 3 discs, so figured it would take me awhile to get through while I saved up for some other games that were coming out. I was blown away by how fun and engaging it was. I spent the entire summer playing it (multiple times). I also read somewhere that the original creators didn't have the time or people to fully flesh out the story the way they wanted to. I think the new games to a good job of filling everything in. I do miss hunting for the summon materia though, I always found that fun.

My two favorite gameing experiences of all time was playing Pokemon Gold as a Kid, and playing FF7 as my first experience of traditional JRPGs. Experiencing this game as a kid, completely unspoiled of the story and what awaited me. I could almost describe it as life changing. Love what you said about the remake installments' "stop and smell the roses" approach; I think it speaks to the developers understanding that much of its original fanbase just wanted to exist in that world as much as possible, far beyond what the original provided. In my case, much as I love the remake, I can also understand how it will never live up to my expectations, and what I imagined was/could be happening in the FF7 world while I was traversing it superficially. I'm still glad I get to spend more time in the world of FF7 while knowing that my vision of it was mine alone.
