I do not support Retrosix. It’s not that he gets pissy when you point out things that need correcting. It’s not that he acts like a tool. It’s not that the shells use paint. It’s not even that he uses his own branding. What gets me is that he sells the shells as prestige but the paint can be uneven. The text is crooked and he lied in the voltage of his clean juice mod. Edit: Handheld legends on the other hand are fantastic.

Loving the custom TRF shell. 😄 My GBA has an essential IPS upgrade and am tempted by the USB charging option, especially as I how have USBs on my mains socket faceplates - much better than mains adapters/wall warts. I agree about the audio "upgrades". The issue with Gameboys are the low frequency hum which is more noticeable at low volumes. If the audio is being drowned out by ambient noises, plug in some headphones rather than annoy anyone else (plus you'll get stereo sound!). Are there any options to fight the minor irritant hum without side effects (small ferrites, electronic components, moving the speaker or by other witchcraft)?
@Omega_24 жыл бұрын
the precut from retromodding, saves the unsavvy modder, a good bit of time when doing the ips mod. If you don't want to struggle destroying the shell precisely, then precut is good. For my first ips mod, I grabbed that glow in the dark shell and had that precut. For the TRU GBA, I decided to take a battery powered engraver tool, and struggled for a long time to get it to where it should be to put in the ips kit. Never again.

@Kalvinjj4 жыл бұрын
As far as I know (anyone that knows better, please do correct me if I'm wrong) the Prosound mods on the Game Boy lineup is to actually improve the quality instead of increasing volume, it's way less noticeable on the GBA classic for example, that has about the best (meaning "least terrible") sound quality between all the Game Boys I'm played with, followed by the SP, but for example the Color sounds atrocious. I do not mean speaker, I never even care if it works or not (other than when selling them of course, I do sell some modded ones that I take the time to mod with care), but the headphones out on the GBC sounds horrendous no matter what, worse even with an AC adapter. The GBC amp has a ton of background hum and noise, with freaking batteries inside not on the wall. The power circuit on it just sucks in therms of filtering even with new caps. The Pro sound mods (is it spelled all joined or separate?) take the sound straight from the processor's analog output, before even going to the sad little amp.

Fyi if you use that 3d printed center bracket without that particular precut shell nothing will fit right and cause the glass screen to bulge out and pop away from the shell, if your someone that prefers to cut and trim your own shells because you prefer doing it yourself or just like saving money your better off just using the centering brackets that come with the ips kit This is just from personal experience from buying that center bracket, if that center bracket was maybe 1mm or 2 mm thinner it would be user friendly for self modders and drop'n'play modders

I decided not to get one of these shells for my GBA build purely for the fact is says retrosix instead of nintendo, and the horrible branding on the back. I'd rather a lesser quality shell so long as it has the original markings. Their other products however are really nice I will say. Also the screen brightness fading in is normal, does that on mine also when you have the brightness setting up high

I worry about soft touch as well. I know some older electronics with soft touch material become sticky after 10 years or so. Not sure if this is a new soft touch material. I just did my first GBA mod and im in love with it all over again , I can't thank you enough for all the helpful videos. It took me 6 hour to trim the clear slime green shell up and get the ips v2 screen in and the clean juice and glass . I have a few more small things I'm going to do to it next but it is a million times better playing games on it now than before. I've never played kingdom hearts before and I've been playing chain of memories a lot now. I just picked up a few cheap games to have something to play for now, I got that and Madden 2005 and madden looks great on this thing! It has real music on it too and the faux 3d works perfectly. I cant wait to get more games that I grew up with and finally get the games I never got to play. I already want to mod another one for multi-player games lol. I think I'll do either clear orange or clear purple. I love the clear colors. It just feels more authentic to the era to me, I had a clear orange n64 and my friend had the clear Green.

Hey Elliot! When putting it all together like that by yourself, is there any need to solder/braze anything?? Looks like for me as an amateur, all I'd need is just a screwdriver and then simply putting it together?? If that's the case, what screwdriver size do you need? When adding an amplifier, then you'll probably need to solder something to the motherboard. Thank you!!
@NoodlesTheSpoopyOne4 жыл бұрын
I pesonally haven't done this but from what I can tell the only soldering is if you want to be able to change the brightness lower or higher as for the screwdriver ive used a 0.6 tri-wing

Hi Elliott. I'm glad that you finally have RetroSix here. For me it was a fun mod but soldering a clean amp and IPS V2 was not easy for the first time. This 3D printed LCD screen bracket is a new design. Mine was in 2 parts and a bit too tight causing problems with the screen (light-bleeding on the right side and bottom).

Hey Elliot, I have a GBA with a backlit upgraded screen, with a rechargeable battery and in a aluminum shell, I did not build it but bought already done, all of the sudden it will not turn on, it blinks with a white screen, then goes black...sometimes even half black half white screen and stays like that. Any thoughts on the problem? Thanks, Kyle
@ToxoRetro4 жыл бұрын
Obviously I'm not Elliot and nor can I guarantee a solution. Before finding out how to fix it, a little bit of detective work to discover more of it's symptoms. The first thing I would do is try turning up the volume then switching the GBA on. Does the sound behave as if it's booting up? If yes, it's likely to be either the screen or ribbon cable side of things, hopefully just come loose or something minor like that. If no, the issues may be more complex such as circuit shorting or other components. If a company customised it for you, you may have a warranty. Otherwise invest in a tri-wing screwdriver - try a cheap one to begin with from companies like Zedlabz (UK) or Retro Modding (Canada/USA). It's probably best to get a £/$3-4 Nintendo driver set as it's a small amount to spend if you don't intend to do more (you can always upgrade to a decent set in the future). There are many KZbin videos which can help if you're unsure, such as This Does Not Compute, Makho and of course The Retro Future. Hope this helps get you started. Good luck
