I miss these days before the phones, social media and even the internet. Everyone was so plugged into the real world and interacting with each other. That's what made the 80's great.

Yeah, back then I only remember talking to girls on the phone. I would never call my friends. I would just go over to their house or walk the neighborhood looking for friends to hang out with.

I agree but the same can be said about the 50s 60s and 70s it's when the radio was most important, and the only social media we had was getting a group of kids together and having a pizza and enjoying conversation

@@douglashall2141 I grew up in the 70's and 80's. I remember my dad complaining about the music and the long haired bands. He would always say that the music of the 40's and 50's was the best and the music in the 60's 70's and 80's was trash. That is what I say about my kids music today and nothing will beat the music of the 70's and 80's. I guess every generation thinks their era's music was the best.

83 grad. We were in such a hurry to grow up. What did that get us? What a great song about a time when your biggest problem was getting up the courage to ask a girl out. Now as an old guy I look back and long for things that can never be. Compared to today, the 80s were so good. Miss them.

@@rah2287you think that a president suddenly makes the time? That’s interesting and very simplistic thinking. The actual dynamics of society and culture are more gradual and have other influences. But nice try. Ever notice how economic catastrophe seems to follow republican presidents? Regan led us to the S&L crisis. George W led us to the 2008 crisis. Trump led us to a failed Covid response’and recession. All of them spiraled debt more than democratic presidents. That’s more telling.

This theme song, and Fast Times at Ridgemont High, represent Gen X, class of 1984. Not sure how fast 40 years went by so fast. A more simple decade compared to present day. Life moves very fast and if you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it. Thank you Jackson Browne, Sean Penn, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Judge Reinhold, Phoebe Cates, etc.

It had it's moments...but, no. The '80s were in many ways the antithesis of this movie, whose spirit belonged to the freewheeling 70s. Shortly after the release of this movie, in fact during the release of this movie as I remember, the dubious reality of the 1980s kicked in; Ronald and Nancy, Reaganomics, sanctimonious PSAs, neo Cons (that bother us still), obnoxious, self-serving Yuppies, GenXers listening to aging rockers, over the top punk-influenced pop, houses that were 3/4s garage, and worst of all, AIDs! The last of these itself, put quite a damper on being young in the 1980s. Also, if any incident should happen in schools and college dormitories, were some irresponsible idiot does something that endangers the well being of themselves, or others, there was nothing that new regulations couldn't solve. Don't like the quiet hours and restricted access? look to the 80's and you will find the source of your discontent.

Every generation has a favorite decade. As a Gen Xer, the 80s was my favorite. We Xers were coming of age around this time and I was about to graduate high school, still deciding which college to apply to. It was an exciting time, full of challenges and unknown. This song and movie capture the era spot on.

50-ish fellow here. Thanks to all of you for writing comments. They are heartwarming to read. Some trivia some may not know about this movie: The actual school it is based on is Clairmont (sp?) High School in San Diego. A young reporter disguised himself as a student at the school for some time, then wrote the book Fast Times at Ridgemont High... After high school, the fellow Spicoli was based on tried to join the Navy but was turned down due to his marijuana use. He became a different sailor and was on the Exxon Valdes when all that oil was spilled...The character who was based on the fellow who dated Jennifer Jason Leigh's character threatened a lawsuit at one point but acquiesced when given a guitar...I thought I'd remember more than I just wrote. Take care and be well, all.

Although this was 1982, it was culturally the tail end of the 1970s. The late 1980s was much different; Reaganomics, rise of ghetto culture, HIV, crack, it was a grimmer era. These were the last of the good days, the last of old America. Where we went to the arcade to meet friends, buy weed, play Gorf, and try to get laid. Then field parties where both white people and black people listened to the Stones, Zeppelin, Marvin Gaye, and Earth, Wind, and Fire. Weekends at the beach or summer trips to a beach. Less politicized cultural divisions among teenagers. Young kids played in the neighborhood unparented until dusk. It was golden.

I will always love this movie and everything about it. The clothing styles, the music soundtrack, even the way people talked was different. It will always remind me of the 80's. I think this was the first movie I saw on a VHS player. Back then they had not been out too long and were very expensive. I always thought this tune by Jackson Browne was cool, his voice is just clean and crisp. The 80's for me was the best decade ever, glad I lived it.

Grew up in the 80's. Absolutely loved it. But I think most people tend to look at the era of their youth through rose colored glasses. Don't forget AIDS, crack, and the fact we were in a very tense nuclear arms race with the Soviets. We made it through OK though, so the bad things don't haunt us as much as the good times bring a smile to our face (thankfully). ;o)

Fast Times at Ridgemont High was one of the funniest movies about teenage life that I've ever seen. I'm so glad that I grew up and in one piece the way that myself and my brothers and peers drove back then .

Same here, class of 81. Got to live 80's in late teens in to mid 20's. The last decade ever with little or no technology, it's why we remember it so fondly. We were young and wild and free !!

Nice to be nostalgic, but those of us in our late 50’s and 60’s, it’s still not too late to call your long time friends and go on some adventures.
