@@reversalmushroom These are the fixes I can think of: 1) The SNES version resets you to 5 lives every time you switch off the game, whereas the GBA version saves your lives. 2) The GBA version raises your cap on lives from 99 to a much higher number (either 255 or 999; I can't remember which). This combined with the first point means you'll rarely if ever need to grind for lives in the GBA version. 3) Minigame huts can be re-entered continuously in the GBA version once unlocked. This makes stocking up on items easier until you reach the secret room in World 5-4, and it gives you time to practise each minigame without replaying levels or losing lives. 4) After you beat World 6-8 in the GBA version, you'll unlock 6 new levels exclusive to that version. One of those is my favourite level in the whole game. This isn't exactly a fix, granted, but it's a welcome addition.

I both like and dislike the GBA version for having the Yoshi voice instead of ambiguous sound effects. I have to say, though, that as far as the graphics and music are concerned, it's a pretty faithful port, most SNES to GBA ports (like Donkey Kong Country) end up sacrificing the overall quality due to hardware limitations.

Man, I grew up with the GBA verison so the SNES version is so weird to me... SNES version's color palette is a tad easier on the eyes tho without the bright colors (tho I'm sure the bright colors was bc the GBA had a bit of a dark screen) I've played and love both tho!! Despite it being super unpopular the DS game was also fun but I def understand what people mean by it "loosing the charm" with the painterly artstyle dialed back.

Great video! About original Yoshi's Island - in my opinion (so far), it was the best game in the trilogy! I've played the SNES version, but I've decided to stay with the GBA one. Yoshi's Island DS was also pretty good! The best things about it are the new babies, enemies, graphics, and the museum (even though it looks a little like an island zoo)! However, the bonus level in tower almost completely ruined all the fun for me. Yoshi's New Island - I've heard about how many people complain about the story - well, I'm a little disappointed too... But nonetheless, I'm still plannin' to get it on my 3DS emulator in uncertain future! Got any ideas for the good one?

Wise words there. The SNES version already had pretty impressive graphics, music and sound effects for the hardware, despite being released late into the system. (August 1995) I could understand the GBA port being worse due to the limitations but the DS had every single expectation of being the true portable version of the SNES with a dual screen, and even more powerful than that.

I grew up with the DS version and additionally played the SNES, GBA and 3DS versions, and out of all of these, I must say that the SNES version is the best! Contrary to its subsequent two installments, it has a very diverse soundtrack with no oft-recurring leitmotifs, just like how I prefer it the most. 😊

I love Yoshi's Island DS. The graphics are an improvement from the first game (especially Yoshi's sprite) and they at least tried something different to mix up the formula with the babies enough that I can call it a true sequel to the first game. Music is also great but not as good as the first game and getting 100% is a major pain.

@@Turbulation1 Hey I'll take that soundtrack over Yoshi's New Island or any modern Yoshi game for that matter any day. At least Yoshi's Island DS' soundtrack is pleasant to listen to. Yoshi's New Island's soundtrack sounds genuinely bad to me and games like Yoshi's Wooly World and Crafted World while having some nice tunes, it has a Good Feel (the company) problem where it doesn't sound Yoshi, it sounds more like Good Feel.

A lot of the music with that soundfont sounds pretty terrible and there are only a few good sounding ones. I just highly prefer a soundfont that can make music sound energetic and upbeat.

I'm glad _Yoshi's Island DS_ and _Yoshi's New Island_ were included in this. Honestly, those games are less sequels and more along the lines of rehashes, kind of like _Akumajou Dracula_ on the Super Famicom, Sharp X68000, and PlayStation. This is an evolution in reverse. No wonder no other Yoshi game since (even the decent ones) have failed to live up to the original - they can't even get the original done right! Still waiting for the day, though, when Nintendo tops the masterpiece that is the OG Yoshi's Island. [EDIT: Except for GBA Yoshi's Island, which, like a lot of GBA remakes, is an almost 1-to-1 remake with extra tweaks on slightly inferior hardware. Still prefer the old Yoshi noises to the baby noises, though.]

But anyway, the problem with Yoshi games since is that they've been dumbed down, and Nintendo has replaced the expressive, spunky cartoony, and off-the-wall vibe that helped make original Yoshi's Island so memorable and replaced it with bland cutesiness and a reliance on gimmick aesthetic (wool, arts & crafts) to try to stand out. This fundamental misunderstanding spills into their later attempts to "update" Yoshi's Island seen in this video.

One mistake here: The GBA hardware is actually SUPERIOR to the SNES hardware (the SNES is weaker). Yeah, I know that the graphics and the sound make us think that the GBA has weaker hardware, even if it's completely wrong (The SNES needed an external chip to run Yoshi's Island properly while the GBA could do it by itself). And the GBA has a 32-bit architecture while the SNES has a 16-bit architecture

@@GekkoCircleHead That is...absolutely correct. The colours can look washed out on some games and the sound is universally terrible, but "Inferior" was the wrong word to use. The GBA was legit capable of rendering 3D graphics while like you said, the SNES could barely manage the subtle embellishments of Yoshi's Island without the game's Super FX chip (still amazing for a console released between 1990 and 1991). I don't even know why I was being so harsh on the GBA port of the game here. Must've been in a bad mood or something.

The voice from Smash came from Yoshi's Story, which is somewhat a "sequel" to Yoshi's Island. They ended up completely replacing Yoshi's voice for every game after that. (Except Super Mario Advance 2 and Mario Maker, which used SMW's sounds)

The DS and 3DS games lose 100% of the charm the SNES original had. The SNES game is the only non cutsey Yoshi game. One of the main reasons why the SNES game is still the best Yoshi game. The whole IP went downhill after the SNES game.

My only real complain about DS and New Island is their soundtrack. I mean, the DS soundtrack is, like, very sad? It lacks emotion? I just don't know. And New Island soundtrack is boring. When I play these games it's hard for me to feel excited as I did in the first one because of the music. Honestly they're good games on their own and have nice new mechanics (New Island could have harder difficulty and it would be better), but their soundtracks are very forgetful.

I didn’t know that SMW2 of SNES or GBA (GameBoyAdvance) and Yoshi’s Island DS is actually canon. The DS actually has an intro of what’s happening the past and then it happened again.
