Admittedly, they are now becoming a thing of the past, which is a pity, as they are so well-made they just don't fail. (In those days, the 'phone company rented out their 'phones, so they made sure that they were bomb-proof.) The people I am judging are the ones who cannot efficiently open a conversation on any kind of 'phone - dial or otherwise. I know one person who says nothing, when they answer, in case it might be a 'scammer' of some kind. Idiots. Do they really think something is going to jump out of the 'phone at them? Then there are the ones who say, 'Hi', leaving the caller wondering if they have actually got through to the right number. And how about the fools who won't talk on the 'phone at all? They want you to 'text' them, instead. When I answer, I say, 'Hello, and state my name. Simple. Can you see a problem with that?

I read most of the comments posted by others before watching. First, THANK YOU FOR SHARING THIS BBC GEM! 😁 Second, complaining about this last century gem is akin to complaining about Shakesspear and good grammer. If anything, it harkens to a void in understanding the beauty of the creative works of previous times, in literarure and audio/visual. A lack of appreciating the grounding of what we build on today in the arts. Lastly, we have lost something today in the fast paced-in your face- blood, gore, and sex. Understated is beautiful!!

I enjoyed the tension in the episode and like a few other commenters I didn't quite get the ending. I understand he was having flashbacks to his time in the war, but the plane shown in the final scene looks like it had been there a long time, not something that had just crash landed. Ergo my confusion about what happened, I thought the flashbacks were helping him find his way down, and my reason is you would think if the captain is crashing the plane the rest of the flight crew wouldn't seem so calm. I think its fair for those of us that were a bit confused, that paired with the audio not being great I did the best I could to try to understand what had happened.

Barkworth plays a guy to two years too young to fly in the war. Thought that can't be right, in 1972 he would have to be 43 or less (born 1929) and he looks 60.Nope he really was only 43 in 1972.

At 17m into the video his mate explains. They were both just too young to fight in WW2. They joined the RAF as the war had just been declared over. Give or take a few months.

+james marshall The main character, whom I think but am not sure was played by either Ronald Leigh Hunt or William Franklyn, is now a middle aged man, I think a business man, in c.1980. He had been a bomber pilot/Captain in WW2, I think the plane was a Lancaster. He becomes reacquainted with his former aircrew and groundcrew and the chief mechanic is somehow able to locate their old Lancaster which is in storage in a hangar somewhere. He renovates it and makes it airworthy again. The the Captain reunites all his old surviving crewmembers and persuades them all to fly with him over Germany one night, recreating their last ever mission from WW2. I'm very vague on the plot as it is nearly 40 years since I saw it, but I seem to recall the ending with Leigh-Hunt/Franklyn being killed in a car accident at the very end, after they'd succesfully completed their final mission. Does anyone remember this programme and have the slightest idea what the hell I'm talking about!? If so please get in touch here! Thanks, Paul Murphy.

The captain wasn't a WW2 pilot he was too young but rather he was in the ATC at school. He was brought up on tales of the war and had joined the RAF too late to prove himself but was surrounded by old hero airmen in his second chosen profession as a commercial pilot and was always playing second fiddle. After the death of his wife a life of bottling up feelings was taking its toll. He always felt his wifes wartime love, who was killed, was her real love, his career was faltering to younger men and a bad relation with his daughter who didn't return home for the funeral of her mother struck home the theme of coming second to others and he was cracking up. Reality and fantasy blended together just at the time his flight got into difficulty and his delusion was informing his performance. Just in time for him to bring his damaged plane home from over Germany and live out a wartime hero fantasy. And everybody onboard died.

In times past drama used to be more character based because there simply wasn't the budget for big action scenes. Many modern drama series / films - deliberately cram more and more action in to keep viewers satisfied. This can be demonstrated by the Fast and Furious franchise. The last effort was simply ridiculous. What you've watched is superior acting and building tension.

why is it that I can never enjoy watching one of these obscure old tv shows without a horde of idiots trying to belittle modern telly that they don't watch? there was plenty of god-awful stuff on tv in the 60s-70s, the only difference between The Sweeney and Spooks is that one has "charm"- because it's from the 1970s, and so it's attempts at being "real" and "gritty" come across as quaint and serious rather than adolescent and sadistic. Better Call Saul or the Sopranos would never be made in the 1970s as (most of)the audience audience wouldn't have the attention span to follow the same story for more than 50 minutes.
