Can you believe that its been 9 years already since Sierra 3 returned to service and that just 9 years later Sierra 28 returned to service as well I'd be happy to see another one return in the next decade or 2 form now on railtown

I'll never forget the first time I saw this engine... My mother was a devout "Little House on the Prairie" follower growing up and that engine was the main thing I'd watch for. That whistle has such a nice sound... They do need to tune it better, it doesn't quite sound healthy. So nice to see this still running. I hope to see it in person some time. Need to take the trip to James Town... What fun that would be!

Well done on the footage not only of #3 (a 4-6-0 Rogers that had a lot of sisters in the Illinois Central 380-class of the 1890's), but also of the #2 Lima Class C Shay that filled in when the 3-spot failed a check valve.

How long did this restoration take?
@brendangranger36845 жыл бұрын
The locomotive went down In 1996. It needed a major rebuild to keep running. The project never really got on with until 2007 due to lack of funding. They started a campaign in 2007 for funds to rebuilt the engine. Ultrasound technology was used to inspect the boiler, and turned out a new one was needed to be built. All that took until 2010, when it returned for the first time in 14 years. That’s what you see here.

I kinda knew about it getting a new boiler from a tv show called ultimate restorations where they should the process of sierra's 3 overhaul so it only took 3 years to rebuild her in the 21st century I'm impressed it only took that look to restore a 19th century locomotive. also Will number 3 continue to run until 2025 when it's maybe time for another rebuild to keep this old girl running or was I just overthinking it? I not sure if I'm right but am I maybe?

@shogunballa14 Yes, it seems like they have not take the time to tune the whistle. Just after I shot the opening video the engine when down for repairs. They had worked very hard to get the engin ready for the July 3 opening. To find out the condition of the 28 I would suggest you check out the railtown 1897 web site.

can someone tell me why an engine blows off a lot of steam from its pistons when it gets going,
@stephenharrisn87244 жыл бұрын
Because after the first stroke the steam needs to exit for the next stroke so the old steam is dumped out so when the next stroke comes new steam can be pumped in

Sierra #3 has been in plenty more than that. I've counted over 70 motion pictures, not including T.V. shows.

What kind of diesel is that, an ALCO?
@adamjenkins33337 жыл бұрын
it's a Steam Locomotive
@dougliebrock7617 жыл бұрын
The diesel shown at 3:15 is an early '50s Baldwin RS4TC-1. Hope this helps.

There is a 44 minute video of siera #3 and the problems at nwprrhs.org Jamestown is one of the parks scheduled by California to close. I hope it does not happen.

Amazing. I love the format at the beginning. I notice she is blowing off, even with a pair of heavyweights. Also, why does No 3 have extra flags?

Cylinder cocks are open at the bottom of the cylinders to let any water out. If the water was not let out the cylinder heads would be broken.
@trainknut11 жыл бұрын
Ok so we both know she's been in a lot of motion pictures and tv shows your point is?
