The Worcester to Mossel Bay route is a branch line stooped in character and history dating back to its construction in the late 1800s. The Cape Central Railway was founded in 1883 with the line reaching Ashton in October 1887 the primary purpose being fresh farm produce from the Breede River Valley to Cape Town.
The CCR received stiff competition from ox wagons and soon the company was bankrupt with its assets being transferred to the New Cape Central Railway in 1893.
1906 finally saw the line being extended to Voorbaai and crossing the Gouritz river by means of the sharing the road bridge that was already in use. There was, however, strict weight limitation that continued until the line was absorbed into the South African Railways which lead to a multitude of improvements along the route. These improvements included the construction of the new bridge in 1931 and the laying 80lb rail.
Today this branch line is occasionally visited by two NBL built South African Class 19D steam locomotives. Consecutively numbered 3321 and 3322 were the first two of fifty 19Ds built by the North British Locomotive Company of Glasgow, Scotland for the then South African Railways and Harbours.
These locomotives are now privately owned and operated by Ceres Rail Company that use them for scheduled day excursions, private charters and occasional overnight trips. This five-part series showcases these sister locomotives along the same route during two different CRC Voorbaai excursions.

Yes, they are both oil burners. Maximum speed now is 60 kph. Gauge is 3' 6".

@barryphillips7327 4 жыл бұрын
@@WayneSA85 the drive wheels are about 4'6'' my guess, i would have thought they would do a little better than 60kph, prefer coal burners but nowadays beggars can not be choosers, New Zealand is 3'6'' gauge, we do not see steamers much these days, damn greenies, ha ha.

@@barryphillips7327 The reason why I asked is that from a book that I have, it says that our railway uses the Irish gauge. The book is the train book. Mind you, I've found a couple of inaccuracies in it. So the book talking about our gauge is inaccurate I guess.

Probably water. A lot of mainline steam locomotives here in America have an auxiliary water tenders due to no network of places to fill the tender.

Do you by any chance remember Ken Campbell? The Cape Town outfit is basic instinct, still active in Natal and Gauteng etc. If you in the Cape and interesting in joining something along these lines then join Friends of Atlantic Rail soon to be Cape Western as the clubs are merging soon. We provide the crews for both Ceres Rail and Atlantic Rail as well as other club outings etc.

Guess what. The few steam train's left running is not gonna end the planet and you can't avoid global warming because it's a natural process. I'm guessing you drive around in a gas powered car though so you are doing plenty of damage yourself.

I have to agree. Half dozen preserved locomotives pottering around a county this size once every two weeks during special excursions will make absolutely no difference. If we still had 5000 of them knocking about, now that would be a different story. Thanks for watching.
