I used to be a yardie a few years back and we would often forklift cars out of tautliners and other trucks. I was always the one to do it because I was a car guy and actually gave a shit about the car. Always had a stack of blocks sitting behind my seat that I’d put between the forks and whatever the most substantial point to lift under the car. An extra ten minutes taken meant we never caused any damage and the boss never had to pay out for damages. Everyone’s happy.

you're a smart guy and a decent fabricator Benny, surely you could make a couple of 50x50mm rails from box steel . that would provide a lower lifting point for the forklifts to bash on.... make them a bolt on rail and attach before it goes to the shipyard.

Sounds like you might've been better off buying and giving away a trailer in the States, that's a huge U-Haul bill! I imagine you could install travel protection but freight handlers and stevedores may find ways to damage things even if you cover the whole car with steel plates and rubber baby buggy bumpers.

Yeah, there's no "may" about it. They will damage it. I've worked in the transport industry at an international terminal and seen it happen in real time.

Pumping out the fuel isn't that unusual but normally it would be more common to see if it was airfreight not a container deal. However they could still be doing it to avoid any chance someone wants to push a dangerous goods deal with any customs clearance etc. We ship aircraft engines for work (air freight not container jobs) and we purely purge the engines for DG reasons).
@Landonstein
@Landonstein 6 ай бұрын
This is correct, for a vehicle to be considered not a dangerous good, it needs to have an empty fuel tank under the International maritime code, or be shipped on a specific vessel. International carriers have been cracking down on hiden dangerous goods over the last few years. I work in regs and the price skyrockets anytime an MO41 needs to be filled out.
@jaisonbairstow3753
@jaisonbairstow3753 5 ай бұрын
@BennysCustomWorks this is it mate, IMDG code considers a full tank to be a DG parcel which costs a lot more to deal with than 30L of fuel. AMSA doesn't even like us taking 20L jerry cans out to lighthouses in WA

Great to see the Cresta back home Benny. love the channel keep up the good work. I would have thought that the container yard people would have taken a little bit more care moving the Cresta but themes the brakes some people just don't care. Looking forward to catching up with you on the next Drag Challenge.

(Yes, vapour is what ignites, Benny, and an almost-empty tank can make a bigger boom than a full one, but especially with anything like a modern evap/vapour recovery system, the risks are about equal, unless the car is being shot at or something. A more-full-tank might slosh and leak, more often, cause of the hoses and all, or make a bigger pudle if a fuel line goes. I presume the Cresta has a drag racing cell in it? I expect those are as safe as they could make em. Gasoline in a well-ventilated pan will put out a match. But puddles in an enclosed space make vapours too. )
