I've used an e3-1230v3, a 4 core 8 thread Haswell Xeon in a Optiplex 3020. Similar story-- performance comparable to the i7-4770 for a significant discount. No integrated GPU but not really relevant for making an inexpensive gaming PC. A good alternative to the Optiplex, if one is able to get it for a reasonable price, is Dell's LGA2011 Precision workstations (T3600, T3610, T5810 are the ones I have experimented with). The 4 core 8 threaD e5-1620, 1620 v2 and 1620v3 can be found for $20-$25 consistently on eBay and perform similarly to the Sandy Bridge, Ivy Bridge and Haswell 4 core 8 thread i7s. There are also inexpensive 6, 8, 10, and 12 core upgrades. For example, I just upgraded a T3600 with an 8 core e5-2689 for under $45 and upgraded T5810 with a 12 core e5-2678v3 for $80. These machines also come with 635W and 685W PSUs.

I have been trying to get my hands on a precision workstation to do a video and review one but these prices are ridiculous now a days. Use to get optiplexes for like $20-30 but now the going rate is like 80-100. I primarily like to buy them to make a profit but with prices, by the time I buy it and upgrade it, the profit margin is little to none. Makes for good content so I might have to bite the bullet on that. Def appreciate the info on the precisions! Thanks for watching!

@@DLMtechgarage I was lucky to get a few Precisions for a good price from a local company replacing them with newer models-- selling the Quadro GPUs in them actually covered most of my purchase price. @@Bulldawgfan My understanding is the Dell's e3 v2 family (here is a list-- some of them are 4 core 4 threads, others are 4 core 8 threads: ark.intel.com/content/www/us/en/ark/products/series/78580/intel-xeon-processor-e3-v2-family.html) are compatible with the Ivy Bridge desktop boards like those in the Optiplex 3010/7010 and Dell's e3 v3 family (listed here: ark.intel.com/content/www/us/en/ark/products/series/78580/intel-xeon-processor-e3-v2-family.html) are compatible with the Haswell desktop boards like those in the Optiplex 3020/9020. These lists are not exhaustive, only those that were available in retail channels, I believe-- for example there is a Xeon 1231 v3 which isn't listed here, but are sold on eBay. These are most likely SKUs that Intel sold to OEMs like Dell or HP and are now sold on secondary markets as the machines they went into are retired.

The A17 version of the bios might give you better performance since it is without the spectre and meltdown mitigations which strongly nerf hyperthreading. My understanding is that you're only vulnerable to S&M if your system is networked with other computers or someone has physical access to your system. I got 2 Optiplex 390's, same case, Mine has the i3 2100, it works pretty well for its age, but the weird thing with it and its preventing me from selling it is that if it looses power for too long, it will not boot or power on from the switch, As if the cmos battery died or something, I installed a new cr2032 battery, doesn't matter. The only why I can get it to turn on by the power switch after it was unplugged is if I press the little button the back of the original PSU. it powers on but will not boot, power light stays amber, hold the power button until it turns off, and then unplug the PSU from the wall and wait until the led on the motherboard starts to fade, then plug it right back in, works every time. No idea why it does this, I have identical 390 with a i7 3770 and it never has this problem, even swapping out ram, and PSU's, CPU's, that board will do that every single time, the 3770 system works perfectly even after power loss, it just that i3 system. Shame I got no use for it, it performs well enough to sell, but I wont sell it for that reason.

Yea like Williams said the mobo don't support it, also also I have found that using ECC decreases your computer's performance by about 2 percent and is better suited for server data and processing to ensure data is not lost or corrupted in an event of failure or crash, unless you need that feature non ecc is the way to go as the memory nowadays is way more stable. No. The 390 has an LGA-1155 socket and the E5-2665 fits in an LGA-2011 socket. It would not physically fit. i3/i5/i7 2nd and 3rd gen CPUs use LGA-1155 and are equivalent to the E3-12xx / E3-12xx V2 lines of XEONs. I do not know if the 390 would support an E3 xeon, but it would NOT support an E5 xeon. The i7 Extreme enthusiast line use the LGA-2011 socket and are equivalent to the E5-16xx chips. The E5-26xx chips can be used in place of an E5-16xx, but are meant for dual cpu systems.
