A year late, but that just comes down to the fact that most builders use standardized equipment that requires little to no modding and is modular. Any person could build a system now and it wouldn't be terribly expensive; there's also upgrade options without having to worry about proprietary sizes, mounts, etc.

Well done. Not the cleanest work, but at least it is more relatable this way. Everyone with access to a basic workshop for an afternoon or two can manage a good looking mod like this. $450 for an SFF build with 4C8T and a 3060 is wild! Most of us won't get bargains like you did, but the important part is to show you don't need all shiny new stuff to have fun.

So I inherited a few cases of top tier 650w PSUs, and watching folks like you upgrade old optiplexes got me thinking of trying it out. The 7020 does not require cutting to get a normal ATX PSU in it, YAY! A 6 to 24 pin adapter is all that's needed. I managed to remove the drive cage to fit longer gpus in there with just a drill and some pliers, and now I have a MSI full sized 1070 in there and a 120mm intake fan and I highly recommend upgrading the built-in speaker as well; this Boston Acoustics speaker blasts and Dell has a built in speaker boost app that makes it LOUD, perfect for a kid's room or dorm/studio where you have zero room for a speaker setup. Thanks for the cheaper Xeon upgrade suggestions, much better value and still enough to push 1080p gaming in most cases. Keep up the great work in your garage man!

I've done some mods in the past and when doing smaller cuts use a drill bit for the corner and cut from there . Use both hands on the Dremel, tape your cut lines they will be cleaner . If you have cutting discs that are smaller due to use keep them for curved cuts as it's easier to turn with a smaller disc than a larger one. Final tip and the most important use is a metric ruler and tape . The machine was built using a metric scale the fans are in mm it will give you more accurate measurements . Example the width of the two fans plus the gap in the middle it's easier to know 240mm plus the width of the gap over 3 3/4 + 2/16 + 3 3/4 =7 10/16 maybe ...

Well done! I like the idea for the side panel intakes! You can fit fans in the front of the case, if you get the Noctua NF-A9x14 PWM fans. They're really thin and should allow you to install them in front of the GPU. I've been able to fit a 3060Ti in my Optiplex with these fans in the front as well. I'd also get some feet for the bottom to raise the chassis up a little and cut a hole in the bottom for the PSU to breathe its own air. Currently, it's sucking in hot air from the GPU. You can also thread a screw through to tool-less PCI-E bracket. I put screws through mine to secure things into place more.

You might want to reseat the gpu or take the bracket out completely and secure it a different way, because the lock in the PCI slot is supposed to prevent that kind of loose connection, which makes me think the bracket in the case is actually causing that if it's happening consistently.

I did something like this with a slim profile DELL cheese grater - the empty cases are real cheap to buy. I put my own components in it and everything was great for a few years- and then the thermal paste totally dried up which caused the PC to shut down repeatedly a few minutes after logging onto the desktop. I had to go in and re-goop it. That's when the pain-in-the ass session started - all of the original install: - struggling to fit in the tight fitting MoBo - had to remove it and re-install it. - the tedious attaching all the I/O cabling - the tedious and time consuming forming into shape (cable flow mgmt) and doing all the zip lock tie downs for all the cabling ... all up in smoke - Had to it it all over again.!!! All of that extra work - just to get at four screws on the back of the MoBo to be able to pop-off the CPU Fan block - for the re-goop. Why? because all of these cases only have just one side panel to pop off. Never again!!! - I don't care how cool and sexy the old or new PC case looks like. If it doesn't have a second back side panel to pop-off - not interested. Great build /Mod you did there BTW!

When you do go to a 7700, it might be a bear to cool. They didn't solder these chips and the TIM between the IHS and the die wasn't that great, so you might have to consider delidding it to keep temps under control. Also, you could consider a better cooler. I'm not sure that Cooler Master will be up to the task. So, I'd suggest something like the Thermalright Silver Soul 110. You might need to measure, but it's 110mm tall, it may or may not fit... but it might be the best cooler you can stuff in one of these. Down side... no RGB. If you must have RGB, the ID-Cooling IS-55 ARGB should fit, but might need a little more cutting, but it's only 55mm tall. That's what I'm going to be putting on an i7 7700 in a Z240 project I'm doing right now.

Thanks for the input!! Love your channel by the way and long time viewer!!, I don't care for RGB, it's a running joke I make that viewers started..., but in my area, computers flip so much faster regardless of specs if they have RGB.... Love those computers and def want to get one in the SFF to mod in that small case and do a full upgrade!!

I'm doing a optiplex 3050 project right now. Mine originally came with i3 7100. I was able to get a decent price on a i7 7700 pairing it with the Rtx 3050. All that's left is the paint. I'm planning on doing same theme leaving the black, but white in place of the blue. Cooler I picked up is the Jonsbo CR1400 fits perfectly, and looks good. Hopefully it keeps the 7700 under control. I did do plexi window on side panel. I haven't yet, but I'm thinking I'll be able to mount a front fan. Question, the i7 6700 was compatible, no issues? I looked up the motherboard it only showed 7th gen compatibility. I know normally it would have handled 6th and 7th, but didn't want to risk not supporting the 6700 considering Dell might have locked out 6th gen.

Nice job. Also, with an older cpu like that, when a game is using over 80% cpu you'll lose a lot of performance with that nvidia card. Amd does a lot better with older cpu's because they do hardware scheduling on the card instead of making the cpu do it like nvidia does. It's because of a trick nvidia used in the early 2010's to get better performance but they really need to stop doing that in the 2020's. Hardware unboxed did some "nvidia driver overhead" videos that prove this. So if you're just gaming, an rx 6600 or 6700 would have been a much better choice. Nvidia ampere cards (the rtx 3060) really needs zen 3 or the intel 10 series of cpu's or higher. Hear me now and believe me later.

Amazing work and attention to the detail. There is so much potential in old hardware but people are lazy snobs, cursed to always want new and better.

You remind me of me like 20 years ago! Only it was dell 8330's I think some was or something like that. Back in pentium 4 days lol. But modding old computers/ part bashing to make the best of what you could find.

Really neat to see people take 'junk' and make it into a useful rig again. We're in a world that likes getting the latest n' greatest even when it's not needed as an upgrade. So much so that used stuff often doesn't get considered.

and why it's soo cheap and thrown out!!

I did something similar with a Lenovo SFF office PC I got for $50. I went with an i5 6500, 16GB of RAM and an RX 6400 low profile. Its pretty solid for what it is.

My first gaming rig was an Optiplex that I cobbled together. I cut the case up with some tin snips because the gpu was too big to fit in. I think it was an 8800gs or something like that..

Wow dude i like this so much. I can relate to this 100%.turned an Dell Precision T7100 into a gaming beast. Had to change Psu and get a 24 pin to 8 pin converter just like you did, i am running with an rtx 2060 for nearly 3 years now. I can still do some mods for better cooling but the highest temps i got on the gpu was like 80 Celsius and cpu was like 60 to 70 Celsius on hot days so i am Chilled.

I just did a whole case swap. I found that the normal SFF Optiplex limits it for quiet a few things. Honestly just spending like 50 bucks for a new motherboard and power supply will be the best thing to do if you actually wanna expand the use of an Optiplex for things like gaming.
@DLMtechgarage Жыл бұрын
it does, I did a video on it case swapping it and it ran so much better.

Number of years ago, I took a CRT TV to the dump and in the process, I found myself surrounded by a dozen orphaned desk-tops destined to Asia for reclamation... . In 2 separate trips, I smuggled them out. Everyone was in working order with nothing wrong than a corrupted OS... When I was in school, I took auto-shop to learn basics in mechanics and engineering. I was thinking that these old computers would be better sent to the local high school to be easily be restored for poorer kids in the area. The desk-top is the perfect place to start to understand the mechanics of computers and, from my point of view, this was a lost opportunity...

Like the Budget Build; That power supply is sweet; In the future put a piece of scrap cardboard in the case when using the cutting wheel, just to prevent burn marks you may regret. Looks Sweet MOPAR!

Pretty sick! I've wanted to do something like this for a while now, with blue and some wood panel wrap on the from panel (and maybe elsewhere not sure). One of these days....

I've got the vent from a small air conditioning unit on the side of my sff optiplex 7010, the inside cutting is horrible but from the outside with some cool vinyl wrap and the vent it looks cool lol

the panels hid my horrible cuts lol....

Damn, i was expecting you to put double 120s on that side panel for big airflow... Still a really good mod.

Just a suggestion on the cutting. You should cut wider than your line than grind/sand back to the line. Will give you perfect results that way. Other than that, I enjoy the videos!
