Bird Dogs Afield visits Braeval Kennel to learn more about the return of the red setter to the field. We interview Gregor McCluskey and watch his red setters work in the field.

Red setters are the most fabulous dogs to hunt with, it is so exciting when they freeze, claw forward, freeze, crawl and wait until you are ready...

We have an Irish Setter (father) and Golden Retriever (mother). A really interesting mix.

Great that he's breeding them for what they were meant for. I really like the looks with less feathering. Similar amount of feathering to my Ryman English Setter. Hard to beat any setter :)

It's great to hear that Red dogs are making a comeback, but I don't think he is accurate about the Irish Red & White Setter. There is Irish Red Setter and Irish Red & White Setters, the Irish Red & White predate the Red Setter and are a base dog of the Red Setter. They are different breeds of Setter, not just different colors. The Irish Red & White Setters are still alive and well mostly in the UK and are considered a rare breed with probably less than 300 registered worldwide annually. Feel free to search KZbin and you will find videos of the Irish Red & White Setter.

you're correct from what I've read. AKC recognizes the irish red and white setter and irish setter as two different breeds. And I've read the red and whites predate the reds. I remember irish setters being so popular when I was a child. But I was surprised the first time I saw a true field irish setter. I've read speculation that show breeders used Afgan hounds mixed to get the flowy coats and long ears and I don't doubt that at all. Irish setters are such great dogs. It's great to see them making a comeback. I've always thought that setters in general made better all around hunt and family dogs than labs yet labs are so much more popular.

I picked up a red setter pup from Paul Ober and Celtic Kennels just a few weeks ago. She's a delight in the house, and showed her first real point yesterday at a mere 14 weeks old.

Great to hear of the work being done to resurrect the hunting strains of Irish Red Setters! My dad had 2 of them before I was born. My mother and the changes in farming practices since the 1970s (joining the EEC) put an end to my dad owning setters. Throughout my life so far, we've had English Springer Spaniels. For the last couple of years I have been trying to establish a red leg partridge population in the gun clubs I'm a member of. I have also done shooting with a club member who has English Setters. The English Setters are fabulous dogs but I would love to own an Red Setter if the partridges will cooperate and settle on the land I have for them.

Fine fieldwork. I have had irish setter, but a kind of show one. But I think the lighter fur is better, because of their work In the field. Field line should be appreciated more. I read a book of wartime (wwII) and how the solders/ hunters and their dogs brought food to the tables both In front and In homes when visiting there.

I love that the dogs are bred to function in the field and not to look fancy in the show ring! The show ring rarely do anything good to any dog breed... I wonder, about the "English" Pointers. I often see, mostly American but also UK, bloodlines with noses that are upturned and a bit "mashed together", more resembling a pug than a hound. Waaay back, the Pointers used to have noses/faces more resembling hounds. Is this something that is intentionally done in these bloodlines? Is there really any thought behind it? Benefit? Only looks or a pure accidental happening that's now being carried on? This kind of puzzles me because here in Scandinavia the Pointers don't have that type of nose, yet. They don't seem to typically have that look in Greece or Spain either. (Of course, there are exceptions!) Perhaps I should add that I know that in the UK there are a lot of show Pointers. We don't have those here either, only hunters own Pointers here and we do go to shows, but the dogs are not bred for the purpose of shows only. If that makes a difference?

Ugh…. John Nash was responsible for being the Irish setter back into competitive field trial form. He was an Irish dog trainer. & he did it in the UK many years ago. I witnessed working Irish setters in Scotland in 2006
