Keeping fire on the ground helps maintain plant and animal diversity. Prescribed fire is one of the most effective tools for controlling invasive species, allowing native species to thrive.

Fire and big herbivores are the key. Bison used to be more widespread, they were almost everywhere. Also 10 000 years ago there still were horses of different species roaming about. After their extinction, where man had probably a hand in, in many regions far from the prairies native graslands often only survived because of controlled burning practiced by native Americans. Though big grazing herbivores also play a valuable role in restoring graslands, we should include them more in conservation schemes.

Elk Fire is about to eclipse 80,000 acres with only 16% contained; this video does not instill confidence for controlled burns in regions without comparable culture and infrastructure.

Hey, that's a very real concern--all the more reason to expand our training resources when it comes to controlled burns. As a resident of the midwest, I can tell you that the ecosystem here is a lot different compared to Wyoming. Controlled burns don't carry the same amount of risk.

Nearly 73,000 acres of the Bighorn National Forest are now on fire. “The previous largest fire recorded in the forest’s 100-year history topped out at around 18,000 acres and took weeks to grow that size. Over the weekend, the Elk Fire grew more than 25,000 acres IN A MATTER OF HOURS.”
